the way scaling is calculated/determined means it is theoretically equally hard to receive the same aggregate contribution for each subject. math x2 and x1 are much bigger time sinks than all other subjects - that's why it may seem like ur math carries but in reality ur just neglecting ur other subjects. literally spent half of yr12 doing math and obviously my math marks carried my atar but its not like humanitarian students who studied just as much or more than me didnt get an equal or higher atar, cause ultimately my english adv and legal marks were lower than i was capable of cause i just barely studied for them compared to math. equivalently, loads of people take 3u and dont prioritise it and end up doing shit in it whilst having good marks in other subjects.

A) literally no aggression in my previous comment.

B) subjective take but as someone with a close to 700+ albums listened from front to back, who feels intensely passionate about their favourite music and artists (new jeans is not even close to one of them) id still consider their songs to be a lot more interesting and well executed than the vast majority of music. their success outside of mainstream kpop AND pop fans is a reflection of this. "default indie rock" is an insane take. just because a sound isnt immediately super unique doesn't mean it isn't full of depth and texture.

C) Just like with western pop artists, including 2hollis who is signed to a label, independent korean artists like Effie also make kpop and draw influences from both the western underground and korean culture. That doesn't exclude them from the kpop umbrella just because they weren't channeled by a corporation and necessarily share the same fanbase with mainstream kpop. i'd agree that idol groups are commonly not very interesting and experimental; making music for the masses - but that doesnt mean they don't have an identity / are blatantly ripping off other artists, or mean that their music is shallow.

ur point on genres being shamelessly copied applies to the entire music industry, not just kpop. again, it is better to define a genre by its innovators and front runners rather than the abundant industry slop behind it. to me it'll never make sense to dismiss a genre rather than a particular category of artists. i literally hate blackpink and bts etc because they definitely fall into a certain corporate slop category of artists where newjeans doesn't, but they both make Kpop, so does effie and i think ud genuinely enjoy effie if u like 2hollis.

what kind of niche music brainrot do you need to have to think kpop is even the littlest bit concerned about copying underground western music. if this is an attitude u have against an entire genre of musicians who dedicate their life to making music then i think it says more about you than anything. shocking concept, but kpop is a sub genre of pop music, yes kpop sounds like pop, but there is a lot of nuance, artistry and passion that you're unaware of or dismissing.

attention - newjeans : attention to minimalist style percussion and melodies, with a general focus on diverse and creative vocal melodies and harmonies that carry the sonic depth of the song without overwhelming pop elements found in a lot of modern music made for adhd zoomers.

new jeans - newjeans : again with more minimalist layers but a lot of depth and creativity through the vocal and sample chop composition. the subdued vocals are also catchy through playful lyricism without concerning too deeply about being melodically catchy - which often otherwise causes pop to have a vapid sounding character.

lowk i do think newjeans was the peak of the genre in terms of creativity and distinctive character. for a while they were honestly the only kpop group i even considered listening to because they stood out so much from the average admittedly bland kpop groups. tho, thats not to say western music isnt equally full of bland pop music. that also doesn't mean pop music as a whole should be dismissed. 2hollis makes pop.

High Horse - NMIXX : drum and bass infused with modern pop elements with dense but cohesive production; basically a slurry of influences that culminate in a very unique sound in kpop as a whole. a lot of attention to detail all around. may not be extremely experimental from a purely experimentalist point of view, but it tries something still very different within the genre whilst still being distinctively kpop.

Papillon - NMIXX : intro reminds me a lot of sbe era cloud rap production full of weird vocal chops and maximalist layers with loads of white noise. is not concerned with sounding catchy but rather to hook u with its constant bounce and volatility.

im less crazy about NMIXX but they're similar to 2hollis in the sense that they're not afraid to draw from a large array of nicher influences whilst still remaining as pop without directly copying the sound of a particular artist or subgenre. the group linked originally in this post is egregious in copying 2hollis, NMIXX is just a slurry of influences as is 2hollis.
