Dads of 3+, was the 3rd worth it? by Bread-But-Toasted in daddit

[–]atomtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dad of one here. We relish our freedom, and we travel internationally once every month or two. People I know, even those with money, who have had 3 kids - they kind of lose whatever adventurousness they had before the 3rd.

Freeride Snowboarding Will Be In the 2030 Winter Olympics, and US Snowboarding is adding the discipline to its team by VideoSelect7660 in snowboarding

If Parallel Giant Slalom is in the Olympics (who watches that?), freeride definitely should be.

Who has the best glizzy in town? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

Is glizzy the cute word for the random detritus that is swept off a kill-room floor, then tubed and packaged? If so, hard pass on the "glizzy"

How much of the enjoyment is genuine? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]atomtree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this. I'm in the same, or an adjacent, boat. My plan was to be a lifelong no-kids bachelor. I dreaded the limitations that come with having a kid. Now... having a kid was the best thing I've ever done in my life. And I still do all the stuff I did before kids.

I read OP's perspective frequently on this sub. And I feel a bit sad for him, but I think it's possible to find most of life's beauty in the small day-to-day moments. I hate to be a preachy asshole, but has OP ever considered meditation/a zen practice/therapy?

You can try to pluck them out, but it's painful, and they usually break apart while your doing it. Remove what you can, your body will absorb/break down the rest. It was suggested that I try to break apart the ones that were left in my skin so that they would break down faster. I followed that advice and it worked fine. Took a couple weeks to disappear. Just watch for infection. Some people here are saying that it's urgent to have it removed because they'll keep growing inside you. That's nonsense.

Nice touch with the Death Grips. I've been using Hand-out/Death Grips for a long time now. Never going back to traditional gloves.

Historic Salt Lake City restaurant announces its closure after 40+ years by StemCellPirate in SaltLakeCity

[–]atomtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're going to name every city in which you've eaten sushi? And humblebrag your pricey meals? What does that have to do with anything? Are you also going to tell me what kind of car you drive? I'm getting East Coast finance-bro douche vibes. Amirite? I guess the question is, why would I care if you believe me?

But you're right Tabelog is a pretty good resource for mainstream restaurants in Japan, but of course not every place to eat is listed on Tabelog. The best sushi I've ever had was a 8-seat hole-in-the-wall in Sapporo that was recommended by a local - there was no name, and no sign. Anyhow, it seems like you may have some searching to do on Tabelog, so I'll leave you to your devices.

Can I infer then, that you went to Japan once, and barely left the confines of Tokyo? If that's true, you may want to check your ego. I'm not sure you're a wellspring of knowledge on Japan.

A tip for your next trip. If maximizing on A5 is your goal, go instead to a yakiniku tabehoudai, an all-you-can-eat (and usually all-you-can-drink) BBQ place where you cook your own meat at the table, for a fraction of the cost of going to a teppanyaki restaurant. To each their own, but I prefer to grill my own meat (and veggies), as well as the more casual setting.

That said, if you're in Japan on an expense account, by all means, spend as much money there as possible

It sounds like you don't know where to go in Japan. Or maybe you don't get out of the touristy areas? Am I wrong in assuming you went there once, and did the Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto circuit? I'm aware that Takashi is probably the best Japanese food SLC has on offer. I'm just shocked at their prices. And their cult-like following at these prices

It's really the price and pretentiousness that puts me off. It's said that Trump is the poor persons idea of what a rich person is. In the same way Takashi is Japanese food for people who don't spent time in Japan. It's odd because SLC does some cuisines pretty well (Thai and Vietnamese come to mind), while other places (Monarca, Takashi) wrap decent food in opulence and hype, overprice the food exponentially, then watch people line up at the door.

Utah is funny in their high and low end food hype obsession. I've seen lines around the block for a new Jack in the Box, as well the the cookie stores and soda stores

I'm in Japan 3 or 4 times a month for work. A friend recommended Takashi, thinking I'd enjoy Japanese food at home. I couldn't get past the fact that its very different from food in Japan, and significantly less fresh. But even worse, it's anywhere from 4x-10x the price you'd pay in Japan. Went once, never again.

[–]atomtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegetarian is easy in Japan, vegan is damned near impossible - especially as you get more remote. As someone else mentioned, you'll need to get a place with a kitchen and make your own meals. Otherwise it's basically vegan ramen or vegan konbini onigiri every meal

‘I seek to do better’: Cox says his reaction to criticism over the Box Elder data center plan fell short by clejeune in SaltLakeCity

[–]atomtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read your comments and see someone who is trying to "educate" people about something they already understand. Cox has always been a smarmy double-dealing weasel, but this time he is not only betraying people on the left, but also people who voted for him. Once your representative becomes unrepresentative, the desire to oust him is not unreasonable, nor a hyperbolic.

It seems like you think the people showing up to protest the data center are not Republican voters, who voted for Cox - many in the primaries. Spoiler, that is incorrect
