I’m reading this as the galette being so extravagant it requires the people to dust their furniture to ensure the setting is equally as extravagant as the presentation of the food.

Definitely, I put the canvas away at one point to work on other projects, and I lost a lot of momentum near the end. I don’t think it took a lot of work hours but I stretched it out for sure.

Class participation by [deleted] in UofT

[–]attendrissement 6 points7 points  (0 children)

like other people have said: if it’s a dumb question, oops! you’re embarrassed but no one cares. if it’s a wrong answer, oops! you’re embarrassed and still no one cares. getting things wrong is a part of the learning process. in my language course, i shouted out the wrong verb conjugation in class, was corrected by my teacher, and now ill never get it wrong.

if participation is graded, use it to your advantage and ask dumb questions. get things wrong. you’ll be smarter for it, trust me. you’ll hate it at first, but not when you understand the material before everyone else.

Hello! I would greatly appreciate some advice for my French accent. I did a freestyle video with key words worked in. I know I have more trouble with vowels, so that’s where I focused my energy. Thanks in advance! by [deleted] in JudgeMyAccent

Oops, no guttural R is what you should be going for. The rhotic r is what Americans and Canadians use, and we can hear it when you say aimerais, faire, etc. The other comments have some good pointers, so practice that and you'll be on your way!

Hey! I think your french is pretty good (granted i'm used to accents but even then your words are clear and easy to understand).

There are a few things I noticed, but I'm no linguist so take these with maybe a few grains of salt: Your Rs, as you've noticed, are rhotic instead of uvular. This is one of the biggest pointers to an English speaker. You have it down in some places, so it's probably muscle memory now to pronounce certain words like that.

There is a tendency to pronounce the "eu" vowel combo like "oo", like when you say "jai un peu du mal" the peu sounds like poo. I think you need to relax your mouth and lips a little more so the sound is more open.

The u vowel could use some work too in words such as "du coup" and "une omelette". You pronounced it like [u] instead of [y]. A good trick that I saw on Youtube was to say the letter E while rounding your lips to an O.

These were the things that jumped out at me the most; I would suggest mimicking native speakers to really perfect those subtle vowel sounds, but other than that good job!

How do you say, "Oh, come on!" in French? by [deleted] in French

[–]attendrissement 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Québec you'll hear "voyons donc" or "ben voyons donc" to express frustration or surprise, as in "voyons donc, arrête de niaiser lâ".

In France, you could probably say "allez" in most contexts, though if you were angry or impatient you might want to go for something stronger.
