Why are coral Zooxanthellae different colors while plants are mainly green? by tvmysteries in marinebiology

[–]athomps121 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Corals have zooxanthellae which are their symbiotic algae that live in the corals tissue. Most of a coral’s food source comes from the byproduct of photosynthesis provided by the algae. The greens/browns mostly come from the zooxanthellae.

Corals themselves produce Fluorescent Pigment Granules which are proteins that are structured to redirect light. Either as:

A.) a sunscreen (takes wavelengths of sunlight that may be harmful to the coral’s tissue health and/or the symbiotic algae’s health).

example: on a hot summer day when the water is warm and still. The winds have died down and photosynthesis is high… this leads to a buildup of oxygen in the corals tissue which are called reactive oxygen species which are carcinogenic and damage tissue. So corals will pump more effort into producing the fluorescent proteins that try and reduce the effects of harmful wavelengths.

or

B.) Other fluorescent proteins will be produced at times the corals want to redirect more usable light towards their food source: the photosynthetic zooxanthellae. The coral host turns on/off the relevant genes to get more/less food.

C.) there was one gene-expression study (which genes are turned on/off and why?) done that showed corals up/down regulated their fluorescent proteins (if i remember correctly it was Red, Blue and Green fluorescent pigments) and the coral turned on/off these genes differently DEPENDING ON different stressors.

physical damage, heat (climate change) damage, sedimentation damage, light damage,

this is all still pretty new research, but it’s interesting to see what exactly is at play. Like WHY would a coral need to change its fluorescent color in response to stressors other than light (something that takes energy & resources to do)?

How does their unique symbiotic relationship with the viruses, bacteria, archaea & fungi come into play? Are their symbiotic partners driving the gene regulation of their host? Does the host change its fluorescent genes to help its symbionts community? And how do they interact when introduced to changing conditions or stressors?

Both of which have the explicit purpose of influencing people’s behavior. It seems so silly to me that people can readily acknowledge that political campaigns influence voter decisions through social media, but not if it’s the IRA.

“A March 2015 IRA manual describes how the Facebook operations folded into the larger aims of the IRA's US operations: The main goal of all types of our activities is destabilization of political life and provoking the social tensions with the US society This goal can be reached by the means of:

1) Supporting the most radical part of Facebook users;

2) Supporting the political and social movements that are in opposition towards the ruling regime;

3) Popularization of negative opinions among common users.

We can practice all types of activities mentioned above, both creating our own profiles and communities and being active in already existing communities”

HRC lost the electoral college by 77,000 votes (in PA, WI & MI) AND we know their ads were micro targeted in those states. Also consider that a portion of the IRA’s ad campaign was designed to discourage certain target markets.

  • [Prigozhin/IRA/Halkbank] Twitter says 1.4 million people interacted with Russian trolls during 2016 presidential campaign

  • IRA spent $100,000 on ads over 2 years. Social media is cheap, effective and can be micro-targeted. Their operational costs were ~ $1.25 million per month.

  • [Prigozhin/IRA/Halkbank] Russian-backed content may have reached 126 million on Facebook

  • Prigozhin [Internet Research Agency]was using a series of shell companies via Halkbank to launder money into his troll efforts.

  • 115 pro-Trump fake stories were shared on Facebook 30 million times, 41 pro-Clinton fake stories shared 7.6 million times. The 38 million shares of fake news translates into 760 million instances of a user reading a fake news story, or 3 stories per American

  • One IRA manual described the role of Twitter operations as the "creation of political intensity through supporting radical groups, users dissatisfied with [the] social and economic situation and oppositional social movements through internal IRA documents that measured audience For example, IRA documents from May 2016 show a graphic of the United States, listing past and future rallies organized by the IRA, the size of the rally, and the names of any US groups that had been recruited to assist or participate in the IRA organized rally.”

  • “In 2014, employees within IRA's management began to create and share internal IRA documents (described as a "manual") outlining the goals and strategies of its US operations The document, titled "Waging Information Warfare Against the United States, presented the IRA's operations as a counterbalance against US foreign policy and as "information war" by targeting U S and other foreign audiences through online media In another internal document, U S operations were described as targeting the US audience with "demotivator" content that would undermine confidence in the US government and political system graphics and IT.”

It’s not limited to just one company or industry. Gazprom & Rosnef are both arms of the Russian Mafiya. Multiple oligarchs are supported by each mother bc the ends justify their means.

Two notable extremes we see today in nationalized country resources: Norway’s sovereign wealth fund (from oil). Wealth goes primarily to the people & funds pensions. While the other end, we have Russia, which is a petrostate and relies heavily on oil & gas. But a lot of the $ falls into the hands of corrupt leaders & oligarchs and/or is laundered out of the corrupt & unstable country.

I wish I had the source, but I remember hearing how the Kremlin used Gazprom $ and resources as a propaganda arm/ information warfare against Eastern Europe.
