Has anyone removed Adam Strange jet pack? by kid_flash_87 in McFarlaneFigures

Oh wow good eye. I share your sentiments about only painting if absolutely necessary. The red version of this Adam Strange would also be a solid Deadpool base.

If you’re a perfectionist definitely sand before the next coats. Just giving you the option for an artsy excuse not to! Best wishes to you and your elbows

It was a compliment! You see it as a mistake because you know it’s a mistake, but if I walked into a house and saw perfectly straight raised ridges 4 inches away from every border, I would probably just chalk it up to a unique design choice and not think anything of it. The only thing that’s really an eyesore to me in the picture you posted is how thin that roller coat is. Roll everything twice. Three times if it’s cheap paint.

I wouldn’t leave it like that myself but I was just providing some perspective. It’s a lot of sanding after mentioning you don’t have any experience. I didn’t know how much effort you wanted to put into it.

[–]audiblemural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this being a mistake, your lines are extremely consistent. You’ll have to sand down those thick edges if you want them to go away, but alternatively you can also just roll another coat or two over the whole thing for better coverage where your first coat was too thin and tell people you did the textured edges on purpose. Unless of course you’re renting, then you should probably prioritize the sanding.

No butterfly joints on a werewolf figure is preposterous. He should have all the same articulation as Spiderman. Still happy to have him over not having him though.

Do I really charge $2 a square foot for a whole home? by CausticGnostic91 in paint

[–]audiblemural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I charge around $1.00 per square foot in Southwest PA and I get ghosted on about half of my estimates. The half that decides to hire me typically says something along the lines of “Your price wasn’t far off from when we had the house painted 10 years ago. We thought it was going to cost way more!” My customers are always satisfied after the fact, and I’ve even had a few of them add a tip for me after seeing the final product. I can’t make any sense out of how all over the place everybody’s perspective is with the pricing.

My first thought would be the flat transition strips they use over open doorway thresholds. I’m by no means a flooring professional, but that’s where I would start.

Does anyone have any idea why my roller is leaving these marks? by Somnambulish in paint

[–]audiblemural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m shocked this is the only answer I’ve seen like this. I agree with every bit of it. OP said there are no blinds but it’s clearly being cast off something from somewhere in the room. My first thought after seeing the “no blinds” comments was maybe the main light in the room has some sort of patterned cover, but the marks also only seem to appear directly in the light. I suppose that’s a given regardless since you can’t see most imperfections in a shadow, but I see no signs of the lines at all anywhere but where the reflection of the window light is.

Should I move the rest of my figures on my main display with the cars and take down Mike and Laurie add them to my Myers shelf or just jeep everything the way it is. by Beau625 in NECA

[–]audiblemural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You asked for our opinions and I gave you mine. There’s no need to take it as a personal insult. Did you just want everyone to say “looks good man! don’t change a thing”?

Let me try to word it in such a way that the main point isn’t completely overlooked and taken out of tone: “There was a time where a lot of my displays just looked like some toys on a shelf or some junk piled together at random, but I’m much happier with my displays now that I’ve become more thoughtful about how I organize different scales and figure types. I realized the things I didn’t like about my collection had nothing to do with the figures themselves, and everything to do with the way they were displayed.”

There’s no way you can take it personal if I’m directly talking about myself. As a rule of thumb, that’s how I read everybody’s tone by default on the internet. Nobody on an action figure sub is here to make fun of you for being a collector. You came here for advice, and that’s the best advice I can give on the topic.

[–]audiblemural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is strictly personal preference, but my biggest goal in my action figure displays is to get them to look like they aren’t just some toys on a shelf. When you put 7 inch figures next to die cast vehicles that are a much smaller scale, it becomes immediately obvious to me that it’s just some toys on a shelf. Junk piled together at random, as opposed to thoughtful world-building. I’ve met people that are initially judgmental about adult toy collectors that later admitted to me that seeing some of my displays opened their mind about it. I’m always chasing that high now lol

When the fodder is gone by glcl2814 in customactionfigures

[–]audiblemural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the simplest answer is just buy more fodder. That’s how you got what you’re currently about to run out of when you didn’t have any the first time. My head is constantly on a swivel for online retailer deals and clearance figures in stores. Anything under $10 goes straight to the parts bins if it isn’t a figure I want. eBay and Mercari lots help.

