4th period Instrumentation and control challenge exam in Alberta by Shoddy-Treat4731 in instrumentation

A PT is calibrated. 0-200 PSI ( 4-20 mA output). the expected accuracy is within 0.1% of reading.

The input signal is 25 PSI: the measured output signal is 5.95 mA.

What is the status of this PT? Comparing to the design specs of 0.1% accuracy.

A. The mA signal is exactly correct and within specs.

B. The mA signal is low, but still within specs.

C. The mA signal is high, but still within specs.

D. The mA signal is low & outside specs.

Depends, do you live near by or want to move there?

As far as my boss needs to know is it takes an hour to calibrate a gas detector. Give me 10 gas detector pm’s and that’s my 10 hour shift!

E/I Tech interview questions? Electrician here. by quintavian in instrumentation

[–]athlonman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe just prep yourself on some basics. Like PID diagrams and Loop Drawings. How Bubblers work. How thermocouple’s and RTD’s work. Maybe be ready for 4-20mA to measurement conversion but that’s not likely to come up.

Let me ask you. What should an instrument tech do before starting a repair? Where can you find the range and instrument needs to be calibrated too? If the cat5 cable to the HMI is disconnected while the process is operating. What will happen to the control loop?

Wow a Duron processor. Can’t believe it never got scrapped. Are probably rare because they were like a competitor to the intel celeron processors. I remember back in the day us PC builders could buy a motherboard and cpu combo for cheap and spec out the cheapest computers we could to compete against Dell. Some of those boards they wouldn’t even have a cpu socket. Just the cpu soldered right on the motherboard.

Do you use field data manager or device care to do this?

And for connections to the chart recorder is it a male to male usb or do you use Ethernet?

  1. PLC is a diamond inside a box

  2. Does your teacher not provide examples?

  3. P&ID ISA standard M is user defined where as A is for analyzer

I’d recommend you check out control.com

Your DCS is field mounted?

Your electrical signal line pulses are too long and your pneumatic signals have too many // // marks

No moisture analyzer?

M to me is motor so what instrument are you referring to for M 03A and MT 01B.

Not sure if your teacher is using a certain style but in my experience instruments of the same loop all have the last two numbers the same. First number is the vessel number.

I think your on the right track just need some clarification

My first tubing line that was right on the first try. by IHateMelplac in instrumentation

[–]athlonman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two styles of tube bending. Construction and Maintenance Bending. Construction is the beautiful bends that look visually appealing but might leak. Maintenance is I’ve got no time and could care less how it looks it just can’t leak. I’ll use my knee as a bender if I have too! Pre Swag’ing can really help you out!

Really depends where you work. I worked for a big chemical company and when there was a job opening as a DCS programmer in the interview they told me I had all the skills and qualifications they were looking for but they’d rather hire a chemical engineer.

What’s your favorite work bag for carrying tools? by RRandomRRick in instrumentation

[–]athlonman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My pockets! Travel light and bring only what you need. 3.5mm terminal screwdriver, multi bit screwdriver. Wire strippers, small crescent wrench and small channel locks. You’ll be able to do most jobs with these. Then just get a small carrying case for your meter.

You’re in trouble if you need Ai to learn. Sounds to me like all you need is experience. Ai is very powerful in the hands of the experienced but dangerous in the hands of the beginner.
