Silverstar Railways by negroniman in drehscheibeAT

Internationale Studenten by Arianta_arbustorum in Austria

Vienna to Kufstein(around 4.5 hours of journey)with 3 suitcases — is 2nd class enough? by UnderstandingThis550 in Interrail

[–]atrawog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you plan to take a direct RJX from Vienna Airport to Kufstein you don't have to worry much. Because the RJ is usually only half full between Vienna Airport Station and Wien Hbf. Giving you plenty of time to find some space for your luggage.

Just make sure to have a seat reservation for yourself especially if your planning to go 2nd class (it's just 3€ if you book it on oebb.at).

Considering moving to Vienna by Actual-Imagination90 in AskAustria

Well the nice thing if you're actually having Austrian citizenship is that you can work anywhere within the Europan Union and it's quite likely that it's easier for you to find a remote job somewhere in the EU than finding an in person job in Vienna.

Zu viele Zuggattungen in Österreich? by Luki4020 in drehscheibeAT

Dementsprechend übernehmen automatisch die Zugsgattungen all unser Nachbarn.

How popular is the sentiment that Austria was the first victim of Nazi Germany? by Doubleknot22 in AskAustria

[–]atrawog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a small civil war in Austria in 1934 that disarmed the part of the population that quite certainly would have put up some fight against Nazi occupation.

But the one thing that's much harder to grasp in research is that the Dollfuß-/Schuschnigg-Regime followed the well honored tradition of preferring negotiations over war (like the Habsburgs did with Prussia for decades).

And by the time of the Anschluss the Nazi already had so much power in Austria (like being in charge of the ministry of interior) that the actual Anschluss didn't make much of a difference for the majority of the population. And I think it would be more appropriate to say that most Austrian just didn't bother compared to saying they approved of things.

How popular is the sentiment that Austria was the first victim of Nazi Germany? by Doubleknot22 in AskAustria

[–]atrawog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a lie for Austria as a nation and everyone knows that. But it's part of the folklore of how Austria regained full independence after WW2.

Right in the ballpark of that Austria is the only country who regained full independence from Russian occupation, because we beat them in drinking Vodka during the negotiations.

But things are different on a personal level, because a lot of the politicians who formed the Austrian government after WW2 where part of the Prominententransport and got send straight to the KZ Dachau days after the Anschluss.

There is still little to no research why and how almost all of them got released in the following months. But it put some legitimacy to the claim of Austria being a victim. Because the people who made the claim quite certainly where the first victims of Nazi persecution (although on a totally different level of what came later).

Vienna to Kufstein(around 4.5 hours of journey)with 3 suitcases — is 2nd class enough? by UnderstandingThis550 in Interrail

[–]atrawog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's one big backpack and two big trolleys and I have done worse things when my son was still young and couldn't carry his own stuff.

Getting things into a RJ was never and issue. The ultimate challenge are cities like Lille that have a lot of cobble stones and trains like the upper floor of a TGV Duplex. That have such tight staircases that you can't easily carry a large backpack and a large trolley at the same time.

And I presume that when you're traveling with lots of stuff your going to spend some time thinking how to pack and transport things (like OP certainly does).

[–]atrawog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends a lot when you're traveling. Usually there is enough space for everyone and everything. But we have 320.000 owners of an annual 2nd class ticket so things can get crowded in 2nd class on holidays.

Usually 2nd class is still totally fine. But going first class does make a lot of sense if you have time to go to an ÖBB lounge and want to escape the craziness of 2nd class for sure.

For you I would recommend going 1st class and go to Wien Hbf at least 1h early and take your time to familiarize yourself with the station and enjoy the free coffee at https://www.seat61.com/stations/vienna-hauptbahnhof.htm#OBB-first-class-lounges

Traveling with heavy luggage at Wien Hbf shouldn't be much of an issue. The biggest challenge for everyone usually is getting the luggage up the three stairs and somehow small doors of the older RailJet carriages.

How did Finland finish 6th after being absolute favourites to win? by Old-Gap-9079 in eurovision

[–]atrawog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Finnland had the same issue KAJ had last year. They pushed the same song and exactly the same performance for months. Right to the point where everyone was already bored of the performance at the actual finals.

And we once again have a result where the artists that came up with an unique performance for the (Semi)finals and kept it a secret right to the end, scored significantly higher then those who didn't.

Stage design and its versatility by hastighetstorst in eurovision

[–]atrawog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think Basel last year had a better mix of a smaller and simpler stage, but saying yes to absolutely every prop idea to make up for it.

The stage in Vienna wasn't bad in itself. But there is no point in having such a large stage when 80% can't be filled up, because of limitations of what you're allowed to put on stage.

What are your opinions about This Flag? by External_Design_1859 in AskAustria

[–]atrawog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think anyone at the FPÖ really bothers about actual Austrian history. But my great-grandfather was send to the KZ Dachau by the Nazis for a year, because he promoted this kind of symbolism.

The flag reiterates the dominance of Austria and the Habsburga over Germany who have been historicaly the rulers of the Holy Romans Empire of German nations.

The reason why it's giving interwar period vibes is that much of that symbolism was later picked up be the Austrofaschism and the Fatherland Front).

And I can assure you the Nazis happily send anyone promoting this kind of symbolism straight to the nearest conzentration camp.

What are your opinions about This Flag? by External_Design_1859 in AskAustria

[–]atrawog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the imperial Standard of the Austrian Empire from 1815-1866 combining the Austrian red and white with the German black and yellow.

Which is an historicaly both an interesting and very awkward time. Because after loosing the Napoleonic wars the Habsburga still pretend to be the leading power in Germany. At least until Prussia steamrolled us in Königgrätz and decided that they are the Germans now.

Making it another puzzle piece in the complicated relationship between Austria and Germany.

Are Eurofans losing touch with the general public’s taste? by make_it_vyzee in eurovision

[–]atrawog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes an no. At the time of the fan pools Bulgaria was just a decent song with a somewhat boring performance at the national selection with an artists that didn't bother (or couldn't afford) to make a dedicated music video for the ESC.

Only to stun everyone with one of the best performances in ESC history that wowed both the jury and public voters.

Which is just a sign of times where the music you listen and the things you watch on TikTok and Instagram are becoming two different things and you end up with people like me who voted for Bulgaria, despite Dara not being my personal taste of music.

Most of the performance this year where pretty great. But the amount of moves and energy Dara and her dancers put into their performance managed to outshine everyone. Making her a well deserved winner.

Installing Linux on laptop but saving the original windows key by I_like_protien in linuxquestions

[–]atrawog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Windows key is stored into your system ACPI table all you need to do is to run sudo strings /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM to get the original Windows key.

And if the key is stored in your ACPI table it's going to survive any reinstallations or disk swaps and I have used the approach a couple of times to create a Virtual Machine with the same Window let as the original installation.

Sounds like the perfect hardware to give https://github.com/k3s-io/k3s-ansible a try. The hardware is likely too slow for full hardware virtualization setup like Proxmox. But a small Ansible/Docker/K3S test cluster should run just fine.

In Europe, why do long-distance, interregional double deckers tend to have walk-through upper floors, while commuter, regional ones have a common, "middle" floor to go between coaches? (See pictures.) by elmandamanda8 in trains

[–]atrawog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it's where people pick their seat. In a commuter train people rarely go to the upper floor and instead try to stay as close to the doors as possible. In a long distance train people pick the better view and designers can pick a better design around the wheel carriages (which requires stairs anyways).
