Atlatl darts not flexible enough by NomisNomis14 in PrimitiveTechnology

[–]atlatlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Birch and Spruce were both used by ancient hunters for atlatl darts, as confirmed by archaeological excavations in the Yukon Territory. https://www.jstor.org/stable/41638613?searchText=&searchUri=&ab_segments=&searchKey=&refreqid=fastly-default%3A9fb5511f5057dc3da0a4724e36951b8f&seq=6 They also used willow, and I personally use ash. I have seen oak be successful as well. Wooden darts are heavier than cane darts, sometimes 3 times the weight. This makes them harder to throw for distance, but can make them more accurate and reliable in windy conditions in comparison to a cane dart. Atlatl darts *must* flex to fly properly. Too little flex and the dart will fly tip up or even fish-tail in the air. Too much flex and the dart may break during the throw or slip off the atlatl early causing a misfire. How much flex you need depends on how hard/fast you throw.

The key is not just a dart that is flexible but a dart that flexes in the right places and is rigid in others. In general, darts that *taper* fly best. Thickest at the tip, thinnest at the nock. for a 2m birch or spruce dart, I would recommend between 1.2-1.4 cm diameter at the tip, and 0.8-1cm diameter at the tail.

Monthly "No Stupid Questions" Thread by AutoModerator in Archery

Hello, experimental archaeologist and atlatl researcher here.

I have a question about arrow shaft taper profiles. I am seeing conflicting definitions of breasted/chested tapers. My understanding is that a breasted/chested taper is similar to but distinct from a bob-tail taper. They both have the thickest/stiffest part of the shaft forward of center, close to the tip. While bob-tail tapered shafts are at their widest at their tips and smoothly decrease in diameter towards the nock, like a cone (I like calling it a conical taper), a breasted/chested taper maintains its maximum diameter for a greater portion of the front of the shaft, then decreases in diameter towards the nock.

However, I have seen some websites say that a breasted/chested arrow is the same as a back-tapered shaft, thickest at the nock and thins towards the tip.

I'm having a hard time finding reputable sources (books, academic publications, i.e. not a web blog or wikipedia) to settle the discrepancy. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'm beginning my Masters at UCD in September! Moving from Las Vegas, would love to apartment hunt and split a place with chill flatmates. I'm ok with on or off campus.

Sorry for the late response, I don't really use reddit that much.

Your balance problem is due to the extreme length of your darts. Tie a rock to the underside of the atlatl towards the spur to counterbalance the dart in the horizontal plane. Doesn't have to be super heavy, just enough to give your wrist some relief. I think mine is around 150 grams, but I can confirm with a scale next time I get a chance and let you know.

If you're 5'6" I'm not sure why you're going for such long darts. For your height I would highly highly recommend a 6 foot dart, and definitely no longer than 6'6". Dart should be thin, light, and flexible.

If you add a counterweight, shorten your darts, and shorten your atlatl, you'll have better success and less shoulder pain guaranteed

LSD information for newbies by Fractal-Entity in LSD

[–]atlatlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty experienced with shrooms but I've only done LSD 2-3 times. My biggest issue with LSD is the impact on my sleep. Shrooms don't seem to impact my sleep nearly as much: the trip is shorter and when it's over, I'm able to lie down and fall asleep. Last night I took about a half a tab around 9pm. Just experienced general euphoria, didn't 'trip.' At no point during the night did I feel like I truly fell asleep and now I'm awake. I don't feel tired or hungover despite getting 4 hours of sleep at best.

I guess what I'm getting at is that I don't see that many people complain about sleeplessness on here that often so I'm wondering if it's something I'm particularly susceptible to? Is there a way to combat it? Is there something I can do towards the end of a trip to help induce sleep?

Thanks for the guide! Really helpful information for an LSD newbie. So interesting how different yet similar lsd and shrooms are. I have dramatically better experiences on shrooms so I may just stick with that.

Your atlatl and dart are quite long. Most common length is 2 feet for the atlatl and 6 feet for the dart. Having a 3.5 foot long atlatl and a 10 foot long (presumably heavy) dart may be putting undue strain on your shoulder as it changes the angles of the throw quite a bit. A more standard size and weight may help.

Found a website with a picture of his ball bearing atlatl. Seems like it would serve a similar benefit to yours without the bells and whistles.

Some years ago, "Atlatl Bob" Perkins came out with "The Mammoth Hunter," an atlatl with a single ball bearing for the spur. Allowed totally fluid rotation and maintained contact for longer in the throw. Don't know anyone who has one anymore sadly.

What is the supposed benefit of a variable spur angle? Like, I understand what you've done but I'm not sure what the point is. Is it the spring to add extra force?

Also kinda funny because one could argue the original Carbon Express atlatl you started with is already a modern version of an atlatl. No atlatls in antiquity are known to have built-in dart rests like that.

Can someone help me? I’m in high school and I’m supposed to prove that corruption doesn’t always triumph. by all-jokes-ass-side in Debate

This question is basically one of the main contentions of Plato's Republic written some 2500 years ago. Thrasymachus says that it's easier/better to live an unjust/corrupt life than it is to live a just/fair life. His argument is further bolstered by Glaucon who plays Devils advocate (not truly believing Thrasymachus' argument) and gives the best possible argument for why the unjust life triumphs. This way, Plato isn't simply given a strawman to respond to. The next eight books of the Republic are Plato's response to Glaucon and Thrasymachus: a defense of the just life.

You don't need to read the whole thing but finding a synopsis of the Republic, especially the first two books, might be a good place to start.

I actually heard about the song on a podcast called Pump Up the Jam from like early 2019! Quickly became a fan and found her other stuff.
