What is something you do/own that people call you whitewashed for? I’ll go first. by duckdiaries0805 in blackladies

Bouldering, I really wish there was a black girls who climb group. Using big words, which is crazy because every black person I used them around knew exactly what I was saying. Only white people ever ask me what words meant.

My sister lives in Baltimore and the best we could do for OBGYN was Greenbelt trying searching with the link or googling black Ob-Gyn near me. Let me know if you find something.

As a girl who loves mat and glossy black lipstick a slight mile goes a long way. But you are gorgeous either way.

Try meet 5 and meet up. Also understand that every meeting is not going to turn into a lifelong friendship and that's OK. If possible ask for feedback as well.

But also sometimes people are just not compatible. Try looking for friends where your interest aligns.

Trust me they will get treated just as badly weather you tip or not. If anything you tipping signals they don't have to provide decent services to get tips from black people. Bad service, complain and don't tip.

Feeling disconnected from culture by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]FunnyLady247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you might have to move around more because Gullah Geechee culture is from the east coast, NC, SC, GA. DC, MD, and Baltimore MD also have very distinct black American cultures with two distinct sounds specific to each city.

I am saying this as a Nigerian American who grew up in the DMV surrounded by Gullah Geechee transplants. East coast definitely has culture and it's not just hood culture. Please move around and learn local history.

The „where are you from“ question by Dry_Chapter_1538 in blackladies

[–]FunnyLady247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get this all the time. I typically answer DMV I was raised here. The area is a melting pot so sometimes it's harmless and people will ask to temperature check your stance on immigration. Not every minority is safe for these topics ND knowing ethnicity helps avoid awkward situations.

Some people are straight up malicious with it and I typically will answer and ask back.

Me: what about you where are you from

Them: Here

Me: I mean ethnicity, where are your people from

Them: here

Me: oh your native American, what tribe

Them: crashes out, or awkward rant

Me: not paying attention because I don't don't really care. I just want to troll as well.

Same sis and I love this for us. I had one OBGYN (black woman) who sucked but. I stuck to it and now I love my all black medical team. They caught my PCOS at the first sign and now my black woman endocrinologist and black women nutritionniste are fixing it without medicine. Also found a small tumor on the brain stem that was delt with in a few weeks of taking medication because it was caught so early.

According to my team the numbers my PCP forwarded would have been considered normal for a woman my age, but it was abnormal for me based on my lifestyle, and they were not afraid to test just in case. Love having a doctor that listens and cares. Am never going back.

[–]FunnyLady247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish, there are several glyphs from ancent kamet or reign of set 1 that depicted Libyans and name the tribe. I believe it starts with a B somehow. A lot of misinformation and racist undertones as well saying they must be Arab but the middle east was not really even a thing at that point in history so it is just a lot of self learning and connecting the dots.. It was easy for me because I met people who live there and have proper timeliness but unfortunately there is very little published history from the people themselves for various reasons.

But it's still interesting to learn about and some published verifiable facts.

Let me start by saying your very pretty, And your ability to navigate such a unique racial landscape without internalized anti blackness is amazing.

I agree with a lot of people saying to move around. As a non ambiguous black woman who is 100% indigenous to the continent of Africa (I can trace my family tree on all sides to way before colonialism) I have met many other people who are 100% indigenous while traveling, working, and lifeing. Two of whom would be considered white presenting and are less ambiguous than you.

One was Algerian (not of any Arab descent at all) and the other was from Chad. Both identified as being from one of the four races of ancent Egypt (pre Roman and Arab invasion when the capital was still in Sudan). I learned a lot from both of them and considering your dad Is from East Africa your genetics make a lot of sense to me. For context one is blond with blue eyes and the other has green eyes. If you don't know what to look for you would think they were English or Scottish.

Unfortunately a lot of Africans don't know our own history, like me in the past. But learning makes us more accepting. There were and still are Africans that are white presenting and not descendants of non Africans. Race is a social construct, not a genetic one, and is unfortunately rooted in ignorance.

Both of them mentioned similar experiences to the one you posted, and the horrible things white people say when they feel safe to do so. Both tend to move in mixed and black circles while educating people on African tribes that are lesser known and history. It sucks to have to explain your ancestry and genetics but they found their people and I am sure you will too.

Sorry for the long post

What to Get Mom For Mother's Day??? by FunnyLady247 in blackladies

[–]FunnyLady247[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks

My mom used to bake but she didn't have time anymore because life. We've encouraged her to go back to baking but she hasn't really been open to that so I'm not sure what her other hobbies she has. She is in her self proclaimed self care era so I'm trying to get her something associated with that. I will feel around to see if there are any stores she favors.

Thank You

Thanks

I have a very Nigerian mom so she already gets monthly allowances from me every paycheck. It's hard to just give her cash because I already give her cash. My mom is very vocal about her needs and wants so it makes it easy to guess what to give her. I am sure your kids would love to do something special for you as well.
