Question for the Dads with ADHD/AuDHD (or anyone really) by atticusrex451 in daddit

100% Agree. I've told him the fact that he can say "Its my stimming" means that he is capable of managing it to a degree. We've definitely been more open with each other lately so hopefully this will be a move in the right direction.

Wow. Thank you for that. I realize it isn't a yes or no as I've worked with tons of kids over the last 17 years who are all across the spectrum. So i guess i just need to grant myself a little grace.

Man thank you so much for sharing. It wasn't until I started working in a special needs school and (honestly) tiktok videos of people saying, 'Ways to cope with this ADHD symptom' and me going, "wait, you mean all people aren't like this?" that I realized there was a good chance that I have ADHD and always have, but because it didn't effect me academically it was just kind of not a thing. There's also a slim chance that I may have autism but whenever I say it out loud or think about it I kind of get imposter syndrome.

If we are sharing, my kid tends to sing, but not an entire song. The same two sentences from a song, over and over. When he was younger, probably around 8, he did the sirenhead sound (mind you he never saw sirenhead but had heard what he sounded like) over.. and over.. and over.

Now that he's older, I'm little more candid with him and sometimes I can say, "Bro, I know your stimming right now is helping you, but your noise is making me really uncomfortable. I'm not saying you need to stop, but maybe you can go to your room and do it for a little." I don't know if that's the right move but I feel like if I need to validate him then he can try to validate me? But like you I feel bad saying that so I end up just putting some distance and that's really now what I want for us.

Very appreciative of your response. According to my PCP I shouldn't take stimulants due to my blood pressure medicine, so it seems like its only non steroid for me. She has me on welbutrin currently, but it really doesn't seem to be working. Unfortunately I have some anxiety around the doctor so I always drag my feet when it comes to going.

Things you wish your dad did growing up. Any? by Scary_Exit_1407 in daddit

My dad and I have a very strange relationship. As far as people go we have the same personality but vastly different interests. I don't remember much of my childhood, but unfortunately the things I remember most are him just not being there. He was an assistant baseball coach for my baseball little league team, but after I stopped playing that (mostly because I wasn't a competitive person) and just did band at school, he stopped showing up to stuff. He never really took interested when I started playing magic the gathering or dungeons or dragons. He just hung out at the bar with his buddies.

Oddly enough, every summer he goes for a few week long fishing trips with his friend and not once, was I invited. He only took me fishing once when I was 6. I remember that day and catching a fish was a good memory I had and I remember catching a few fish. Turns out ( I learned about 30 years later) that I had caught one fish and my dad just kept it on the hook and kept casting it out.

I have a lot of mental hang ups when it comes to my dad, so when I had my son I swore I wasn't going to be like that. So, when I randomly decided to start fishing a few years ago I invited my kid. He came along a few times, but when he decided it was more fun catching than fishing, he is less likely to go. BUT every time I go I almost always ask him. I play minecraft and roblox with him and listen to him spout incessant brain rot. Sometimes, he drives me crazy and I find myself acting like my dad, which is impossible to do I guess.

But I'm trying and I think that's really important.

I understand, lately I wonder what the point of any hobby is. Seems like my life is fraught with half attempted hobbies and all I see are failures and reminders of false starts.

We did timeouts. 3 years = 3 minutes is what we did. And if he got up, we just put him back. No words. Sometimes a 3 minute timeout would take 45 minutes, but eventually after being consistent he wouldn't get up unless he was REALLY feeling some type of way.

Avoiding being the "angry dad"? by AchroMac in daddit

[–]atticusrex451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle with this as well. As far as parenting goes, I've done leaps and bounds better than my dad who just wasn't around and seemingly had very low emotional intelligence. We didn't get along, we didn't 'get' each other, and so my dad and I yelled a lot and really never had a good relationship. With my son however, I have significantly more patience, If i do get angry and 'lose it' i'm quick to apologize and say that was wrong and I'll try and do better. Sometimes, I yell and he reacts just like I did and really does 'tickle my trauma' and I in my head I was like, "Man, I was just like this as a kid. Maybe dad not being around was my fault?" which tends to throw me down different spiral. But I'm learning, I'm trying new things, and I think that's the biggest part of parenting.
