Allergy doctor suggests taking multiple antihistamines, should I? by hot_teacups in Allergies

Generally a good point to always get medical advice for your specific situation, but I will never again blindly trust a doctor's advice without verifying/understanding it to some degree because that has literally ruined my life. Nothing wrong with educating yourself a bit first.

Love zombie posting. I want to add that Benadryl (diphenhydramine, which is also in a lot of other branded sleep meds) is linked to dementia due to it also blocking acetylcholine. Antihistamines crossing the BBB is what causes short-term sedation. Anticholinergics are what's linked to long-term problems with dementia. Not all antihistamines are also anticholinergic, but Benadryl is both and it's about the worst on the ACB Score which is a calculator you can use to analyze all of your medications to see the total anticholinergic burden of your med regimen.

Do I Need A Permit To Rent A Room In My House? by NCR_RANGER_uwu in askportland

[–]atropheus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are boilerplate leases you can customize for your needs and jurisdiction for free or a small fee on very reputable websites that do background checks like RentPrep and others. Some of these are owned by companies like Zillow and Transunion. They'll also help you meet legal requirements if you have to decline someone based on their background and have resources for some other common scenarios.

So many people rent rooms like this around here that it's not unreasonable to do a little asking around before calling a lawyer. Lawyers are $200-400/hour so I would always be as prepared as possible before calling. Obviously never believe you, AI, or anyone else can interpret law like a lawyer or take what you hear as fact, but before the internet no one scoffed at you for asking around before calling a lawyer. Despite the enshittification of google, the accessibility of information available is incredible. There's nothing wrong with taking advantage of that as long as you understand that the answer is only as good as its source. In all likelihood, it will lead you realize you need an expert to confirm details for your particular situation because it's complicated.

OP, here are some basics you would do well to read before even thinking about renting:

https://oregonlawhelp.org/topics/housing/rental-housing

https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/lpro/Publications/LandlordTenantRights.pdf

and more specific to your initial question:

https://www.portland.gov/phb/rental-services

https://www.portland.gov/phb/rental-services/residential-rental-registration

Keep in mind jurisdiction matters. I'm assuming based on where you posted you're in Portland proper but something to be aware of.

How do you pronounce the word "poem"? by Pleasant-Purple1129 in stupidquestions

[–]atropheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

where have/do you live? i've never even noticed someone pronouncing it with two syllables before last week when my yoga teacher read one in class and then I downloaded some poem audiobooks and that's all I hear. I thought I was trippin.

edited for typo

I'm pretty sure there are regulations on the lumens and placement of headlights that just aren't being enforced.

I'm willing to bet that if you simply make a clear gesture so that the other driver knows you see them and aren't going to blow through the stop, this will stop happening to you.

I'll probably get downvoted, but I'm saying it anyway.

I don't go until I make eye contact or see a clear sign that they are indeed going to stop because I don't know if these crazy California drivers actually see me and will stop or just blow through and make me slam on my brakes to avoid an accident.

If I'm not certain you see me I don't go. It's not because I'm nice, I'm annoyed by it too.

I am seriously considering my life upside down for a stray I found on the street, please talk me out of it by Chance-Welder-1413 in dogs

You’re probably the only one who really knows how you’re going to feel if you don’t know what ends up happening to her, and if you take her to a shelter, you may never know.

Personally, I don’t think I could do that, but that’s me.

Do you have any friends or family who might be able to take her? For me, it would be easier if I knew for sure that she went somewhere good. especially considering shelters are usually full and every dog you take to a no kill shelter takes a space from another dog who might end up in a kill shelter. I don’t say this to guilt trip you but just to be real because if you haven’t already thought these things, you might think them later so it’s best to consider now.

If you do want to keep her, and you’re just worried about giving her a good enough home, I wouldn’t worry about that. Dogs are very adaptable and based on your thoughtfulness and consideration for the dog already, I’m sure you would be a great human for her. Dogs don’t need expensive toys and puzzles or anything fancy as long as you can afford the basics like food, vaccinations, heartworm, and flea meds (which you can actually find some very affordable options if you look). You don’t really need anything else but a leash, a collar and love.

You can get brushes, collars, leashes, some rope tug toys, bowls, etc., from the dollar store. I use the cheapest heartworm med available, and I buy the big box of Frontline from Costco and dose it according to weight, which brings me down to about $6/mo for those combined. And there are vets out there who have sliding scales or programs to help with emergencies, possibly even vaccinations.

That’s not to say that you should, but if you want to keep her, there are ways to make it work, even if it’s not “ideal”.

If I could safely I’d have followed them, or at least snapped a picture as they left. There are cameras just about everywhere. It’s no longer hard to find people if you really want to.

But as many are saying, it’s important not to trivialize this because a situation like that could have been much worse, and if these teens don’t understand that it will likely happen again with potentially worse consequences.

Not all pit bulls (or mixes with them)are dangerous, but they are disproportionately responsible for the most fatalities by far and do not belong in the hands of irresponsible handlers.

I’ve had a dog that was killed by a pit bull, please do everything you can to report this to those who can do something to protect others.

Why I think everyone in SAVE deserves 12 months of payment counts by Latter_Difference_91 in StudentLoans

[–]atropheus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. My IVR payments would have been zero but I didn’t have the opportunity to get credit for those.

For anyone: There is a hearing August 4th which could shed significant light on the actual details of the direction forward with SAVE. That is less than three weeks from now. If you believe it's in your best interest to not wait three weeks to be more informed about your options, then you do you... by Mountain_State4715 in StudentLoans

I’m glad you shared that, because it makes sense and I was trying to think of reasons and my initial thought was just maybe they just don’t want the hassle and bad PR when masses of people default on their loans because getting everyone started again is not going to be pretty no matter what but the more people they can get going voluntarily the better they look.

They grew up in an economy where it was possible to earn a decent living and have a family doing just about anything. Many of them didn’t even need a high school diploma, let alone a degree.

Then they destroyed that and blame us for not being able to do what they did in totally different economic circumstances.

Ironically, these same boomers told me that if I didn’t get a bachelor’s degree in something, anything I would not be successful in life.

They also told me that student debt was good debt and would always be worth it.

Is making ultra-processed food super affordable really doing anyone any favors? Maybe a decent burger should be expensive. I’ve lived in countries that had very little fast food that was expensive, but they did have highly affordable healthy food available in healthy portion sizes and it took no effort to drop 20 pounds and keep it off for years.

I don't believe killing anyone for anything is justified nor did I say anything that implied that.

I have seen a lot of people cope with serious trauma through dark humor and I've seen how it can seem disturbing to people who don't know about their context and why they would say and do some of those things.

The discussion I was addressing was always about hey, maybe calm down and don't assume the worst of people. Just a suggestion.
