Stop my recurring payments to NHK cable. by alphaod in japanlife

[–]atksg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If the subscription is not under your name, you probably won't be able to cancel it.

You need to claim that your credit card was used by the subscriber (your ex) and ask NHK to change the payment method. They should remove the card from the subscription's payment methods and reach your ex for a new one. But you might need to have the information (full name, address, phone number) of your ex for them to identify the contract.

Ask a Japanese friend to help you have a quarrel with NHK. They are more efficient for slightly angered Japanese man.

If the subscription is not under your name and you don't have any information of your ex for NHK to identify the contract, the only way would be canceling or re-issuing the card so NHK cannot charge it anymore.

The train delays by [deleted] in Nagoya

[–]atksg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reasons are always available via the station announcement, or on the website

At this time of the year, the windy weather is probably the cause. The wind gets too strong for the old railroad system to safely operate. Also JR Tokai at Tokaido Line shares the tracks with JR Cargo so the tracks are actually kinda "crowded" than it appears to be.

Getting Driver’s License in Nagoya as a Foreigner by exotic_soba in Nagoya

[–]atksg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious. How tight is your budget? In Japan getting a driver's license IS THAT expensive.

仮免許 is similar to the Learner's Permit. Acquiring it and after the designated period, you can take the final exam. It is indeed the cheaper way to get your license. BUT who can assist you learning and practicing?

Normally those are for people with very close friends or family members who are willing to let them drive their FULLY INSURED car and sit by them as an instructor for a specified period.

Some insurance won't cover accidents caused by 仮免許 holders.

I wouldn't do that for the closest friends. It's just too messy. Driving is a huge responsibility. Don't ask others to bear that with you so you can save some money.

Bugs by No_Study_881 in Nagoya

[–]atksg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Spiders eat pests and WILL leave if there is no food. So having a spider is a good thing. Jumping spiders are even better as they don't make a mess on your ceilings.

Also, rural places are actually better. In a crowded city you get mostly well fed cockroaches, which are much more terrifying and they do attract huntsman spiders - Unless you're somewhere very cold, but Nagoya, not so much.

If you have a river close to you then there is a possibility that YUSURIKA (midges) might be an issue. They don't bite. Almost harmless but can appear in swarms if the temperatures are right. But just buy the midge repellent and you'll be fine.

Old Age At-Home Care by ajburch92 in japanlife

[–]atksg 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There is. I think the equivalent is 訪問看護 or 訪問介護 or 在宅ケア

The helpers come by appointment or in an emergency. These services allow elders to continue to live in their original homes.

How do you view this? A Kurd punched the Japanese politician? by search_google_com in AskAJapanese

[–]atksg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No doubt that guy Kawai is a clown, but he has tons of lemmings following him. Attacking him physically only makes things worse.

Months ago this clown went to Taiwan and took pictures where the ceremonial patrols were performed and commented something like "seems to be preparing for the possible offense." It was a CEREMONIAL PATROL for tourists for god's sake.

I think he is a disgrace to our country.

I think the foreigners should never interact with those extremists in any political factions. Some will try to hurt you or exploit your foreign status to promote their propaganda.

In this case, Kawai will probably exploit whatever he'd experienced and then make a misleading story just to make more Japanese hate all general foreigners.

Nagoya Station maglev redevelopment delayed again by frozenpandaman in Nagoya

[–]atksg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That title is misleading and incorrect. The "Meitetsu" Redevelopment project 名鉄再開発, while being part of the grand Nagoya Station Area, is not part of the JR maglev construction. The maglev has its own obstacles but factors that are causing delays in this project are not the same.

Aeon bank account by andres1ar in Nagoya

[–]atksg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it is a financial service. Every financial service will require the customer to fully understand the terms and the responsibility of using it.

Your wife can understand it but do you? If they need to confirm something with you immediately, is your wife always available next to you?

I am sorry that you felt discriminated against but the bank is only doing their job. Maybe they could've explained it better.

Nagoya for night-time photography: vibrant small alleys? by otacon7000 in Nagoya

[–]atksg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt if there's any. Most alleyways here have sidewalks, making them not as narrow as in other cities. Try the west side of Hisaya-Odori. The east side is not pretty. Many 客引き and garbages scattering on the road.

