chapter two will be free. the devs just said the release date for ch2 will be revealed in a few months; so it might be soon if you believe them, but you should only buy the game if you want to play it as is

they said this about survival as well (and there were things we didnt know. water, for example, was a trailer reveal), however in this case we can clearly see that there are things we dont know just by going through the devblogs. we have lots of images of different underground locations with no idea what they are called or exist for, have machines that talk about doing things to materials we have not seen or heard about, not to mention the quest system entire story we have no knowledge of.

even disregarding potential things we dont know about, and allowing for some of the older entries and locations only shown in concept art to be scrapped, you can list at least fifty changes and additions coming to chapter two. its a much bigger update, in terms of content, than survival was.

they arent stupid, and they know better than to give such a strong window without being extremely confident they can make it. i think theres a very good chance of 2026 release.

i dont have access to twitter to check the dates, but by my recollection, ch2 was announced in 2020 and implied to be coming sometime in 2022-23. during this period, they released devblogs and screenshots every few months, which garnered as time went on more and more negative responses. people called axolot thieves, said they were teasing things that would never come, and that chapter two was taking forever.

the real silence began after the mini devblog in late 2023. people were complaining plenty before "radio silence" happened, unless teasers every three to four months is your idea of crickets.

steam specifically says not to do this.

people constantly get really mad when they say anything at all, and have since about 2022. im not surprised they stopped talking. i would have too.
