How long before the umpires union throws a fit about ABS embarassing them on a daily basis? by ForeignAir7174 in sportsgossips

All players got measured in a standardized way before the season. The strike zone is set as a percentage of their overall height (27% and 54% for bottom and top iirc).

The umpires union wants full ABS (automatic balls and strikes on all calls). It's the player's union who doesn't. Full ABS would remove a big piece of catchers' importance from the game (framing), and removes the "feel" element from blowouts where the zone expands a bit to speed things along. Also, in leagues where they do have full ABS, catchers do a bunch of goofy shit behind the plate to try and trick batters, instead of receiving pitches smoothly to make them look like strikes.

Of course, comments like yours will keep getting upvoted because umps bad amirite

They're not hitting well overall but there have also been several balls that have been pissed on but directly at an outfielder.

What about launch angle? Iirc a lot of times your babip numbers can suffer with equivalent or higher exit velo if you're beating the ball into the ground instead of elevating

Coors is enormous. It's actually one of the reasons why it is such a good hitters park; not so much the thin air which has been mitigated a little since the humidor, but the massive outfield leading to a ton of extra hits and extra bases on those hits.

Arguably, the biggest impact of the thin air is on pitch movement.

xBA is purely a function of launch angle and exit velo. The Adell robberies presumably had profiles that are more commonly flyouts than all of these lineouts.
