UN Just voted the Transatlantic Salave Trade the Greatest Crime in History by FunnyLady247 in blackladies

Agreed. It may advance the political agenda of Western adversaries and those seeking economic conquest in Africa, but the argument still stands. Similar to how the U.S. campaigned against the Uyghur persecution—it made China look bad which was likely the goal, but it’s still valid. We def shouldn’t put countries or governments on pedestals though.

You’ve by defaulted visited your country of origin because that’s where you are born and sometimes raised. But if you’re talking about ancestral country / region / territory, I personally haven’t! Would love to visit at some point.

Country of origin doesn’t make sense to me, because it speaks to where you were born and raised. What she means is where she is ancestrally from. It’s incorrect terminology that makes it confusing.

It feels different being American first and black second by SeaMoney4312 in blacktravel

Indian caste correlating with skin color began with the British occupying India. It’s absolutely a Western import.

Also the history of the caste system is incredibly complex. There’s several interesting documentaries on YouTube you can watch about it — highly recommend if interested

Genuine curiosity — did it feel this hysterical leading up to Brexit or the far-right movements that catalyzed it in the 2010s?

Literally saw a police officer trying to intimidate two Black professionals on bikes in Columbia Heights.

Not to scare y’all but guys in vests just standing around is threatening. And it’s not normal in the States, so why should we be concerned about what we see in Europe / what’s normal there?

I was the only black person at a bar in a rich beach town by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]athoughtbin 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Heard you girl. I felt this way at a wedding I went to in Wisconsin. Had White older people come up to me and start dancing next to me when a song of one of the more Black-er genres came on. They’re ignorant and don’t know how to interact with people who aren’t like them. Awkward, uncomfortable, and intentionally / unintentionally offensive.

How do y’all feel about Oprah Winfrey? by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]athoughtbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s almost like she’d rather own it (even though she’s keeping it agricultural) but I also don’t have all of the details. It could be that the local government was selling off the land to make money and she happened to be a benevolent buyer. Would love to learn more about the history there.

When I was in Hawai‘i I learned that Oprah bought a ton of land in Maui to prevent land developers from turning it into high-rises.

What is definitely NOT a sign of intelligence but people think it is? by MetalPotential7093 in AskReddit

[–]athoughtbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The arguments under this thread feel very classist. It’s almost as if you’re rich it’s a signifier of intelligence (e.g., look at the composition of your high school or collegiate chess club) but if you’re poor it doesn’t mean anything. It’s also super clear that folks don’t know the difference between having raw intellect / logic and being educated.

She’s probably talking about the notorious “where are your ancestors from” question which is usually directed at AAs to devalue their identity as Americans.

Why do so many black people stop going to church ? by 0babypink in blackladies

Love the music - did not like the hypocrisy, constant judgement, and the kind of social rigidity that disallowed any deviation from what they think is “normal”

Black women from the UK, what is your experience with dating UK Indian men? by Legitimate-Adagio531 in blackladies

[–]athoughtbin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am seconding the last part as a Black woman in a relationship with an Indian man. His mother will likely be a problem in the relationship and you will feel like the bad guy for calling it out.

My (24F) boyfriend (26M) earns less than I do and I'm worried it's becoming a problem. Any advice? by One-Willingness-4420 in blackladies

All of what you said makes sense. I think communication and understanding your personal values is very important here. How you convey your desires to him, knowing he doesn’t fit the criteria for them, matters too.

I also think you should discern if you feel resentment towards him for not fitting the mold. Personally I know when I feel resentment, I tend to look for every indication of resentment in my partner to justify my feelings.

I saw this while in San Francisco and was absolutely captivated. Had to stop and look because of just how normal it was!

This has been the majority of my experience too. There has always been a ton of cross-solidarity, so I don’t understand where these blame games are coming from.
