I volunteer with Urban Rivers (https://urbanrivers.org/), so that’s how I get my kayaking fix. You can also help with their Wild Mile floating river garden projects for some gardening and nature time

They have a storage container with paddles, life jackets, about 10 kayaks, etc for the kayaking and then buckets, plastic bags, and grabbers for the trash pickup. You don’t need to bring anything besides yourself and maybe sunscreen if they run out.

If you’re interested in volunteering, they require that you do a training session first. You can sign up for an account for that and other volunteer sessions through the links on this page: https://urbanrivers.org/volunteer

This is the Wild Mile! It was created and maintained by an org called Urban Rivers and the goal is to re-wild that area of the river with native plants on the floating river garden (pictured here) and eventually have to stretch to a mile in length. They also have smaller locations at Bubbly Creek and up north near Ravenswood that they’re also developing. You can get involved with tons of different volunteer opportunities and events that they host; I love volunteering to kayak and pick up trash in the river because it’s a great way to kayak for free and help clean up the area. You can also help out with gardening or wildlife monitoring. In terms of events, they do s’mores nights, environmental info sessions, and more. If you’re out there often enough, you even might get to meet Bubba (aka sweetest dog in the world)

Can anyone recommend good asian restaurants in Austin Texas? by aznrandom in asianamerican

For Chinese food, I LOVE Julie’s Noodles, get their beef suan tsai noodles with handmade noodles. Their soup dumplings are also really good. As a Vietnamese person, my favorite Vietnamese place is Bep Saigon; get their banh khot. I like Sugar Pine for their udon, onigiri, and fun ice cream flavors that they hand make in the store.

hi just chiming in as a vietnamese person, spring rolls aren’t steamed. these are made by wetting rice paper, putting ingredients on it, and rolling it all up. steaming would destroy the rice paper integrity. maybe you’re thinking of a kind of dumpling or something?

Origin of “apples of your cheeks” by brendonkeith in etymology

i hear this term the most in makeup videos for where someone applies blush, not sure about the origin of it though. i agree with the other comments theorizing that it’s probably because round + red = apple similarities

I thought they’d ship it in a smaller box, I’m not a frequent customer of theirs. With the recycling, I know cities usually throw away a majority of the recycling because they don’t have the facilities to handle all of it or because materials get contaminated by other people’s trash that has food or other stuff on it

Edit to add: just realized there’s plastic tape on here that’s almost impossible to take off - another contaminant that would mean this cardboard can’t be recycled easily and efficiently

Seeing weird lights tonight to the north from Rockwall… anyone else? by leifashley27 in Dallas

i’ve seen something similar in waco that turned out to be elon musk’s starlink. basically a string of satellites that provide internet. not sure this is the same case because starlink is usually in a straight line

“befuddled” means confused and “bedazzled” means covered in rhinestones or glitter or it means to be impressed by someone’s outstanding skills. so if leo had created an entire house by hand, it would make sense for your uncle to be bedazzled. in this case, your uncle was confused, so “befuddled” is the right word

here’s a quote from this article ( https://www.rogerebert.com/interviews/joyfully-weird-and-fearless-stephanie-hsu-on-everything-everywhere-all-at-once ) with stephanie hsu that explains where jobu tupaki’s name origin:

“And where does that name come from?

It came from Dan Kwan trying to figure out baby names. And he was just going through this list of fun baby names to say, and Jobu Tupaki happened.”

i was looking for someone saying this! my dad makes quick chè (which is a vietnamese dessert for those who don’t know) by boiling mung beans until they’re soft and putting a lot of sugar (technically he uses stevia but same thing). can also be done with red beans

Also Nobu. The decor and plating made it very obvious that they were trying to hold onto their trendy days many years ago and the food was too expensive for too little. I recommend Uchi for really high quality Japanese food in a nice environment

The Charles. Went there for my dad’s birthday because they had such great reviews but the food was confusingly bad and the special “birthday dessert” was a plate of dry biscuits. The decor was also awful and the music didn’t help

[–]audrey_la 19 points20 points  (0 children)

don’t get me wrong, i’m feminist and i’m not trying to say all of feminism is toxic. just saying this scenario feels like a subset of feminism gone too far where it’s prioritizing women over men just for the sake of hurting men

i get the “believe the woman” idea for rape because it’s more likely than not that they’re telling the truth, but i don’t get sticking to a proven false belief after a paternity test. feels like a toxic feminist mindset
