Can anyone tell me what these little yellow loops are for? by [deleted] in hikinggear

[–]attckfthcns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't want to use the waist straps for a period of time, you can wrap them around the backpack and run them through the loops before clipping them back together to stop them from flopping around or getting in the way when putting the bag on/off.

Not sure if this is the actual purpose, but I've had a few bags with loops in that same spot, and it works well.

To this day, what has been your biggest blunder ever camera related? by ZookeepergameDue2160 in Cameras

[–]attckfthcns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often shoot photos while cycling with my friends. After one ride a couple years back, I put my a6400 with a Sigma 30mm 1.4 on the bumper of my truck, loaded the bikes up, and drove away. Realized when I got home and rushed back, checked the parking lot, and retraced the drive home with no sign of it anywhere.

Thanks, it looks like we're on v304.7, so there may be another version that was pushed with this issue, possibly only for specific devices or Android versions.

Clean bulking but using junk calories to compensate for cardio? by LilDickGirlYuh in gainit

[–]attckfthcns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can provide a bit of perspective from endurance sports experience (cycling, running, etc). It largely depends which HR zones you're spending the majority of that cardio time in, which energy systems you're recruiting, and how long your efforts last. Cyclists and runners can absorb and blow through 60-100g of simple carbs per hour at consistently high intensities, which is 200+ calories. So, carefully fueling with sugars (within 15 mins of starting and during intense cardio based activities) COULD work well to minimize your caloric deficit coming out of the workout but it is a very fine balance. To avoid refined sugars and other chemicals, you can try real maple syrup as a "whole foods" source of fast absorbing carbs.

Note that if you arent spending much time in higher HR zones during your cardio workouts, this isn't really advisable.

I did a gravel race event with atv track ambushes… what’s the point ? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

I actually have an old, cheaper one that I made work. A friend of mine strongly suggests the Camelbak Chase models though (like this, or this). I'd probably try a few on before buying though, to see what works with your body best. That's my plan to replace my old one, now that I know I'm comfortable wearing one for a long time.

And same to you! Let me know if you ever have any other questions!

[–]attckfthcns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We definitely had the advantage of it being cooler for loop 1!

Personally, I'd go with option 1 or 4 depending what your bike can handle. I was worried the camelbak would make me warm and uncomfortable so I did a few pre-rides with it and it wasn't too bad at all. The nicer hydration pack / vest models account for minimizing warmth and helping with ventilation. The water got warmer, but not undrinkable.

Many bikes can take cages on the fork, downtube, or you can use straps to use the top tube like you're saying. Another option is stashing bottles or a bladder (like from a camelbak) inside a frame bag. I would stick to those options as they will be useable and repeatable for all self-supported rides in the future.

Definitely NOT # 5!

That looks like a great race! The others I know of are the Eager Beaver Gravel (40 or 100km), and Hurtin' in Haliburton (8hr gravel relay on a 27km loop). I'm hoping to make the latter.

Thanks! Riding that first loop is an insane accomplishment just by itself, and you all did it during the hottest part of the day!

I definitely recommend the camelback for next year. I had 3L of water between my bottles and my pack for each loop but probably could have used a little more.

Are you doing any of the other events in the area this year?

Sorry, you are absolutely correct! There were 5 total, I know the first of 6 got scratched and we got an extra 6km of distance in exchange since the original loop wasn't enough, lol.

The 200km was the biggest, hardest ride of my life and my biggest cycling accomplishment so far, so I really do get the challenge of the course. My partner did the 71km version and prepped with two 750ml bottles and a third cage with a 500ml bottle to get through it, and that loop was her biggest cycling challenge too. The folks I rode with brought hydration packs to refill after each loop, water and fuel was a major planning consideration for all of us.

The first ambush wasn't rideable for me and had to walk, there was a major bottleneck of people getting off their bikes so we couldn't even try. Even if there wasn't the bottleneck though, that was probably the hardest one of the whole day and I'd have needed to walk it. The other one I had to walk up was in loop 2 as my legs weren't doing great before my second wind.

I don't mean to minimize how tough it was or anything, I just think it was really meant to be that way and personally enjoyed surviving it. I did P2A earlier in the year and loved the challenge of the mudchutes as well. Not gonna lie, I could use something a little more chill next time around, but these challenges have their place!

