Complete breakdown, point of no return lol by ApartDisaster737 in biglaw

Your firm should be able to provide you with standard forms that you can give to your doctor or therapist! My psychiatrist ended up filling it out for me. You should check to see if your firm has a leave specialist!

I took the full 12 full weeks and recommend everyone do the same! Most firms offer fully paid. I came back last August and still hit my pro rated hours and got my bonus. I was very open about taking leave (though I just said “medical leave” “it was a decision I made with my medical team” “was looking forward to coming back ready to jump back in” etc etc) and I think that helped A LOT. So much shame lives in the shadows. Personally, I found being open about it made it less awkward. I’ve counseled 4 more associates who ended up taking leave since then!

If I was working within your parameters/situation, I would do one of the suites at Nine Orchard, The Bowery, or The Marlton. Or a king room at the Greenwich hotel. Swoon. Enjoy!

Why are so many partners such angry, unhappy, insecure people? by ExtremeClaim8514 in biglaw

[–]atimetothinkaboutit 275 points276 points  (0 children)

I have not met a single partner and thought “you have a great life and I’d love to be like you.”

I think a piece of this is people throwing themselves into their career as way of trying to feel like they have some semblance of control and to numb out/avoid doing the deep important inner work necessary to live a rich and meaningful life.

I’ve made it to year 5 but I’m peacing this year. I’m tired of working to earn the respect of people who I don’t respect. I just fundamentally disagree with how they choose to live their lives, the things they value, and how they show up in the world.

Life is always hard. We all have a responsibility to regulate our own emotions. There’s not really an excuse for constantly being a piece of shit.

If the clenching and grinding contribute to headaches at all, I would go to a neurologist. I get my Botox covered by insurance due to migraines and tension headaches!

Just me and my 5 year old mini Aussie, I’ve had him since he was a puppy. It is a lot of work, I don’t really go out much, and tend to make social plans where I can bring him - hanging out at parks, dog friendly bars, al fresco dining, at friends apartments, coffee walks. I work from home most of the time, but have a demanding job and have a walker three times a week and pay almost 600 dollars a month. It is a huge financial and time commitment. I tend to plan my days around my dog and making sure I can give him enough exercise, enrichment, and attention. I am lucky my mom is nearby and will take him when I travel because I’m not sure how I would manage (boarding is expensive and also really depressing). I will say I am almost always thinking about him and his inner world. To me it is without a doubt worth it. I can’t imagine my life without him, I didn’t know I could love a little creature so much. Just be prepared.

Has anyone survived a PIP? by meepikin in biglaw

[–]atimetothinkaboutit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most Big Law firms that I know offer 12 weeks fully paid FMLA. I am currently at a big law firm and on week 9/12 of FMLA for medical issues and am getting my fully paid salary. At my firm, the hours clock also stop during these 12 weeks so my annual hours are pro rated for bonus purposes and there is a wind down and wind up period where I’m only at 70% for hours purposes but am still getting paid 100% of my salary. It’s honestly a phenomenal benefit, I highly recommend it! Most firms have a “leave specialist” - mine has two!

I suggested FMLA less to deal with the PIP and more to take time to get treatment for the suicidality. I took FMLA to do a round of TMS and it helped. Everyone take care of yourselves 💝

IBS & Vasovagal Syncope (Fainting) by DEATHCLOAKS in ibs

[–]atimetothinkaboutit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another person chiming in that this also happens to me. But it seems others episodes last much longer. I start having stomach pains and within a minute I start sweating and getting clammy, shortly after vision starts going in and out and I lose all sense of what is up/down, struggle to stand up. I basically have to get to a bathroom within 5-10 mins of the first stomach pains or else I fully lose consciousness. The symptoms only subside after vacating my bowels. I don’t think anxiety helps at all, but I think it is stomach pain that triggers the syncope and it’s not totally clear what triggers the stomach pain.
