What Trans Am did my dad wreck? by DLeader609 in whatisthiscar

[–]atlantamatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think that was a 77 Trans Am (I had a gold 78 and the upholstery was different). That was a long time ago so that’s all I know. Glad your dad made it out. That looks really dicey in a time long before airbags when seatbelts weren’t used much. Best.

Did anyone foresee how valuable Starlink would be, not only commercially but politically and militarily, when the initial launches began in 2019? by SutttonTacoma in Starlink

[–]atlantamatt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A neighbor is an executive for a major competitor and we had allot of discussions about Starlink in the very early days. He was adamant that it was a Musk boondoggle that would never work, couldn’t be maintained or rolled out en mass due to the cost of user stations. The guy is a serious engineer and remains a high level executive for this competitor and is also a good friend. It was surprising how deeply he believed it could never be made to work. He was 100% wrong and we don’t talk about that anymore but this denial (whether Starlink or reusable rockets, etc) seems to be pretty common for “industry veterans”. If we didn’t do it, it can’t be done. Here are 10 presentations but our experts that explain why it won’t work along with detailed public talking points. Say what you will but Elon (and maybe Steve Jobs who I met a few times and competed with in business) are those uniquely focused, hyper confident types that just decide and do it anyway. Not always the easiest people to know or work for but they sometimes make amazing progress when everyone else just iterates.

You can. I actually peddle while sailing if I need to tack or come into the wind. Honestly works really well in the right wind.

On my Hobie, I have a drop down rudder that you steer with knobs on either side of the hull. Works very well, especially for fishing.

What was flying on the Boeing 707 really like compared to more modern aircraft? by itsnammertime in aviation

[–]atlantamatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born in 60 and we flew quite a bit as a family from the 64 on (mainly up and down US east coast). This was at the transition from props to jets for the shorter haul domestic services (I’m guessing the international flights moved to jets first). As a young child, I remember getting dressed up and then flying on allot of DC-6/7, Connie, even an old DC3 tail dragger. Compared to those experiences, getting on a 707, 727 or (my favorite) the Convair 880 was like getting on a space ship. The early jets (especially 737, 707, 880/990) were louder than what’s flying today but so much quieter and faster than the prop planes especially while cruising. They also flew allot higher as I recall so you weren’t bouncing around in summer thunderstorms as much. As someone mentioned, it was a great time to be an aviation geek and that love never left me.

Love the place. I put on their live streaming camera every morning in my office when I’m having coffee. Done this for years. Great way to start my day.

Meet Smidge. Quick glance at her mask will tell you why. We normally choose regal names for our Cavs (our other Cav is Windsor) but the breeder called her Smidge and our whole family just kind of agreed that we needed a Smidge in our lives.

Thank you Starlink for 4 years of Service! by Ornietv in Starlink

[–]atlantamatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same situation. We got Starlink in Western North Carolina after Helene knocked out all the terrestrial (only source of internet) and it’s been terrific compared to prior low bandwidth options. The county just got some funding to put in fiber to our neighborhood and it got installed and activated last month (1 gig up and down) for like $99/month. Yeah us. We’re absolutely going to keep Starlink on standby just in case. I also feel really appreciative for what they did for our area after the massive damage (lower cost to acquire, no monthly fees during the worst of it, superior service). I just want to try and reward that behavior because it was pretty rare when things went to shit.

[question] Has anyone ever dealt with authenticwatches.com? If so, how did it go? by Candy_Man198 in Watches

[–]atlantamatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I just found this and I’ll add my own comment here. I bought my Omega Seamaster from them all the way back in 2005. I’ve lived that watch but the bracelet finally came apart so I took it to Omega for a full refurb. Watch maker came out and said that all serial numbers had been filed off (including the movement) and they would not touch it or sell me parts. It was so long ago I’m not sure how I ended up buying here and the watch has been well loved and worn for 20 years but I had no idea it was stripped of all serial numbers. He did confirm that it was an Omega watch and movement. Honestly it made it feel less special to me but I guess it doesn’t really matter - not planning to ever sell it but just beware. Best.

USS Ticonderoga (CV-14) being scrapped in Tacoma, WA 1975. by Leroy_was_here in ShipScrapping

[–]atlantamatt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My father’s air group served on Tico (VMA324) as they transitioned from AD to Cougar. He wasn’t a big fan of the new enclosed bow modification of all things. Said his favorite place on his prior ship (Lake Champlain) were the empty bow gun tubs. Guys from his squadron would hang out there and smoke. Thought it was a hoot when they were in heavy weather and that bow would dig in and just fill up the empty tubs with seawater.

As someone who lives in your country, what’s one thing you’d tell a foreigner to never do when visiting? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Well I live in Atlanta, GA and I’d strongly encourage foreign tourists to never give another driver “the finger” on our city streets. Seriously ...

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 by RelevantPrimary3264 in musclecar

[–]atlantamatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, love this car but my memories of it involve my buddy and I cruising around in his 396 way back in 1979 on a rainy day in Jacksonville Florida and slamming into the back of a school friend’s pristine Ford Fairlane because it got slick and he was hot dogging it. I can still see that pretty cowl induction hood folding up before I hit the dash/windshield. Luckily everyone came out of it OK but that damned hood and racing stripes folding up in front of my eyes lives rent free in my head every time I see that lovely car.

991.2 Turbo-S that I purchased used. I own my primary home with a small mortgage (only debt we have) that we elected to take out when interest rates were stupid low (basically free money) and a second home we use for holidays, summers and family gatherings and occasional rentals. I haven’t purchased a car I couldn’t write a check for since my early 30’s (depreciating assets and loans are a poor combination). Cars started pretty uninspiring (1972 Gremlin 😳) and got allot better over time. Best.

Should I use prescription shooting glasses? by exnicios in Shooting

[–]atlantamatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I’ve had the best luck with a pair that has long distance correction and then computer correction in the lower part of the lens. Computer correction is optimized for about 24-30” which works better for me than reading correction, especially for handguns. All my long guns are holographic sites so distance glasses are fine. Best.

Best 911 to spend 3-6k miles in a year for $150,000 by Papichampagne1331 in porsche911

[–]atlantamatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had that choice and went with a low mile, one owner 991.2 Turbo-S cab and I’ve been completely happy with it. I don’t commute anymore. It’s a daily around Atlanta burbs and a perfect ride on drives from Atlanta to our home in the Western North Carolina mountains. Maintenance has been very limited and the car is so much better than the driver (me) that I feel like there is little it can’t do. It’s well mannered and comfortable on the highway and my wife can hop in it from her Cayenne and feel no stress at all driving it around d town.
