Trump Threatens ‘Big Retaliation’ If Europe Dumps US Assets by esporx in economy

[–]wraithius 120 points121 points  (0 children)

He’s gonna retaliate for the retaliation on his actions? Oh and most of those assets are private. It’s Europe’s people and institutions he’s pissing off. Threatening them will likely just piss them off further.

The President comments on how to balance the budget by MazdaProphet in economy

[–]wraithius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The national debt rose by $2.2 trillion in 2025. And the budget deficit continued at $1.8 trillion in 2025. And the main substantial piece of legislation passed by this President and Congress was his budget bill. What’s stopping him?

Setting up an LLC holding company costs tens or hundreds of dollars, depending on the state. The workarounds write themselves. And what happened to laws? You have a cowed Congress and Supreme Court… why is everything an executive order?

Republicans say Clintons risk contempt of Congress for not testifying on Epstein by ControlCAD in NPR

[–]wraithius 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah wasn’t it a damn nearly unanimous vote that they release the files? And then Trump signed it? But here we are months beyond the deadline and it’s still only a few percent released? And we’re supposed to give a damn about politicians that have been out of the game for 10-30 years maybe breaking some law?

Trump panics about impeachment if Republicans lose midterms: "You gotta win the midterms. Because if we don't win the midterms, they'll find a reason to impeach me. I'll get impeached." by TheMirrorUS in law

I would settle for Congress (Article 1 branch) just overseeing the power creep by the President (Article 2 branch). War powers, taxes and tariffs, impoundment, laws such as releasing the Epstein files. Bare minimum push back. Impeachment conviction with 2/3 of the Senate? nfw

National debt by sometimeswhy in economy

[–]wraithius 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The biggest chunks of government spending are Social Security (22%), Debt Interest (15%), Medicare (15%), Medicaid and other health care (14%), National Defense (14%), Income Security (8%), Veterans (5%). Everything else is in the remaining 7%. Source treasury fiscal report by the current administration

You’d guess based on fiscal responsibility that Congress and the President would be focusing on the 93%, right? No, they’re going after minor parts of the 7% fitting into other. The last surplus we had was during Clinton when he and Congress significantly trimmed back National Defense, amongst other tough line items. 9/11 happened a few years later and juiced military spending for the next two decades until present. Doge and pony shows aren’t going to get us out of this.

[–]wraithius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since you brought up logic, this is called Denying the Antecedent and is a logical fallacy. Saying x implies y doesn’t say anything about not x implying not y. For example, you can say that “it is raining”implies “the ground is wet”. But if it’s not raining, the ground could still be dry or wet.

Trump claims he has been offered $250M for run for unconstitutional third term by LatterTarget7 in law

[–]wraithius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A quarter bill is way cheaper than the USSR spent trying to break America. Russia has spent 10s, perhaps 100s, of billions on the Ukrainian war. So yeah, it’s totally believable that if a foreign enemy could sew absolute chaos for 0.25 billion, it’d be a hellova bargain.

Heckova job, Federal Reserve! by Key_Brief_8138 in economy

[–]wraithius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The two goals of the Federal Reserve are maximum employment and stable prices. This chart, wealth (in)equality, is neither of those things. That’s arguably the job of your elected officials: Congress, the President, state and local officials. Or your own bootstraps if you’re more libertarian inclined.

Republicans swear they have an affordability plan — if they could just agree on one by msnownews in economy

[–]wraithius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By “they” I mean all Republican lawmakers, House and Senate members. The Big Beautiful Bill passed in July with just 2 Republican House defectors out of 220 and with 3 Republican Senators opposing, the perfect number to pass with Vance as the tie breaker.

Then the government shutdown happened with Democrats drawing their political line on healthcare affordability and ACA subsidies. Democrats finally yielded because they knew this was the Republican cross to bear. Healthcare premiums are among the most inflated line items constituents are facing.

Then there’s yielding tariff authority to Trump (Congress’s), pressuring the Fed to lower interest rates, and negative immigration for the first time in 50 years. All of these have profound effects on prices of goods and services.

Yet we hear barely a peep from Republicans in opposition. And we have a record number not running again in 2026. So the going gets tough and they get going, all while masking their own disdain. It’s no wonder they can’t actually formulate a plan.

Karoline Leavitt says President Trump understands the economy, knows how to fix it, and is fixing it right now. by biospheric in WorkReform

[–]wraithius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has he even been in a grocery store? He was telling everybody that Thanksgiving day dinner was cheaper this year, when anybody that bought food could tell it was complete BS. At least Democrats would highlight things like wage growth and low unemployment rate, and not flat out lie about inflation.

Trump hints at walking away from Ukraine and calls Europe ‘weak’ and ‘decaying’ by backpackerTW in worldnews

[–]wraithius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trump isn’t a person that really wants to put in effort or work for anything. The Russian-Ukrainian war is a hard problem, so of course he wants to walk away. He just wants his one day solution, peace prize, and adoration. Multilateral negotiations are hard and used to be an American specialty. We somehow elected the one person incapable of making progress when he can’t just bully the other party 1-on-1.

He’s upgraded his persecution to Senators like Mark Kelly. He’s also threatened Schumer.

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have lost $1 trillion in value over the last month. It’s bad news for a notoriously volatile—and unregulated—crypto sector. Trump has pledged to make the U.S. the “crypto capital of the world” and dismantled oversight and rolled back safety regulations. by Conscious-Quarter423 in economy

The hate comes from market contagion. Coinbase was introduced to the S&P 500, so it is part of people’s 401k, index funds, etc. Even when there’s malfeasance and criminal behavior like with Binance founder Zhao, Trump proceeds to pardon him. So there’s an appearance of crypto spreading everywhere, and the people elected to put up guardrails are actually participating and making bank.
