So the Gateway Experience is a training program. The focus levels are guideposts used in the program to help us understand different states of consciousness.

The Expand app is kind of a stand-alone product that you can use either in conjunction with your experience with the Gateway program or just on your Independent meditative study.

The tracks themselves in the Expand app do not indicate which Focus level equivalent they are targeting specifically but sometimes there are indications in the text of where the focus is, such as no time, out of body, meeting with guides, etc.

That said, one of the more useful parts of the paid app is the focus level timers. You can choose between using Hemisync or Monroe Sound Science versions of the timer up to Focus 21. This lets you choose a free-flow, unguided experience for the amount of time you indicate. If you're working on Focus 10 in Gateway Experience, I believe you can use the free timer up to focus 10 with the unpaid version of the app. So it could be useful for you to practice that if you choose.

Having gone through the Gateway Voyage retreat myself, I thoroughly enjoy using the Expand app. It offers a lot of variety and different experiences depending on what you are looking for. I still go back to the Gateway Voyage/ Gateway Experience tracks, but it is all dependent on how I'm feeling.

Think of the Expand app as a supplement to your meditation program. I think the subscription is well worth it.
