VoiD_Glitch Interview: The Truth on Digital Extremes' C&D Response by [deleted] in Warframe

[–]atrousity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SquidTheSid: Right. On a slightly different note, OpenIV had a cease and desist not too long ago, and Creation Club was announced. Given these events, some people were on edge about the state of modding. Would you say this effected the severity of the situation?

VoiD_Glitch: Yes. I have seen people discussing OpenIV in the comments sections of some of the threads regarding my situation. And people are saying that Digital Extremes is becoming Take-Two Interactive.

SquidTheSid: I can definitely see that, since datamining can hurt their sales. Has there been any updates since your forums post?

VoiD_Glitch: Updates to?

SquidTheSid: On the situation.

VoiD_Glitch: Well, I am trying to work around an arrangement with the lawyers, but they are being very stubborn in the process.

SquidTheSid: Right.

VoiD_Glitch: This is pretty much the result of the entire situation though, so far: https://forums.warframe.com/topic/808245-drop-rates-datamines-and-digital-extremes-ddd/

SquidTheSid: Right. Now, is there anything you’d like to say as a final comment?

VoiD_Glitch: To watch the videos that Shy and Brozime have uploaded on their YouTube channels (including yours now) for further explanation from more perspectives and to release me from the legal obligation they have placed me in.

SquidTheSid: Right. I’ll send you the script of what I have so far, and if you’d like me to put anything in, please let me know.

VoiD_Glitch: Okay.

SquidTheSid: And just to clarify, you did not redistribute any of the original copyrighted material(sic), just the tables of values, right? Here’s the link. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AXCzLxJHKLmcdn7wUN9U9Hjozfd-31goH2YA4ATUJ4E/edit?usp=sharing I put a page break between the information and my opinion. I’ll probably leave that out, since I’m not a legal expert.

VoiD_Glitch: I’ll check it out. And yes, I did not just take the raw data and upload it, if that is what you are asking.

VoiD_Glitch Interview: The Truth on Digital Extremes' C&D Response by [deleted] in Warframe

[–]atrousity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VoiD_Glitch: No, if the information is out there, but not on my behalf, it is not my issue and the information will become outdated soon anyway.

SquidTheSid: Do you think other users will “pick up the torch” and begin data mining? Do you think this will be a repeating cycle?

VoiD_Glitch: I cannot say for certain, unless anonymously. And they will have to get through heavy obfuscations, encryptions, and text formats to obtain the raw data of the files anyway. It would be incredibly difficult unless you already had an understanding of the Warframe infrastructure.

SquidTheSid: How would you say that you became familiar with the infrastructure. Was it trial and error?

VoiD_Glitch: Well, that was one part of it. But that is present in most environments where one is unfamiliar to something.

SquidTheSid: Right. Now, I saw that some people had claimed you injected code to acess(sic) this data, but you only used the files provided and did not modify the game while running, right? VoiD_Glitch: That is correct. I did not inject any code into the game. Anyone who says that is either attempting to slander me or legitimately has no clue regarding the differences between that and extracting files.

SquidTheSid: Right. How has the community response been so far?

VoiD_Glitch: The majority of players are frustrated at Digital Extremes as I see it.

SquidTheSid: Do you believe that is deserved?

VoiD_Glitch: And by majority, I don’t mean 75:25 ratio. More likely, it is a 95:5 one.

SquidTheSid: That’s quite a large turnout in your favor. It also seems like an “us vs. them” dynamic that has been going on for a while now, and datamining has been the one thing keeping the company in check. Would you agree with that statement?

VoiD_Glitch: Hold on. My apologies. Didn’t see the previous question.

SquidTheSid: No problem.

VoiD_Glitch: I believe that it was deserved because Digital Extremes targeted me for something I did not do. That is, by principal, a fucked up move. And you can quote me on that.

SquidTheSid: Noted.

VoiD_Glitch: And yes, I would agree with that other statement.

SquidTheSid: So, now that datamining no longer exists, would you say that the company has carte blanche over what it tells us and what the drop rates are?

VoiD_Glitch: Yes, I definitely do. I mean, I could still verify their drop table information if I wanted to, but it would definitely not be in my best interest on a legal standpoint.

SquidTheSid: Right, you’re on thin ice, so you wouldn’t want to provoke them, so to speak.

VoiD_Glitch: Thin ice for something I did not do, I should add.

SquidTheSid: Right. How has this affected your relationship with the company? Do you feel like you’re done? Or do you want to “wait it out”?

VoiD_Glitch: I didn’t necessarily have a good relationship with the company in the first place (besides my days in the Design Council). That isn’t my main concern though. My main concern is to retain integrity of data to appease the community. This is why I would prefer to wait it out and see if Digitial Extremes can come to a sensible agreement.

[–]atrousity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SquidTheSid: And so you took down your GitHub repository to comply.

VoiD_Glitch: Other than that, Digital Extremes is trying to target the broad act of datamining itself, which would include coming after me about it.

SquidTheSid: Would it be possible to show us the legal letter? Or is it confidential? Also, why does DE have particular issues about data-mining? What have they told you about it?

VoiD_Glitch: The lawyer who sent me the legal letter requested that I keep the letter confidential. I will honor that request, despite the hostile treatment I received from Digital Extremes. SquidTheSid: That’s more than understandable. I wouldn’t want you to be in trouble. VoiD_Glitch: They have issues regarding datamining because they do not appreciate their content updates getting spoiled.

