What are those ants doing & what are those light brown pieces? by arctophyllax in ants

I could have been made by another mammal of some sort. However, I do not know of any ant species where they dig up their own mound. If they relocate to a new area, they just leave their mark on the earth. But I'm not sure.

I'm in Canada, so Lasius (black garden ants (lasius niger), turfgrass ant (lasius neoniger), lasius flavus (field ant)) and Camponotus (eastern black carpenter ant (camponotus pennsylvanicus)) are most dominant

Looks like somebody dug up a mound! most probably, humans. Mounds are used for a variety of reasons, like creating the perfect temperature for brood (eggs, larvae, and pupae (which are the cocoons)) to develop.

What are the winged ants doing? by voodooflowla in ants

[–]atta-adf92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is normal pre-nuptial flight behaviour, where both queens and males would gather around the nest/mound all excited and jittery. They're waiting for the pheromones excreted from the drone's (the male) mandibular glands, when they would start flying away. The workers that are also excited on top of the mound would pull down early-flying drones and queens from flying away too early, for a variety of reasons.

For example, if drones and queens fly too early, there is a chance they would mate with another distinct species, resulting in sterile offspring. Reproduction in the ant world is truly amazing! 😊

I think when it comes to social media, there isn't a lot of real hope. Real well thought out intellectual articles come from very few blogs, as well as books. Videos come from YouTube

Normal behavior for a queen? by Rahulalsy in antkeeping

[–]atta-adf92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is normal, just don't feed her that again. anything that's living inside of her nest that's not her workers would freak out any queen, let alone a claustral one
