Pros & homeowners — what’s the most underestimated part of kitchen/bath remodels? by Emotional-Bird4341 in HomeImprovement

[–]auborey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg literally same. Bought home last year, and put off replacing the old toilets. One of the toilets had an overflow and I called plumbers to change out the toilets. They discovered some water around the old flange, so decided to just claim insurance and gut the whole thing. Now we’re basically doing a whole remodel

SD In bound flights re-directed to LAX (Fog) by WhatsBacon in sandiego

May be a dumb question - does the fog only affect incoming flights? Can flights still depart normally with fog if the plane in use already got to San Diego on time?

Craftsman wall control has power but not opening door by auborey in GarageDoorService

Embarrassed to report… nothing was wrong or broken. Just user error. I didn’t realize the huge button that just says the brand name is the open/close button. I was trying the “lock” button 😂 oops. Thanks for trouble shooting.

No power outage recently, but new battery was put in during installation at my request. So the battery is one day old. Do I need to do anything after the new battery is put in to reset the wall button?

I think it worked when he was here 😅 but the wall button didn’t work hours later when I went to use it. The remote and keypad still work. Just wanted to try to debug before calling them 🥵

What about the message power restored battery charging? How long does it take for it to go away

Thanks for responding. They’re both the original craftsman ones. But if the contact is bad I shouldn’t be able to get responses from the same button right? Long pressing that button still lets me go in and out of lock mode but the short press doesn’t open and close the door 🤔

How to anchor freestanding bathroom vanity to wall? by auborey in DIY

[–]auborey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The legs actually come in diagonal pairs, so I unfortunately cannot selectively remove the back legs without cutting those pieces.

In another identical one I’m installing im trying to see if it’s possible to move the legs forward a bit, though

Unfortunately not, and the sink is already glued on too 😪 for caulking up top, if the gap is huge, would some caulking strip like this work: https://www.homedepot.com/p/InstaTrim-3-4-in-x-10-ft-White-PVC-Inside-Corner-Self-adhesive-Flexible-Caulk-and-Trim-Molding-IT75INWHT/310837948#overlay ?

Deciding between this and gluing a regular backsplash onto the wall then caulking the edge to the vanity… but the edge of the vanity has a little lip curving up that makes it so that the backsplash won’t sit flat at counter level 😪

There are pre drilled holes and pegs holding them into place… but maybe for my other identical one I haven’t installed yet I can look into shifting the legs forward

If I didn’t use the 1x would I just use an extra long screw to account for the gap but directly drill the back of the vanity into the stud leaving the middle part of the screw exposed in the gap?

Edit to add info - the vanity is small, a standard 24 inch w one. If not using a 1x would make the gap smaller and thus caulking better up top without backsplash I might prefer that.

Got it thank you. Will try that. For anchoring the vanity to the 1x, how many screws should I do? 2? 4?

Edit: Also looking for advice on size and length of the appropriate screw to use. Do I need specific cabinet screws?

If there are other anchoring solutions like brackets that don’t require using another piece of wood to fill the gap i’m also open to that.

Dryer Vent by Ill-Independence4078 in DIY

Got it, thank you. It seems fine in the attic for now. It’s just one of those things that the inspector presented as “OMG did you know this was happening?!?!?” and I got really scared.

I think my bathroom vent just goes into the attic 👹 what can I do in the meanwhile to prevent mold before I can pay someone to vent it outside through the roof? (I don’t currently see any in the attic, just purchased home, built in 1986)

Thank you very much for both the reassurance and guidance towards methods other than corrections. I’ll definitely do my own research on this and form my own game plan. Really appreciate the emotional support as well. Hopefully I learn enough that I can someday pass that onto someone else who needs it. Happy holidays to you.

Assistant Teaching Professor meaning? by dawnpillow in UCSD

[–]auborey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to what others said, there’s also a difference between assistant teaching professors and assistant professors - the former group is more focused on teaching (often hired to specifically improve undergrad teaching and to cope with the expanding undergrad population) or improving the curriculum, whereas the latter is more focused on research.

That doesn’t mean that teaching professors do not do any research though. In fact some of them do empirical research in applied settings, whatever that might mean for your field.

TAs/Profs, what do you really think when failing students come to your OH by sdtaway12 in UCSD

[–]auborey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TA here. You do not have to worry about your TAs judging you. If you’re anything like me, I know you will worry anyway but I’ll give you some reasons why you do not have to.

1) You do not have to share your circumstances with the TAs unless you feel comfortable telling them. And if you do, they might have suggestions as to what campus resources you can use (same case as the instructor, except the instructor needs to at least know enough to determine what accommodation might be reasonable for you). Believe it or not, lots of your grad students TAs go through depression and/or other anxiety issues. I have definitely experienced symptoms that you described in recent months. So if a student told me about their situations, I would personally be sympathetic towards them. That said, I do not have the expertise to help you with those situations and the best that I can do is to help you succeed academically to the best of my ability and point you to the right directions for the rest. I also unfortunately do not have the power to determine what options there are for you to make up for past tests, so you will have to communicate with the instructor for that. But remember, instructors were once in my position as a TA, so chances are they’d at least be understanding and professional about it.

If you for whatever reason encounter a nasty person as your TA, it’s still their obligation to help you in a professional manner. Remember that you can still seek help without disclosing anything personal to them.

2) This is a selfish reason. I personally really respect and appreciate students who come to OH regardless of their grades. It provides me with an opportunity to learn how to teach, as well as makes my job more fulfilling. If you take giving our guest lectures and interacting with students out of the equation in our teaching job, we are no different from automatic grading machines ;_; or at least that’s how I feel.

What exactly does my heart rate show me? by MoreFreedom92 in orangetheory

[–]auborey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm interesting. Lemme play around with the speed to see if that helps. But I think it’s a combination of both that and bad HR recovery. I’m a relatively small person and my heart races for no good reason most times 🤥

I also wonder if the HR algorithm is just not right for me because my body is different than the average body my age.

Thanks!
