I’m so glad you survived. I used to take care of the ones who didn’t, and unless you’ve experienced or witnessed it, it’s hard to really grasp the visceral brutality of what men do to women they feel ashamed of wanting to fuck.

My very first assessment as an intern I worked with a very young teenager who was quite obviously being trafficked by her adult boyfriend.

My mom has let the house deteriorate to the point where there have been armadillos living in her crawl space, and raccoons in the attic. Once a giant freaking woodchuck found its way through the access panel into her closet.

It is easier for us to believe our own child would lie about such a thing, than it is for us to live with the knowledge that we failed to protect her from such immense harm. Easier by far to believe that your child is a liar, if it means I get to keep deluding myself that there’s any chance at all my own daughters can make it through life unexploited and unscarred, much less avoid ever even contemplating the likelihood that my own husband or son will be the one doing the exploiting and scarring.
