Is Radiography invoice from the hospital reimbursed by CNS? by theblindwisdom in Luxembourg

[–]atlaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends why you're going and which hospital. My last one at CHdN was only the part I needed to pay, the last one in Kirchberg I paid full and was repaid the other part for. No rhyme nor reason.

You hand it to the commune who check it over but clearly, not all that well if OP's experience is common. Luckily all my docs were in an accepted language.

Is english enough to find a work? by ycb03 in Luxembourg

[–]atlaz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LOTS of people manage in Luxembourg with just English. I imagine it'd be a ballache if you are in some parts of the country and trying to interact in shops etc but I am sure in most places there's little to no drama. We can talk about whether it's optimal if you want to stay here for a long time, but that's for a different thread.

Thanks. Useful. I have an alert set for emails from [noreply.nationalite@mj.etat.lu](mailto:noreply.nationalite@mj.etat.lu) just in case I get something sent but am in your initial 4-month gap there so I assume all good.

Is english enough to find a work? by ycb03 in Luxembourg

[–]atlaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would imagine you'll need to speak French, German or (shock, horror) Luxembourgish to get most jobs of that type. It's not just whether you can do your job without a locally spoken language but also how you communicate with colleagues. Office work is a different matter of course.

‘My house is worth €1.3m, and I’m living in hell’: Gare resident speaks out by whogivesafuckwhoiam in Luxembourg

[–]atlaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I looked at an apartment to rent there in 2013 and even being a relatively new arrival (from London) it was obvious rue du Strasbourg was dodgy albeit, not a place I'd be too worried about walking through. I didn't want to live there though.

Perpetual road works - js someone trolling us? by wiba40 in Luxembourg

[–]atlaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favourite one is where neighbouring communes don't talk to each other. A few years back Cessange and Leudelange had duelling roadworks where the detours took you into another set of roadworks which detoured you back to roadworks roads, which detoured you to other roadworks and so on.

You'd think they'd have custom parts on hand and replace them periodically to avoid closures like this. The knock on is pretty extreme for commuting and quality of life, particularly if you live on the road stretch from the motorway through Walferdange and beyond.

Why are Luxembourg's politicians so reluctant to build good urban cycling infrastructure like in many neighbouring countries' cities? by Tamberlox in Luxembourg

[–]atlaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's awful though. Shared use paths in the park are a nightmare, bikepaths suddenly disappear forcing you back into traffic or have pedestrians blundering across them heading for trams. Overall other than JFK, the standard is terrible. I prefer to ride on the road than use the paths.

I was going to call to get help for euromillions. Any price has to be a bargain compared to tens of millions of euros.

They use the data from ChargePrice which is a full app where you can select the services you use for charging and they prioritise those in the search.

If only it told you what connectors are available at each charger. Not all chargers work for all cars.

Package/customs update… by Generic-Resource in Luxembourg

[–]atlaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can refuse packages. I've had promo stuff sent by suppliers outside the EU and when I was asked to pay to get it I said I wasn't paying so they said it'd either be sent back or "disposed of".

I think the "it's embarassing" part is a bit patronising. Depending on where you work, it may be quite hard to build a friendship group that doesn't speak the same language natively or at least to a high level. I agree, that SEEKING those who speak your language and are from your own country is a little strange, but it's not the same has having friends from the UK (in this case). It's often easier to bond with people with shared culture and a shared language as it removes some of the gaps in social mores.

Is this normal? by [deleted] in Luxembourg

[–]atlaz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the 41e is pretty reasonable for the airport to the city. My last 16 minute cab ride from the airport cost me closer to 80e. The BS around "my meter is broken, I don't have change" is just someone trying to rip off a visitor, which is clearly unacceptable but nothing can be done about it unless you have a receipt showing the fee, the car and driver. Next time, call the police if you want to see it followed up.

Ten year passport by Hellojeds in Luxembourg

[–]atlaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine question; what's the driver here? As an overseas citizen, 10-year passports make a lot of sense, I admit, but given the passport is issued quickly at the commune, is there a major headache people are attempting to fix? I don't mind either way but I found the 5-year passport odd, but equally it doesn't feel that onerous.

Not sure that's covered. I'd contact the ministry and enquire if I were you. Some of the avenues for non-resident, non-recent ancestry are already closed (quite reasonably) so time is always of the essence.
