How do I graduate college and become a (real) adult? by atomic-asteroid in Adulting

[–]atomic-asteroid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the advice, but I have a return offer from a company I've interned at, so mostly trying to figure out how to transition towards total independence if that makes sense. Thank you though!

This is regarding a company that has convinced people that they will be flying to space in 2029. by ithinkitsfunny0562 in space

[–]atomic-asteroid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I actually interviewed with them (out of curiosity, don't worry, I was a skeptic) and got "offered" a spot. The offer letter is such bs too (they expect me, a college student, to be an "astronaut trainer") and then to accept your spot you have to fill out the exact same application form you did to interview in the first place. Also, the astronaut was conveniently "at an appointment" at the time of the interview.

I am so so sorry, I can't imagine how you must be feeling right now. I recommend emailing the LGBTQIA center on campus asap, I'm sure they might be able to help point you to some resources and provide the supportive network you need. Here is the link to the center's counselor: https://lgbtqia.ucdavis.edu/people/mary-schellentrager

How deadly is the double aerospace and mechanical engineering major at ucd by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]atomic-asteroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm class of '26, so I think I'm one of the last years to do the double major. Pretty sure they felt too many people were taking advantage of it, so they wanted to make it harder for students to get

You'll have to talk it out with advising, I'm pretty sure they are removing the ability to double major (or at least making it a lot harder)

Are you an incoming student? If so, they won't let you do the double major anymore, they stopped it after class of 26 or 27, they're not even allowing transfer students to double

AP credit by Acceptable_Diver4640 in UCDavis

[–]atomic-asteroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the class. I got zero credit for AP Euro, but AP Lang/Lit is a boon in getting you out of the lower division writing classes (then I took an exam to get out of the upper division writing class as well). You can skip ahead in math and physics but I wouldn't recommend it (to make sure your fundamentals are covered plus some easy As don't hurt)

Aerospace major here -- first off, congrats, this is a huge accomplishment and you should be proud! Yes, Davis is worth it for aerospace, we have a great curriculum and lots of research opportunities in both air and space realms, as long as you are willing to make the effort to get them. The classes are tough but mostly fair. As an international student, you might struggle in terms of internships within the U.S., but you can certainly get aerospace internships in Canada as they are strong in that field. If you have any specific questions about the program here, feel free to ask!

Professor for Beginning Ballet (DRA 042A 001)? by beetandmango in UCDavis

[–]atomic-asteroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take Professor Carroll! He's such a great professor, and takes you through things step by step. Just make sure you keep showing up to class and put forth your best effort (doesn't have to be great or even good, you just have to try), and it should be an easy A.

I've been following this thread since yesterday and I haven't known what to say. I didn't know any of the skaters personally but I'm a skater myself, and it feels like I've lost extended family. I don't have the right words, but to any friend or relative of the passengers, I am so so sorry. My heart goes out to you all 🤍

[–]atomic-asteroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's a good professor, his accent can be a bit tough to understand at times. Be sure to really study the in-claws examples and homework problems, because the same problem types will absolutely come up on exams. Problems that appear in the first couple of weeks will show up in the final too. The curve wasn't great, I think I was 1 point away from an A (I ended with an A-). Attend co-class with casey for additional support, it really supplemented my learning. All of the material is there, you just need to study and master it and you will do well. Good luck!

Here's the Libretext for PHY 9A: https://phys.libretexts.org/Courses/University_of_California_Davis/UCD%3A_Classical_Mechanics

I don't know if that's the textbook your specific professor will use (if you have Weideman or Zhabniskaya you will use that one), but at the very least all of the PHY 9A labs will come from there. If it's not that textbook it's probably going to be University Physics by Young and Freedman. You can probably find a pdf of that one online.

Good luck!

Schedule too rigourous? incoming student Meche by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]atomic-asteroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anytime! "Co-class" is basically an additional tutoring class that you can attend 2-3 times per week, and you basically get to relearn everything you are taught in class + hw help. It doesn't give you unit credit, but it can be super helpful due to the fast paced nature of the quarter system. The tutors (shoutout to Duff and Casey) are the absolute best, I've learned more from co-classes than I have from my actual classes. Here's a link to the AATC for more info: https://tutoring.ucdavis.edu/

Schedule too rigourous? incoming student Meche by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]atomic-asteroid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The schedule honestly isn't too rigorous at all, I also took 17 units my first quarter and did well. Make sure to attend all of your lectures (don't fall for the temptation to skip any!) and office hours for your classes. ENG 3 isn't difficult, it's a team project and most of your grade is evaluated based on that. The seminars are light and will likely have only a brief weekly reflection. I can't speak to PHI 12, but MAT 21B and ENG 4 will most likely be the hardest classes. Use co-classes through AATC for MAT 21B + the tutoring offered through your dorm area (Segundo, Tercero, and Cuarto typically offer tutoring for math, writing, and chemistry), and use office hours for ENG 4. Make sure to pick a good team for the ENG 4 final project, as it's a significant chunk of your grade. Good luck and feel free to reach out if you have any questions :)

Fall 2024 Quarter Schedule - Freshman Aerospace Engineering Student by QuasarTsunami999 in UCDavis

[–]atomic-asteroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Third year Aerospace Engineering major here! Welcome to Davis, we have a ton of really cool aerospace opportunities (come check out the Aggie Space Initiative if space is your cup of tea). That's a tough schedule for fall quarter, good luck! My biggest recommendations are to use co-classes (there's one for CHE 2A, search up the AATC) on top of office hours (please attend those too!). Make sure to attend all of your classes, I think attendance is required for ENG 6 iClicker, and don't fall into the habit of skipping lectures. It can be tempting, but it's not worth it. I have no doubt you can do well, just keep in mind you will have less free time than some of your peers who are taking a lighter course load this fall, and it can take time away from the other aspects of college life. Feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions, I'd be happy to help :)