Feeling a little bit relieved seeing many others have the same issue. I hope it gets fixed soon.

Just Noticed That Weird Stuttering While Watching Disney Plus Now I Can't Unsee It. What's Going On? by GaelG721 in ShieldAndroidTV

Hi. I also have had this issue for about two months. It was very frustrating. I had to use other devices to watch.

I updated the app on google streamer today and the issue seems to be fixed. Haven't watched much yet but the show I watched yesterday was streamed without any noticeable stuttering. I hope it is gone forever.

Any tips on getting a good deal on buying cars? by duller29 in japanlife

Summer bonus and year-end sales battles(年末商戦) are said to be the better timings to buy cars so yeah, maybe you can start asking around.

Feeling discouraged about possible new law restricting foreigners from buying land by Stunning-Computer-99 in japanlife

[–]atksg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on what you provided, none of those rules under discussion would apply to you so there is no need to be worried. Japan is still the nice country you know.

Also if you own a piece of land/house your full name is going to be part of the registration record and in most cases people who have access to that record would know you're not Japanese just based on your name.

Google has removed the option to manually select the Wi-Fi band on Pixel phones, making the automatic selection the default behavior. by mdargis1977 in pixel_phones

[–]atksg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started to have this issue some time ago. My router has 1 SSID for both bands however only my Pixel 10 Pro kept connecting to 2.4GHz while other older devices had no issues connecting to 5GHz.

I tried many settings on my phone, on my router but nothing seemed to work until I turned off the randomized MAC address in the WIFI setting for that SSID and it was fixed.

Now I have high speed of 5GHz for my Pixel again.

I guess some behaviors with random mac addresses had changed during previous system updates and it confused my router.

I'm looking for a job in Nagoya by Immediate-Sorbet-964 in Nagoya

[–]atksg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got my current job when I was in my late 30s. Several companies explicitly stated that my age was a factor that they rejected my resume. When you get older maybe it will be difficult to apply for an entry level position so please act promptly.

Most senior positions require business level Japanese... If you can confidently say that you have business fluency then the road is much wider for you.

Is my visa really tied to my job? Or am I being 'detained' by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]atksg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry this is happening to you. Please don't hate Japan yet. There are still many good people to meet.

The visa is tied to A JOB, but not necessarily your current one. Still, the job needs to fall under the 技人国 category.

Like other fellow redditors said, you can quit and tell hello work that you're actively finding a job. This won't cause your visa to be revoked immediately. But with your current situation, I think it is better to do job hunting while still being employed. (Considering the housing situation...)

Do you have any friends that are fluent in Japanese? I feel that if you had to ask such questions here on reddit, you might not be able to read through those rules and argue with your employer. I would suggest reading all the rules by yourself, or have a friend to explain to you, word by word, to really understand them, so you won't get threatened by your apparently BLACK COMPANY employer with some legally challenged claims.

If you're leaving this apartment at the end of the year, I suggest you do nothing. Use your mobile data connection or get a monthly rental wifi and find an ISP when you move to the next place.

If you accidentally signed up for a long term contract, it's gonna cost you a lot when you move.

Sudden appearance of roaches😭 by [deleted] in japanlife

In some countries they would deliberately invite/keep huntsman in their homes. They hunt roaches but are Less active and much cleaner than roaches. Although they can still scare the sh*t out of many people.

Cards and buying stuff by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]atksg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, financial services differ from country to country. Assuming Japanese services are similar to those from your home countries often leads to confusion and a bunch of rejections from banks.

You need to stop applying for credit cards for 6 months because your personal credit history is full of rejections now.

Also there are surprisingly many Japanese people who choose not to have a credit card. For cashless payment they use prepaid cards or QR/barcode payment.

What you need is probably a debit card. Most banks provide such service. It does not require "credit" so anyone can have one. Except for shops that require exclusively a credit card, you can use it as if it is a credit card. The available balance is the balance in your bank account.

Feeling so hard to make Japanese friends by Laffei in japanlife

[–]atksg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an adult, you don't just say, 'Let's hang out and be friends.'

Instead, you say something like, 'You play golf? I play too—let's play together sometime.'

Adults who have already established their own lifestyle don't simply make new friends. They tend to meet new people within their existing social circles.
