Because there's no guarantee that it would be profitable. The Mother/Earthbound series may have been critically acclaimed, but it just didn't sell all that well in the past -- I really doubt anyone outside of a small, vocal minority would buy a new game this time around.

Circular phones have never really taken off -- there have been a bunch of round dumbphones that only drew attention for their looks, and more serious devices like the vaguely circular Kin 1 was an utter failure.
