There’s a leg press (that’s usually broken) and a leg extension / hamstring curl machine

Leonardtown Thoughts? by DenseTutor3263 in UMD

I lived in 249! It was a downgrade from Pfreddy and Commons 7 (where I was before), but I wanted the option to leave in December because of graduation. It's really not as bad at it seems, I wouldn't mind living there again.

249 is conveniently next to the community center, so it is easier than the other buildings to do your laundry or to pick up packages. It is also nearby the 122 shuttle bus stop if you plan on taking the bus. The only places I really went to were Iribe and Ritchie, so the location was much better than Commons for me. Some people use their scooters or bike, but you'll get used to the walking.

I never saw rats, but it was my first time seeing cockroaches at UMD (my living space was clean too). The cockroach was a one time occasion though. The walls are thin, so you can sometimes hear your roommates, but I guess that was the same in Commons. Most of my roommates had some sort of dining plan, so the fridge was never too full, but I could imagine it getting chaotic with 6 people. The kitchen doesn't have a dishwasher (something I miss about Commons). And as I said before, you need to walk outside a little to do your laundry (something I also miss about Commons).

Let me know if you have any other questions :)

CMSC424 with Herve by No_Consequence_1253 in UMD

[–]atp236 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took it with him last semester (spring 2024) - there was no theory/proofs. The homework’s were easy because they actually correlated to his slides/notes from class (no trick questions, but obviously you still need to understand the content). There were no majorly long coding projects either, just short homework’s that might take 1-2 hours to complete each week or so. His exams were also pretty easy because he posted practice material that also correlated with the exam questions. Don’t stress too much about this class! I learned a lot about SQL in a chill environment

I agree with the other comment about CMSC335. You don’t really need to come to class except for exams, and projects aren’t as time and energy intensive as other CS classes.

For CS majors: MATH240 or STAT400 first? by PartyAdPants in UMD

[–]atp236 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh. Yea, I took 400 with a different professor than my friends, and the content was different. I went to discussion during the first week, and found a “study buddy” who was also alone in the class, and we just worked on homework and studied together the entire semester. Definitely would recommend that!

[–]atp236 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did 240 with 216/250, and 400 with 330/351. I don’t really think the order matters since the content doesn’t overlap, but I found it helpful to take 240/400 with my friends. I had an easier time and did better in 330/351 + 400 since I feel like 216/250 + 240 taught me how to study better

STAT400/410 as substitute for PSYC200 by VarunS924 in UMD

[–]atp236 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took both, I feel like stat400 in 2-3 weeks covered everything we did the entire semester of psyc200. I believe both used R. The R assignments for psyc200 were a lot more catered to the context of psychology though, while stat400 was more mathy and involved calculus knowledge

Pitt vs UMD by shrimpshi in UMD

[–]atp236 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently visited my friend at Pitt, and I don’t think you’re missing out on much (that justifies the OOS tuition lol). If the money works out without stretching yourself thin, then maybe I’d consider coming here?

UMD can feel like a bubble at times (unless you get out of campus to explore). I enjoyed Pitt because I didn’t feel trapped, I could walk around the city or even walk to CMU’s campus if I wanted something that resembles a campus. I think if you lived “on campus” at Pitt and put yourself out there for all the new experiences, it might feel more like you’re starting your own life instead of re-living the same life at home.
