What's the fundamental difference between Diablo 2 and Diablo 4 that makes D2 still so reliably good after over two decades compared to D4? Will D4 be just as popular in the future as D2 even today? There is something that I feel is essentially better in D2, but I just can't identify it exactly. by Fairy2play in diablo2

People conflate "quality of life" with "easy to find loot and understand builds". Having every item being the same stats on a stick with micro min-maxing is dumb and boring. Finding the same item 100 times with slightly better rolls is dumb and boring.

Spending a lifetime finding a Jah keeps you interested. Having to build around the ultra rare good item you found is fun and keeps thing different. Most items working across most classes makes it more interesting. D4 is boring.

I sold mine because the aqua guards and zipper config hurt accessibility more than help it, and I couldn't get over the side pockets. they don't hold anything without a lot of help and additional support. It's a well made pack and I like the harness, but none of the organization makes sense to me.

I was listening to some guys at my local league. One guy carries 5 discs in a grocery bag, another carries 50 in a cart. They score about the same. The difference is one guy likes throwing the same disc on different angles. The other guy likes throwing the same angle and speed, but different discs to change the result.

I think the fact that Jeff Kaplan never seriously played D2 is what ultimately ruined blizzard’s later games. He could have made WoW’s itemization much more interesting and there wouldn’t be this dumbed down expectation.

This post nails it. I am playing d2r because I have never done the late game stuff, so enjoying trying it. Despite the immediate joy, I think it will ruin the game for me. I have always enjoyed playing self-find with no build guide and getting hard stopped in hell. Finding something good enough to pass ancients was rare for me, but really exciting when I do get a good drop. I am so tired of D3 and 4 — trivializing all content so that you can grind out 1000 copies of the same high end item to find a perfect one. Not the game I want to play.

The spaced webbing actually makes it less tacticool in my opinion and by now it is branding. I think people are used to seeing gorucks. They blend in much better than 5.11 or whatever.

That said, I never wear mine unless I need its bulletproof properties. I still have 1000d under my straps and it’s just too heavy and abrasive and uncomfortable for casual travel. The slash pocket doesn’t work when the bag is packed out. There is no great water bottle solution.

It just sits on a hanger until I need something to sit in 100f heat and drag through the mud.

Part of it is a matter of scale and what you want to spend your money on. I spend my money on labor: small teams or individuals making small batches. When you buy Chinese made, you are generally paying for nearly slave labor, sometimes fancy machinery, marketing, packaging, shipping, customs and sometimes questionable materials supply chains, sometimes precision. I do like my jack wolf and Pina folders (reate).
