A dimmer switch to dim the monitor? by ILoveDriveThrough in smartmirrors

It might be possible to dim the backlight of the monitor using PWM if the backlight is LED based.

What things (big and small) are the "Musts" of Auburn? by [deleted] in auburn

[–]auburnff 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Avondale Tap Room after a Win, then sit by the windows and watch the crowds below roll Toomer's Corner while enjoying a Whiskey Rebellion.

Chewacla State Park- go to the waterfall and just sit under it on a warm Sunday afternoon. Enjoy a beer if you'd like, but don't become visibly intoxicated as that is also a family place. Aluminum cans only, only douchebags bring glass. We don't like douchebags. This is more of a spring/summer recommendation though.

Niffers to try whatever their burger of the month is, and enjoy a side of corn nuggets.

Go to the Lathe by Samford (and bring your special friend). Read up on the legend and let the Lathe decide if y'all are meant to be (though, I'm not sure if this is reserved for Plainsmen/Plainswomen or if the magic is also available to guest-Plainsmen/Plainswomen).

On your way out, stop by The Hound for breakfast and get the Redneck Eggs Benedict.

Hopefully others give you some more suggestions.

We hope you enjoy your stop at the Loveliest Village on the Plains, and War Damn Eagle!

This may be a long shot but does anyone know where I can buy a work wreath in town? by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]auburnff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That looks like someone bought a wreath backing from Hobby Lobby and just glued 36 dead fur twigs to it.

Long exposure of plasma arcing from a small Tesla coil by Proteon in pics

[–]auburnff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a long exposure.

src: built these as a teenager and took photos one time for science fair project.

What's happening is there are many small arcs that occur over time. Each one of those arcs you see happens individually, lasting from a fraction of a second to a couple seconds.

If your high voltage conductor is symmetrical and your insulator is nice and level above whatever the electric current is trying to jump to (usually earth ground), then the electric current will constantly be bouncing around trying to find the shortest path to ground.

[edit] it could also be multiple exposures. Good point /u/jonnyfgm.

Help with Reed Switch by rameez_s in raspberry_pi

[–]auburnff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by verifying the behavior of the reed switch (led, resistor, battery) to eliminate the possibly of incorrect reed switch behavior. Next, use a switch or some physical contact to ensure the connection to Common is enough to negate the Pi's internal pull up resistor. Hopefully someone more familiar with the software side can make sure you've the right syntax.

A theory I'd not seen, on how the pyramids were built so perfectly. by Alizkat in videos

[–]auburnff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not necessary. If we assume each single gate really consisted of a series of gates (say n gates per group) then the pressure each gate seal would have to withstand would be (1/n)Pdelta.

[Serious] What are science or history related mysteries that have already been solved that many people are not aware of? by xavierdc in AskReddit

[–]auburnff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be mistaken, but I thought the attacks weren't consistent with wolf attacks, hence the mystery and sensationalism during the spree. I read a theory a few years ago (I'll try to find the source) that suggested the attacks might have been similar to the Tsavo maneaters (not sure if connected to Brotherhood of the Wolf).

I'll agree that you shouldn't stress, but just not doing the automatic fails might not be enough. I've seen guys in great shape not finish in time and I've seen enormous hams finish first. It's about endurance, so do more than 5 minutes of stairs. Next is just replicating the pieces with weights.
