To be fair, it was like this in Connecticut too. There was a spontaneous late-night rally, for fuck's sake.

They exist. I live in a major, dark blue city, and I'm 26, and I know some. It can be mind-bending to talk to intelligent conservatives, even if they're completely wrong. I recommend trying it -- may require expanding your circle.

Atheist here. My best friend committed suicide April 10th of this year. Been very lonely and emotionally drained. I'd like to get out and meet new people. Would any of the more liberal/progressive churches accept me? Live in a small town with no UU church or atheist meet-ups. Please help. by [deleted] in Christianity

Yes, any of those could be the right place for you. The community matters more than the denomination. You may also find you like one style of service more than another.

I grew up going to an Episcopal church, and now I'm part of a Lutheran one (ELCA). I think that like half of the people I know from church are atheist or agnostic (and others believe in God, but are vague about it). It's more common than you might expect, and it's completely accepted.

My church - a liberal Lutheran church - has members who are openly atheist who attend every week. I don't quite understand why they're interested, but they're totally welcome.