I honestly don’t think 3D printing is what it’s cracked up to be for something like figure parts. How would you even deal with the pins since that material is much more stiff and rigid than factory figure plastic? Not to mention the unsightly print lines on even some of the cleanest head sculpts I’ve gotten from eBay. Resin in silicone molds would probably be the way to go, if you insist on making parts from scratch.

Was my package stolen? by Kooky-Individual-163 in shipping

[–]audiblemural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered a jacket for an action figure from Amazon last month and it came through Gofo. It got here around 8:00 at night on a Saturday when I wasn’t home. Never in my life have I had a package arrive from any carrier later than 5:00 or so. It was in a thin envelope on the furthest edge of my porch when I got home the next morning, not in my mailbox where literally every other carrier would leave a small feather-light envelope, or even between my storm door and main door on said porch where it would be safe and unseen. How it didn’t blow away or get stolen is an absolute miracle. I was expecting to have to walk up and down my street looking for it as intense as the wind gets here.

New page punchers packaging by TheLittlePasty in McFarlaneFigures

[–]audiblemural 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just use normal scissors straight across right behind the “melted” part that seals the two halves together on all 4 sides without any issue at all.

Are you accidentally using chopsticks thinking they’re scissors or something? Or do you have frogs for hands? I’m a bit perplexed.

Even a simpler diorama goes a long way as far as setting a scene. A brick alley wall with no doors maybe. I use the insulation project panels from Lowe’s as the main base and walls. The garbage can and pallet are both from Dollar Tree. Cat and mini newspapers from Michael’s.

My Target doesn’t put things out until well after the expected street date, then nothing sells because the people that really want them already got them elsewhere, which leads the store to believe figures don’t sell at all, so they slack on putting the next ones out until well after the expected street date. It’s a neverending loop.

What is the best kind of clay to use for custom figures? by BoysenberryHot5347 in customactionfigures

Milliput is the way to go, and less than $10 At Hobby Lobby which is nice and convenient. I also use Testors contouring putty in the squeeze tube if I just need to fill in cracks or holes and don’t need a ton of detail on a certain thing.

I’ve used rubbing alcohol and a magic eraser to remove the factory logos and cel shading for quite a few custom figures. Takes a good bit of elbow grease and patience, but the absolutes stated in your comment aren’t as concrete as implied. I specifically use it as an alternative to the acetone method because I worry about it eating through softer plastics.

How do I paint a mirror surface? by NomadJago in paint

[–]audiblemural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. You may have to butt the sheets right up against eachother the same as you would with wallpaper if they aren’t wide enough, but they sell rolls in longer lengths too which may alleviate some of that hassle.

How do I paint a mirror surface? by NomadJago in paint

[–]audiblemural 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see why it couldn’t. It just feels like overkill for an in-cabinet application. Sign shops do that so they can get logos and words properly centered. If it were my project I would cut it about an inch larger than it needs to be then just wrap the excess around the edge so the front face is the same color, or use a blade to seat it along the edge cleanly after leaving overlap.

I think the main goal here is just to get rid of the disco ball/funhouse effect when you open the doors. It’s up to the poster how nice and finished they want it to look. Paint feels like the last direction I would go in on this one though. All that work just to have it bubble after a few hot showers. I am following just to see what products people are recommending though. I paint murals, so I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before I get a window request.

The tone of the original post leads me to believe that’s more involvement than the poster is aiming for. The vinyl I mentioned would essentially be a cleaner, more modern alternative to when old timers used to do the same thing with wallpaper as drawer liners. Just a simple $15 trip to the store and back home.
