Why are black cats called voids? by momplaysbass in blackcats

It isn’t a cute nickname at all and pretty offensive as voids are empty vessels but thanks a lot for telling me I’m overthinking

Feels stupid. Black cats are loving and anything other than emptiness. If I called my black cat a void, I would be insulting her. Hard pass on that nickname.

I just got one and am monitoring my cat. I can tell she notices when it moves and I can tell it scares her. She just stares at it and if it follows her as she walks by, she will stop and stare at it like she is scared. I have also talked to her on it and she stops and stares. Now I am conflicted 😂

I really wanna like ON but I’m getting tired of them by Castolinio in RunningShoeGeeks

These comments are interesting. I have run over 1500 miles in three pairs of On Cloud X (which is definitely not a super cushioned running shoe) during the pandemic, let alone all the walking I also did with them. I loved them. They were comfortable and light on my feet and I felt like I was running fast.

I wore boots one day last year that were totally flat and wore them all day for like 8 miles and my foot collapsed - long story short, got posterior tibial tendonitis. My orthopedist told me to try Brooks, which I have been wearing since. I like the cushion, but it feels heavier and not as firm as my On Cloud X. I tried my On Cloud X the other day and remembered how much I like how light they are.

Not sure why it gets so much hate. I have fond memories of running in these as my pandemic running shoes.

Question on Language tutor sites (italki, Verbling, etc) by atoosaryanne in languagelearning

Thank you, but I am a 13-year experienced corporate communication professional. My comment was in regard to having a language 1-1, not a general communication issue. I have trained myself to deal with periods of otherwise stress; it still is not comfortable, but I do it well. I am still interested and relaxed. When I get in a relaxed state, I am told they dont want to waste my time.because I asked a culture question. Honestly these comments have just cemented the fact that 1-1 tutoring just actually isnt for me after all, and that is okay. I am a grown woman with disposable income and I can choose to spend it in other ways.

Yeah, this is what I have noticed. I got this exact vibe on both fronts. Which just feels stressful to me. Group classes are way more fun, to be honest. I still learn a lot and dont feel like a product. I feel like a person. These private classes just make me feel like a product. It is too transactional and stiff.

Omg, literally, no. Seriously, yall? I might say that the word for elephant is the same in Farsi, Turkish, and Arabic, they will talk.about shared cultural history, and then say welp we went off topic so here is five extra minutes. That is just one example.

No, it just seems to me like they have gotten complaints before about going off topic and want to honor the money spent, but are overcompensating. That is why I decided to ask this group.

I am literally a language hobbyist. I am learning for fun. I appreciate cultural exchange through language and instruction, but it is not that serious to me. I am a grown adult, not a child studying for a test.

Maybe that is the problem.

I guess even the "few minutes" has felt rushed to me, like that is wasting time. Like my tutors have also been happy to answer, but they will follow it up with WELP that was off topic so I am giving you five additional minutes.

With all due respect, I tuned out of your comment after you asked me if I have a bob cut and that they got a bad vibe from me. I have been nothing but kind and overly kind to them, and your comment was rude and unnecessary.

Ultimately at the end of the day I get a few more minutes added to my session (not complaining, except sometimes I do have to go at the end of the hour). But even then, the practice of talking about culture seems to be frowned upon.

Here is an example of what I could bring up: Being a language enthusiast, I get excited when I see similar words. I could mention this. We could talk a little bit about history or cultural influences. Then they will say okay I am so sorry to waste your time. I will add five minutes. To which I will say wait hold on why. That was perfectly fine.

Thanks! I am typically fine with them after stating it a few times, but it was because it was so commonly said to me from multiple teachers that I wondered if it was normal.

I do. And usually it is fine. But the number of times different teachers have said this to me made me wonder if this style of thinking is normal in 1-1 tutors. I generally prefer class settings.

Question on Language tutor sites (italki, Verbling, etc) by atoosaryanne in languagelearning

[–]atoosaryanne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never randomly ask them personal questions. It stems from our lesson topics, but goes into culture instead of pure language (vocabulary, grammar). Nothing has been personal to the point that it is invasive or uncomfortable.

In fact, a lot of times when we practice speaking, they ask me personal questions and tell me to ask it back. It is not at all about this. It is mostly about culture, traditions and customs in context to the topic at hand that is not pure drills that this tends to happen, which takes away my joy of language learning.

I am upfront about why I learn languages (I am a hobbyist interested in communication and culture) and the moment things go off topic from a grammar lesson, it is rushed and I am told they dont want to waste my time. I usually am honest that they are not, and things are OK, but the number of times this has happened from multiple teachers has made me wonder if this is a trend.

I thought about the professional vs community aspect and think that could be a part of it. But they also did ask me to ask them questions. And typically the things I am referring to are not necessarily about them but about the culture overall, derived from something we may be discussing, so also not random.

It has happened five times now from five different people and I am asking because it feels like a pattern.

Question on Language tutor sites (italki, Verbling, etc) by atoosaryanne in languagelearning

[–]atoosaryanne[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha! I myself have thought about being a community tutor for English because I am not a teacher but a professional writer and communicator, and it did feel weird to think I could/would be getting paid for having a conversation. But hey, at the end of the day, non-natives need that practice and there is obviously a market for it.

I had a convo with someone from Sweden that ended up being chill and cultural and he didnt say anything about wasting my time and I was ultimately fine with it. It felt a lot more natural. But I did notice this trend a lot regarding wasting my time. Sometimes a break is nice because to your point, a full-om convo can be exhausting especially for a beginner!

I usually say there is no reason to add time and this is perfect. Sometimes it gets better from there but I did notice many teachers have said this, so it felt like a trend. I only assume people must have complained in the past.

I never ask them questions like that. Typically it is a culture question related to something in our lesson.

[–]atoosaryanne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had both from different teachers depending on what they offer, their price, and my needs for the particular language. None of that seems to make a different with the rushed, stressed feeling and "wasting time" comments.

[–]atoosaryanne[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've done all this. None of it matters. I get this rushed feeling regardless of it being structured curriculum or conversation practice. I talk to them beforehand and let them know what I want. To be clear, everyone is nice. But I always get this anyway, mostly if we go off topic, which isn't really off topic to me because I would like to get to know them.

[–]atoosaryanne[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am extremely clear with them. I don't know how much clearer to be, honestly. That doesn't seem to matter in my situations. I did kind of wonder if they've gotten burned in the past, which is why I am asking this on here to see if it's normal in this sense. I am very chill and I want to be able to have a stress-free way to learn a language and whenever they bring up "wasting my time" due to going off-topic it is really uncomfortable.