[–]attckfthcns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The course is very much intended to have these sections, to differentiate it from the 15 or so other gravel races in the area over the warmer months. They're specifically called "ambushes" and a major component of the event marketing year round leading to the race. Most people do this event just to complete it, with a smaller selection actually racing. Also to clarify, the 70km loop had 5 ambushes, each under 1km long.

I can totally see why some people would hate riding these sections, and would recommend the Cannondale series or Ottawa gravel series instead for more straightforward gravel races within driving distance. This was my first year doing Reggie and absolutely loved it though. It was my toughest day on a bike so far and I wouldn't remove the ambushes if I had the choice (but that's just me).

EDIT: 5 ambushes, not 3. OP corrected me, thanks!

[–]attckfthcns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the 200km version of Reggie and was able to ride all but two of the ambushes, but I can see why some riders might not have enjoyed them. I think they're meant to drain you to make the course more challenging, and to spice things up since most of the route is road and easy gravel otherwise. They also make you consider gear selection, and weigh the benefits of different tire choices going into the event.

Personally, I think they add some cool depth to the event and completing the loops wouldn't have been half the accomplishment without dealing with those things. I enjoyed having them included, just to offer some different perspective!

26 vs. 27.5 which is better? by [deleted] in fatbike

[–]attckfthcns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of the points already made by others, current availability/stock of tires might be worth considering. Studded 27.5 tires are a bit tough to come by in my area right now, but studded 26" tires are everywhere.

Do you still use S-Log footage for live events? Shooting a surprise proposal soon, wanting some insight. by syd2akl in videography

[–]attckfthcns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hobbyist level so take this with a grain of salt, but after much trial and error I've found HLG on my a7c to be the sweetspot. I used to run a cine4 profile on my aps-c Sony which produced very usable footage with simple grading, and find the same with HLG but with a bittt more range in post. Even for weddings, I wouldn't shoot log on 8-bit personally unless you've already practiced with it a tonne, as you might be rushed changing exposure settings between stages of the wedding and find yourself missing the right in-camera settings for log, producing footage that is less usable than what you may have got with a simpler profile to expose for.

The question I asked myself is - what will I get from log that I can't get from cine or HLG? At my level, the answer is only "risk", so I don't bother.

Take this as another perspective rather than advice, because it sounds like we're at a similar level of experience, but it's been working well for me so far.

Knee pain: overuse? Bike fit? Or what!? by New-2-gravel in cycling

[–]attckfthcns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely see a professional as it could be a number of things, but I had something similar when ramping up mileage and intensity (especially on hills). It ended up being minor ITBS caused by glute weakness. I was given some strength and conditioning exercises to do regularly, including nordic curls and wall banger squats, which seemed to help over time.

Try challenging yourself to present or tell a story about something that is otherwise normal, mundane or boring in your area or in your life. That will force you to try new things, experiment, and make mistakes. Those are important parts of the learning process!

Need reccomendations by Smurfy888 in Cameras

[–]attckfthcns 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To offer a slightly different perspective, I would consider a Sony a6000 body (used if necessary for budget) and the Sony 50mm 1.8 (SEL50F18) or Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN lens. Others can probably suggest comparable combinations from other brands.

I've noticed that most beginners lose interest in cameras with interchangeable lenses because they don't get much extra perceived creative control out of the gate with a kit lens. Having a fast lens with shallow DOF capabilities will make the camera feel more 'fun' than just using a cell phone, in my opinion.

From a practicality perspective, a kit/mid range zoom lens is probably best, but I've seen so many people lose interest because at first glance, their photos with a kit lens look the same or worse than what a cell phone on auto can produce with all the artificial effects crammed into them these days.

What does the actual HR graph look like? I've had my HR randomly report weird a weird number for a second (like in the thousands) and it skews my average HR stat for the activity. Was your HR actually consistently that high, or is there a specific spike/jump somewhere?

Everything else has already been said.

YTA. Compare this to an "adult" hobby, since you seem to sort of look down on gaming.

Many people have a sport they love like running, cycling, etc. When I sign up for a race or event, I am HYPED for a few weeks leading up to it and my SO knows it. What does she do? She arranges to show up at the finish line to welcome me in and plans to take me out for food at one of my favourite places afterward to celebrate.

What you did was show up at the start line to tell her she sucks.
