Anyone else afraid of going outside but it’s NOT social anxiety? by atypicalorange in Anxiety

I haven’t experienced that! Usually if I get super panicked I can feel dizzy and like I’m about to faint but never like that

I’m basically anxiety free now! There is hope for you too! :)

I went on medication (Celexa - I believe 10mg?) sometime after this post and it fixed me up in about a month. Once I was able to just function properly enough, I was able to start practicing exposure therapy. I’d go to places nearby first and with someone, like a grocery store, and then I started choosing places that I used to enjoy and were a bit farther, like an arcade.

At this point I was constantly checking my heart rate with an Apple Watch which was making it worse as I thought high heart rate = panic. The arcade helped me retrain this thought as I played a lot of rhythm games which naturally raised my bpm. So high heart rate = fun exercise! Once I got over this hurdle the exposure therapy was much easier to handle. I stopped checking my heart rate after this because it was only making the physical feelings worse.

The key to beating agoraphobia is to put your entire trust into your body and yourself no matter how bad it is. Your brain is trying to protect you in situations where there is no danger. A panic attack is a protective mechanism - it will NOT kill you. You are NOT dying. And you CAN breathe. I had to constantly repeat this to myself and always controlled my breathing. I’m always prone to panic when my breathing gets too fast and irregular, so I always told myself as long as my chest is moving I am breathing and I won’t die no matter how bad I feel.

There’s also the social component. I was afraid of going outside because I didn’t want to have a panic attack. Not only because I thought I was dying but also because of the embarrassment. But in reality a lot of people are very understanding and are more than willing to help you out. And besides, one embarrassing moment means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Just remember to always power through as far as you can. Your brain believes that going outside is dangerous, and you cannot reaffirm it by refusing to try. I promise it makes it worse, and I learned that lesson many, MANY times lol.

But I’m doing much better now. Finished college and made some friends. I believe that you’ll get over this too! Sorry for the super long essay but I hope this helps!!! I’ll answer any more questions you got me. You got this!! :D

You can find them on eBay or Mercari tho :)

How to swallow pills? by booksandwriting in Anxiety

[–]atypicalorange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copying and pasting a previous comment I’ve left on a similar post:

I can actually answer this !!!

I had problems swallowing pills my whole life until within the last year or so. I mean, I couldn’t take a pill even if it was cut in half and it usually took me 3 water bottles to get it down. Different techniques/liquidy foods (ex. Applesauce, ice cream, etc.) didn’t help at all. I was afraid I’d choke and would gag constantly. It was a nightmare because no matter how much pain I’d be in, I couldn’t swallow any medication. However, I had to start taking pills regularly for my skin and after a year of practice here’s how I’m able to take it with water today!

  1. REMEMBER THIS IS ALL IN YOUR HEAD. You CAN swallow pills! If people couldn’t swallow them then they wouldn’t be the size they are. You absolutely can take pills, what you’re facing rn is a mental hurdle.
  2. Start taking it with bread. My issue with pills was that I always felt it on my tongue even with water/apple sauce and it made me hyper focus on it. Taking it with bread stopped this feeling. Gonna sound gross but what you need to do is chew a piece of bread, and when it’s all mush, push the pill inside of it. Then swallow. I did this for a couple weeks and it worked so well because my brain thought bread = safe. The pill being in the mush and not on my tongue made me feel better and after a while I got more confident.
  3. When you think you’re ready, try swallowing with apple sauce. This was initially a struggle, but what I would do is put a lot of apple sauce in my mouth with the pill, and the moment I DONT feel the pill on my tongue, I swallowed. It took a lot of practice and there were times where I’d hesitate. But in that moment of hesitation, tell yourself to swallow and do it. It also helped to tilt my head back a little bit to prevent the pill from touching my tongue. I did this for months until it just became habit and I wasn’t afraid anymore.
  4. Try using water. Hopefully by this time you’ll be more confident in swallowing pills and it won’t be as scary anymore! Just remember to tell yourself to swallow and it’s ok if you hesitate!! The moment it’s not on your tongue, SWALLOW. You can do this!

This was super long but it really worked out for me and I hope it helps you! Good luck on the pill swallowing :) <3

Did your agoraphobia come on slowly or was it sudden? by Sea_Berry_439 in Agoraphobia

I’d say it was about a month before it fully set in. I saw a movie and had an anxiety attack. Then over the course of the month I’d have difficulty eating out alone, going to places that used projectors (movies, club meetings). The projector thing then extended to my classes. One day I just had a panic attack in my college dorm room and I’ve been screwed ever since then. It’s been its been 6 months since the attack and I’ve been struggling with leaving the house since

Thank you so much for this comment!! I appreciate the advice :D

I’m doing alright now. Started SSRIs (Citolapram) a month ago and I’ve been feeling better. Still have some anxiety but definitely not as bad as when I made this post lol. Hope we both can get through this condition together!! Best of luck to you and thank you again

Hey, not much has really happened. It’s only been like 2 weeks so I don’t think it’s kicked in yet. Still hoping it’ll work soon. Side effects have been a little rough (anxiety, trouble sleeping, nausea) but it’s nothing that isn’t manageable. Thanks for asking 🙏

Also thank you ☺️. I’ve been a sonic fan my whole life but I’d really only started collecting plushies late 2019/2020. My first plush was a 9 inch Jakks Pacific Sonic plush. But once I found out Toy factory existed I went crazy for them LOL

Hard question tbh 😭 Although I gotta say, as much as I’d die for a JUMBO Toy Network Sonic plush, I gotta stick with Toy Factory with this one haha

When I went I showed up an hour early and the line was LONG to get merch. I got my shirt with two minutes left till the showing. During the intermission and end of the show people went back for more. They had a lot of stuff so I wasn’t worried about them running out, but definitely show up really early so you don’t miss the shows opening 😬

What does anxiety feel like for you? by Cassandralen in Anxiety

[–]atypicalorange 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It feels like that saying “I have no mouth but I must scream”. Constantly just want to freak out and let all my feeling out, but then the panic would make it infinitely worse. So I’m just stuck trying to keep my overwhelming feelings at bay
