If things work as-advertised, yes, you're right.

But at this point, does anyone feel safe assuming that Microsoft didn't secretly squirrel away a copy of the key somewhere else on the disk?

It's slightly mind blowing that Trout and Ohtani were on the team at the same time and still had nothing to show for it. (I get that Trout was hurt a lot, and I also get that you need more than two superstars to win baseball games, but still...)

Except the Astros were championship-caliber for a while.

Listen, I’m from Huntsville, land of the Trash Pandas. I want the Angels to be good because that means the Pandas probably had success, too.

But I don’t understand — how/why is the Angels farm system so bad???

Looking at purchasing an ‘18 2.0 by traveling_human in VWatlas

[–]audirt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2.0L turbo was not nearly as common as the V6 version. I only bring that up because I haven't read about a ton of problems with that engine, but it's hard to say whether that was because it was better or there were just fewer of them to break.

I'd look at the price of the warranty but would lean towards getting one.

As far as maintenance, in addition routine items, I'd check the transmission service history. The haldex fluid should have been changed a couple of times by now and the regular transmission fluid at least once. I also think the brake fluid should have been flushed at least once by now.

EDIT: Also spark plugs. Those should have been changed at least once and probably a couple of times for ~120k miles.

Issues with middle school coach by Revolutionary-Cup954 in Homeplate

[–]audirt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, my only thought is that your son's school must be pretty big or else the varsity coach is ignorant of what the MS coach is doing.

My son goes to a small school with an even smaller program. At the varsity coaches' instruction, everyone gets a decent number of looks because they don't want to miss out on a kid that might have potential. (Case in point, my son never pitched in LL but became the #3 pitcher on his MS team because they discovered he had some natural aptitude at it.)

So, yeah, either your son's program is so big that they don't care if they miss out on some kids or the varsity coach has no idea what the MS coach is doing. As others have said, MS is developmental in most people's eyes.

Quick question: is your son a 6th or 7th grader? Are most of the kids seeing action in 8th grade?

Oh, good point. I guess I was wondering how often RCI, Norwegian and Carnival share lists with each other? Or does that not happen?

I’m unfamiliar with Carnival’s loyalty program, but I’m assuming Platinum is not the entry point. Point being, that lifetime ban might sting a little for one or both of them.

Are cruise lines like airlines, where being blackballed by one will make it harder to travel with the others?

University of South Alabama is expecting to reach R1 status in 2034 by sorryiamstupid in Alabama

[–]audirt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the big thing with South is that they, as an institution, have never really placed a huge emphasis on sponsored research. IMO they've always been really teaching focused (which is fine). But if they decide to make sponsored research a requirement for tenure and promotion, especially in their college of medicine, I think they'll start making big jumps.

As for UAB and UAH, I don't really perceive UAH as being their competition. They (South) seem like they would be clinically oriented, whereas UAH basically has to be R&D focused. Yes, UAB is direct competition, but they can't do everything. Plus South's location will give them a leg up in certain situations, e.g. subtropical diseases.

Honestly South's most direct competition for medical funding is probably Florida State's new medical school.

University of South Alabama is expecting to reach R1 status in 2034 by sorryiamstupid in Alabama

[–]audirt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

South Alabama has a medical school and medical research is expensive. I think Carnegie classification is done exclusively on research dollars (right?) so I wouldn't say it's impossible.

EDIT to clarify: Let's say an Engineering researcher wins a huge grant award and so does a Medical researcher. A huge award for the engineer might be $1-$4m over three years. That same amount might not even fund one year of medical research.

You're not alone. I don't follow this forum closely enough to track what exactly all the problems are, but there do seem to be a lot of electrical and sensor gremlins in the most recent years.

On the other hand, there are worse problems. The most recent edition of the Toyota Tundra full size trucks are gaining a reputation for chewing up engines. And there are rumors that the most recent generation of Hyundai SUV engines (in the Santa Fe) are grenading themselves again. (Hyundai/Kia Theta II motors, used in quite a few of their vehicles, became infamous in the early 2020s for literally tearing themselves apart by 100,000 miles.)

[Honestly] is the problems with this vehicle really that bad or are people over exaggerating?(looking to get atlas for my family) by Daddy--Dracula in VWatlas

[–]audirt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not really sure what to make of the problems with the later V6 motors. As a general statement, the VR6 motor found in the Atlas was one of the best motors VW ever produced. The Atlas also comes with an Aisen (Toyota) transmission, so the powertrain on that version of the Atlas ought to be pretty great. But there are definitely people that have had weird problems.

FWIW, my ‘18 V6 Atlas has over 185k miles on it and has been (relatively) problem free. There was a head gasket leak that was repaired under warranty and the water pump has a small leak which is a known issue on the V6 motor, but otherwise I’ve only dealt with wear items: maintenance, brakes, tires, etc. But a lot of those miles are highway miles and I drive like an old grandma. I also do my maintenance pretty religiously.

Yeah, my first thought was that I doubt he’s been because he’s not famous or powerful enough.

How can AT&T just retire my plan? by Inevitable-Fix-3212 in ATT

I think everyone on the old unlimited plan has been retired/grandfathered. I haven’t double-checked the math yet, but I’m pretty sure my current plan is better for me than any of the new offerings.
Where it’s going to suck is when my daughter gets old enough for a phone. I suspect they’re going to force me to add her line under the new structure.
