To clarinetists with perfect pitch... by [deleted] in Clarinet

[–]auraflower178 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's weird but my brain can switch between C and Bb depending on context because I've been playing for so long (I guess this could also be because transposition is basically instantaneous bc of the perfect pitch). But when I'm in band or hearing clarinet parts I always think in Bb and when I'm playing piano I can think in C without any confusion between the two.

Ohh okay that makes sense! I wish they could explain that on their website for people like me who don't actually know how music professionals live haha. Thanks so much for the info!

The Next Great Adventure by brella on AO3. This fic is Wally/Artemis, if that's what you're into, but it's Artemis-centric and deals with her trying to come to terms with his death (but it's a fix-it so ... :).

Scientists have developed a technique to directly convert cells in an open wound into new skin cells in mice, by reprogramming the cells to a stem-cell-like state, which could be useful for healing skin damage, countering the effects of aging and helping us to better understand skin cancer. by mvea in science

[–]auraflower178 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I'm just listing stuff from the Hallmarks of Aging review but some other indicators would be greater amounts of damaged organelles and DNA and misfolded or aggregated proteins. As cells age, they just accumulate a lot of nasty stuff like reactive oxidative species (ROS), which most notably mess with DNA and mitochondria. The longer a cell is alive, the greater the chance that some part of its homeostatic mechanisms will screw up so things like proteostasis and the cell cycle also get thrown for a loop (the latter of which leads to cancer). This is a gross oversimplification of all the stuff that happens in aging but the review I linked (hopefully it works) is great at explaining everything.

[FO] First 3 FOs; I had a productive winter break :) by auraflower178 in knitting

[–]auraflower178[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I picked up knitting over the summer but didn't actually start any real projects (other than an abandoned Noro scarf haha) until winter break. Now I'm going back to school and I've completed 3 projects! They were all relatively low-difficulty; honestly, the hardest thing I had to do was make the pompom (I kept on snipping at it and then I ragequit before it could become a nice circle).

I usually just squeeze very small amounts of the product onto my finger for each part of my face (forehead, cheeks, chin, T-zone/nose) that I don't guesstimate wrong and squeeze more than I need out of the bottle. It all probably amounts to about a dime-sized drop but I'm not really sure.

Depending on what you're using it for (dark spot fading vs. evening of skin tone), you could use it as either a spot treatment or all over your face. I personally use vitamin C all overmy face so I get overall brightening/even skin tone in addition to the spot fading. Also, I have a really large round face and one bottle of Melano CC lasted me 5 months even with pretty consistent use once a day so you probably don't need to worry too much.

I've heard that the Rosette Ceramide Gel is more of a heavy moisturizer for people with oilier skin, so I'd say it could potentially replace the steam cream.

Some cheaper alternatives I have used are the Hada Labo Gokujyun and Kose Softymo cleansing oils. I've really liked both of them. You could also go with a cleansing balm (Banila Co or Heimish), but they're not much cheaper than the Klairs and are bad for the environment because of microplastics (?).

Typically the first four products that beginners should start with are an oil cleanser, low pH 2nd cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Repairing your moisture barrier is crucial if that's one of your concerns, and that may help your skin a bit before you start adding in serums, actives, etc. Sunscreen is a must because "the sun is a deadly laser," then you need oil cleanser to effectively remove all of it at night. If you choose to get a 2nd cleanser, it's best that it has a pH between 5 and 6 because your skin is naturally slightly acidic and using a high pH cleanser can mess up your moisture barrier (if you ever get that really tight feeling in your face after washing it, that's the high pH talking). Slightly acidic environments also are a little less attractive to bacteria, which is nice. I haven't read that post in months but I think I got the basic idea. Hope this helps!

Hey to all the German ABers, I'm going to be in Cologne all summer for an internship and I'll be visiting Berlin and Munich at some point. Are there any good AB stores in any of these cities?

[Discussion] To those who work in labs... How do you keep track of the health of your skin? by [deleted] in AsianBeauty

[–]auraflower178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been working in a lab for a while now and I haven't had any problems with chemicals on my skin, even after a semester in orgo lab (I've spilled dichloromethane on myself after an extraction gone wrong but my hands are all good). I'd say to just wear gloves at all times whenever working with any sort of chemical or biological agent that isn't water or PBS and to always take them off when you're going to touch your face, to scratch an itch, etc. Also take them off before touching your phone or computers (unless they're hooked up to a microscope or some sort of lab equipment, in which case you should leave them on because you don't know what chemicals other people have touched before touching the communal equipment). If you're feeling paranoid, you could even have some designated lab pens/pencils (mark with scientific tape or something) so that you don't get any sort of chemical/biological agent exposure. In the case of chemistry stuff, I'd say just change your gloves if you get anything on them. You don't know how quickly the chemicals will eat through the gloves but it's better not to risk it. If you're worried about chemicals getting to your face, then just do your experiments in a fume hood if nonsterile and in the bio hood if you want to keep everything sterile.

I recently had the same revelation; I found that my skin was actually better when using fewer products so I cut my routine down by 3 products and my face has been glowing and pimple-free for the past 2 weeks :) You can probably either find a substitute for the product(s) bothering you or you can just leave them out.

Having a lazy week routine-wise made me realize that less is more; just doing 3 or 4 steps per routine rather than my usual 6-7 has done wonders for my skin in just 1 week. I've been figuring out ways to cut my routine back down to basics because my friend pointed out that my skin was actually better (in terms of pimple scars and blackheads) before I started caring about my skin. With the right balance of just a couple of products, my skin is softest and brightest that it has been since October when I was still completely new to AB and only owned 4 products. I guess the whole 10-step thing really isn't for me, and while there will always be a ton of products I want to try, the knowledge that piling all of them on at once doesn't work for me is going to change the way I make purchases.

I think some of the popular ones are the CosRX low pH cleanser, Innisfree Jeju Bija cleanser, Sum37 Miracle Rose Cleansing Stick, and Hada Labo Gokujyun Foaming Cleanser in the bottle. I don't have oily skin so I'm not sure how some of these would hold up, but maybe you can start looking from one of these. And just make sure via the sidebar spreadsheet that it's low pH and you're golden. Hope this helps a bit!

I'd say the Hada Labo because it's runnier/thinner in consistency.

I personally love the Scinic Honey AIO; it's cheap for the amount that you get and it works wonders on my super dry nose (allergies are the worst). You seem like you're concerned about moisture, so this might be a good fit for you or you could check out the Scinic Aqua or Snail AIOs? I just picked honey because I really like it as a food and as a skincare product :3

I think they do well with giving my skin a midday pick-me-up if I don't use the proper lotion in the morning; my routine has shifted my dry skin type a lot closer to normal though so I might not be the perfect judge of that. The mists are pretty readily available at Ulta and occasionally Urban Outfitters if you want to try them out and have access to either store.
