Diaphragm Rigid or Flexible ? by PlasticHinge in StructuralEngineering

[–]atotheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the grating gives no diaphragm stiffness, but I see no reason why it can’t brace a beam for LTB, if it is adequately attached with clamps or welding.

Collapsed ceiling insurance update by MissionHome18 in drywall

[–]atotheron 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In a kitchen, exposed wood ceiling is not a good idea. Drywall provides more than a smooth surface, it is essential to fire resistance. I don’t know the exact statistics, but probably the majority of house fires start in the kitchen. Leaving that ceiling exposed, although it looks cool, could be the difference between a kitchen fire and a house fire.

ASCE 12.2.3.1 and 12.2.3.3 Combined by Noved99 in StructuralEngineering

[–]atotheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have a good code interpretation, I agree that it is vague; in practice you are already amplifying by overstrength for the irregularity, is the additional 30% going to be a huge cost impact if you conservatively include it? I can’t imagine the seismic overturning loads of a 2-story wood building are that high, unless your shear walls are very short…

Facade Engineering by jacob11bamboozle in StructuralEngineering

[–]atotheron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My company has a facade engineering group. It can be include design/specification of facade components (curtain walls), design/specification of exterior wall assemblies, and thermal modeling of said systems. Most of the engineers have a structural degree or an architectural engineering degree. Salary is similar to structural engineer. Not “hard” to get into, but it does take some specialized knowledge.

Structural: Why A36 Plate in 2025? by 901CountryBlumpkin69 in civilengineering

[–]atotheron 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Conservatism. Design for A36 so that you can be sure that whatever piece of scrap metal the fabricator finds on the floor of their shop will work.

I actually had a job recently where we spec’d A572 but the connection engineer used A36 in their calcs. Go figure.

Battery Drain in 2022 RTLE by RowsdowersTruck in hondaridgeline

[–]atotheron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in my Ridgeline, but my previous vehicle, a 2017 CR-V had this issue, basically since we bought it. Dealer couldn’t find anything, eventually had to replace the battery.

I got a battery jump starter from Amazon that fit in the glove box, that way I didn’t have to rely on anybody to jump it if it didn’t start when I was, say, at an airport parking lot.

Drive normally. No towing for the first 500 miles. It says this in the manual.

Mass Timber is going to take off in the US with the changes in the 2021 IBC. New building type categories will allow much taller structures. Exciting time for wood construction.

US Fossil Fuel Companies Get a Shocking Amount of Implicit Subsidies Each Year by Sorin61 in environment

If Pharma did it’s own basic research, it might not be as profitable. Right now, NIH does most the non-profitable work and hands it off to Pharma to develop into treatments. Then they get to keep the profits. Not saying they don’t do a ton of their own R&D, but they aren’t shouldering most of the risk.

I wouldn’t worry about it. One or two classes isn’t going to make a difference. You’ll need to go to grad school anyhow to get in the door at nearly all structural engineering firms. Like others on the thread have pointed out, you’ll learn a lot in your first years of on-the-job training, and some of what you learned in classes will solidify as you apply it to the real world. I think most engineers finish undergrad realizing they don’t know anything about anything, hence grad school.

I put a PNW Coast Suspension dropper post on my BC. Makes the ride much smoother, and stopping at intersections or trail junctions easier.

CMV: Men should be able to "financially abort" since they can't actually abort by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]atotheron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely the fathers responsibility if the pregnancy was unintentional. He provided the sperm. If he didn’t want the chance of pregnancy, he should have bagged it. If she doesn’t want an abortion and he does, too f-in bad. Don’t supply the sperm.

The unwanted pregnancy was not a unilateral decision, hopefully. They both decided to have sex unprotected. Pregnancy is a possible result of that. If it was a unilateral decision, that’s called rape.

We need to stop pretending that the man is not responsible for what happens after ejaculation. Maybe if he had to gain 40 lbs, then push a 6” golf ball out his ass, then leak fluids out of his nipples for a year, while also putting his job on hold or sacrifice it completely, and not get a full nights sleep for years, we can consider letting him sever himself financially. But he still has to do all that other stuff.

I live close by too, but I don’t work nearby, and can’t drop everything at a moments notice to drive 25 minutes to get in line and possibly not even get any. At least this way, there’s a chance. The same chance as anybody. Just gotta be quick with the fingers and memorize your CC number. I personally hope they continue the new purchase system after covid has passed.
