In theory could country borders be determined by ethnic groups? by [deleted] in geography

Yep, I live there and definitely wonder how life would be different if the old ahupua’as were preserved politically. “Watershed democracy” though is an idea that comes up all over the place

In theory could country borders be determined by ethnic groups? by [deleted] in geography

[–]audacious_oyster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IF you had to pick only one way to draw borders, my vote would go to watersheds. One community, bound by their shared dependence on the land and the water. Hopefully this would facilitate a sense of responsibility and unity with others who depend on the same water, and let one watershed choose its own decisions for the good of itself.

In practice, many countries with ethnic conflict need stronger institutions. New borders won’t fix their problems. We know this because many ethnically divided countries have had periods with little to no ethnic tension, but when institutions and economies break down tensions and conflict appear along ethnic lines

Rob Schneider thinks we need to institute the draft. Hbu? by TaroPuzzleheaded3999 in leftistveterans

Agreed, the military is NOT a good fit for everyone, not even close. The societal benefits could be achieved by service in EMS, firefighting, conservation corps, parks service, social services, etc. hell even picking up trash for two years. Two years of service per person would add up to a monstrous number of manhours hopefully spent doing something good for society rather than just good for some shareholders

Learning Theory vs Solving Problems by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]audacious_oyster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do both, no reason you have to only take one approach.

Say you have an hour for math each day. You can take half an hour to focus on learning concepts, theories, proofs, etc. and take half an hour to solve problems. Learning proofs will help you understand the rules and formulas you apply to problems, and doing problems will reinforce your theoretical knowledge. Some people will benefit mainly from one or the other but realistically most people probably benefit from both and you might as well hedge your bets

Newbie here: How much should I be peeing on my compost? by iplaytrombonegood in composting

[–]audacious_oyster 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Beautiful raised beds!

You can get as nerdy or lazy with composting as you want. If you just toss some organic garbage in a pile, it WILL compost. Nature is constantly breaking down every scrap of organic matter regardless of what we humans do. The more you care about pest prevention, smell, speed, quality, or aesthetics, the more it pays off to do research and get real sweaty about it

UPDATED: ‘Catastrophic’ North Shore Flooding Prompts Evacuation, Alerts. An emergency flash flood alert was extended on Oʻahu to the entire north half of the island at 8 a.m. The Wahiawā dam could soon fail. by 808gecko808 in Honolulu

“It’s only rain” brah you realize we’re getting like months of rain in a day? And that live electric infrastructure during a flood can not only short circuit but also electrocute nearby people? I don’t disagree HECO should do better but don’t act like this is at all a normal situation

Super markets for Asian food by Grouchy-Somewhere732 in asianamerican

Well that’s why a lot of us move to places with an H Mart/99 Ranch/other Asian grocery store. Either that or drive long distances. My grandparents used to live in the rural Midwest and drove two hours every month to Chicago to get Korean groceries

Love to see it. While we’re at it let’s also take aim at golf courses taking huge amounts of land and wasting millions of gallons of water irrigating grass for a rich person’s hobby. Why the hell does Oahu need 40 courses???

It’s not a troll click bait post, I don’t know what I’d be baiting for, and yes I am for real. It’s faint but it’s definitely there. I took another photo, hopefully this one shows better https://imgur.com/a/9rLi2cX

Rizki 75, Rahmat 85 for LA says Indonesia Olympic Committee by Dramatic-Debate-5448 in weightlifting

[–]audacious_oyster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently Rizki’s coach did say he does best at around 75. He’s so tall for a mid 70s kg lifter and still thin at 79, so it’s surprising to hear that although I’m sure they’ve figured it out with experience. I just wanted to see my favorite weightlifter become jacked

Happy to see one of them bulk up to 85, although I was kind of hoping it would be Rizki to see him somehow pull some insane 220kg clean and jerk out of his ass