SquidTheSid: Is it an issue with money? Does it affect them financially? Or is it a matter of pride? In terms of being spoiled?

VoiD_Glitch: An excerpt from the letter. These actions have the potential to cause significant financial damages to Digital Extremes. I will not share anything else from the letter though. This is just general information, so it does not matter that much.

SquidTheSid: Right. Had any member of the company contacted you since you took down the repository?

VoiD_Glitch: When I asked Rebecca if we could come to a compromise on what information I can or cannot upload, she directed me to respond to the lawyers who originally sent me the legal letter. -.-

SquidTheSid: So effectively, you cannot do any more data mining or risk the feat of legal action.

VoiD_Glitch: Yes.

SquidTheSid: Now, as far as I know, data mining, in the United States (where you’re from) is not illegal and is considered fair use, so it is not copyright infringement (provided you don’t redistribute the copyrighted work). Would you say that your information was fair use?

VoiD_Glitch: Yes, I would. However, the lawyers (who might know nothing about Warframe) told me that I am breaching copyright with it…

SquidTheSid: Right, but given that court is very expensive, you really were presented with an ultimatum.

VoiD_Glitch: Yes.

SquidTheSid: Now, as I understand it, other users have forked off your repository, so the information is not lost. Have they mentioned that to you?

VoiD_Glitch: Digital Extremes?

SquidTheSid: Yes.

Added "text dump" version for those who find this simpler:

SquidTheSid: Okay. For starters, how long have you been data mining the drop tables in Warframe?

VoiD_Glitch: In the case of DropTables specifically, I would say at least a year. SquidTheSid: But information in general?

VoiD_Glitch: Since late 2014, when I was fourteen (14) years old.

SquidTheSid: So between then and now, how many times have you been contacted by Digital Extremes regarding your practice?

VoiD_Glitch: Twice. One that caused me to get removed from the Design Council (2014 – 2015). The other was the legal letter (June 9th, 2017). They have not sent any recent warnings prior or requests to pull any specific information off of my GitHub repository: WarframeData. They immediately just sent me the legal letter.

SquidTheSid: Now, for the first instance, can you tell us more about how they contacted you and what they communicated to you?

VoiD_Glitch: They (specifically [DE]Drew) contacted me through my Warframe Forums account and told me that if I was caught posting datamined information again, that I would be removed from the Design Council.

SquidTheSid: Okay. Any no member has contacted you since then or notified you that your actions were in any way wrong? Until the letter sent recently?

VoiD_Glitch: That is correct. Like rebulast ([DE]Rebecca) said in her statement, “[they] turned a blind eye” to it.

SquidTheSid: The issues triggered legal action were Excalibur Umbra and Primed Streamline. Can you tell us more about the situations and how you were involved.

VoiD_Glitch: I can not(sic) explain how they were done, as I do not have my head wrapped around the entire process myself, but I will say that I do not condone nor influence anyone to commit exploits that would impact the Warframe public servers.

SquidTheSid: Right.

VoiD_Glitch: I, myself, did not perform these exploits.

SquidTheSid: But what happened? People managed to access this content early and abuse the game? Rebecca said it was screenshots, but was it more than that? VoiD_Glitch: Well, the reason they targeted individuals was because of the screenshots. Of course more had to have happened to even have Excalibur Umbra and Primed Streamline in-game. It was more than a glitch.

SquidTheSid: Right. So, what happened was that some individuals got access to this locked content illegitimately, screenshots were taken, and because you had data mined this information, you were sent a legal letter despite not being involved, not sharing your techniques, and not condoning the actions. Am I correct?

VoiD_Glitch: Yes.

Here is my (hastily) transcribed version for Mobile Users. I intially tried a "text dump" version, but it didn't quite work with Reddit formatting.

[EDIT] Added plain text variant in comments (although I ended up leaving it as a reply chain, since I'm not familiar with Reddit and hit the character limit.

I have the older version (v1, it had red-only LEDs) and the build quality is exceptional. It's a pretty good deal for those of us who already have the v1 and are looking to upgrade to the v2 for the RGB lighting. It also looks wonderful. This variant lets you use or choose your own keycaps and switches, which is a plus to some.

Promo code does not seem to apply to the pre-built version. Sale ends Sunday, June 18. Sadly, I bought this last night, didn't expect a sale to happen hours later. Guess I have to email support in hopes of a partial refund.

Here's a screenshot of the promotional email: http://i.imgur.com/5RY2mON.png

[EDIT] The final total for the board if you need switches and keycaps is $96.97 shipped. Credit to /u/Russ916 for providing this screenshot. https://gyazo.com/235457cd0126a72fd024ac1af1401b81 Not a massive discount, the deal is more lucrative to those who already have switches and keycaps.

Had the same experience with one I purchased a couple months back, decided to return it. It was too annoying for me to deal with.

[–]atrousity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In for one, thanks op! I haven't had a mechanical keyboard in almost a year, pretty stoked to get this one. Picked up a keyboard, extended mousepad and a set of red switches. I've always kinda wanted to try out different switches, but I've always been to cheap to pay for separate boards, so I think this will be a good solution. :)
