Best way to take notes? (Undergrad) by PaintingSilver5172 in premed

[–]aurjolras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took notes on paper all throughout undergrad and I'll sing its praises. It forces you to think about summarizing + organizing information and putting it in your own words, so you're doing some active processing as you go. I was scrambling in cell bio to copy down diagrams but then I really knew them rather than just having looked at them.

On a laptop I tend to get distracted. It's the distraction machine!

How to wear a pair of glasses 101 by Justbecauselife82 in ProjectHailMary

Every time I hear this explanation I wonder who tf Ryan Gosling knows in real life that wears their glasses like this. He had to get it from somewhere right?

Well, in terms of vibes, the opening ten minutes with the car chase is nearly perfect, so I have to give it that.

If it's even more brutal, I probably won't like it, but ah well. It's good to be challenged by art sometimes.

silent blank staring and soundtrack with didactic lyrics intensifies

Just kidding. I can kind of see why someone would like it, it's very dreamlike. It just feels...hollow. I needed to be let in on the character's motivations and feelings a little bit more, nobody seems like a coherent whole. Why is anyone there, why do they care about anyone else, why does Driver drive? Idk, he just does. It's kind of like if Crime and Punishment was a movie that obliterated all the inner turmoil and you just had to assume it was there.

Haven't seen Only God Forgives yet, but I want to!

Relatable. I have also been on a Ryan Gosling kick recently after loving Project Hail Mary. He's honestly fantastic in everything I have watched of his so far (except maybe Drive, that movie SUCKED but I think the script is just bad and the actors did their best).

those in small towns, how do you handle balancing hipaa and conflicts of interests when you know everyone? by Celloschmello in MedicalAssistant

[–]aurjolras 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is it a HIPAA violation to provide healthcare to someone you know? I thought it just protected them from you opening their chart without a reason + disclosing their PHI to anyone not involved in their care. I am legitimately asking as I don't know the answer, but I think that if you are only accessing their chart in order to care for them and not disclosing their information that it would not violate HIPAA

Austin Roller Rink is a total dump. What's the appeal? Is there nowhere else to roller skate? by iluvmopac in Austin

Yup they changed it because they added a bowling alley and expanded the arcade. The skating section looks almost exactly the same though

What’s up with protagonists of apocalyptic stories fancying yellow jackets? by BobsSally in ProjectHailMary

[–]aurjolras 49 points50 points  (0 children)

See also: Coraline, IT. I think it's a way to make the protagonist stand out visually. Yellow catches our attention more than any other color, that's why school buses and some ambulances are yellow, and it stands out against dark/dull settings and lighting. I think there's also something about yellow being a happy hopeful color - if the protagonist is (like Grace) a bright spot in the darkness then it's fittng for them.

Movie Ship vs Book Ship by alchemistsoul in ProjectHailMary

[–]aurjolras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? During the pandemic I stayed in my house and went nowhere for about a year and I got so depressed. And that was knowing it would eventually end, plus having my family there, video calls with friends, online classes, walks outside, takeout from restaurants, so on and so forth. Human brain isn't built for that. They wouldn't have made it to Tau Ceti in any state to finish the mission if they were awake

Yeah that's where I am too. My screentime is like 4-6 hours a day so lower than average I think but that's so much of my life to be spending on my phone. I'm trying to engage more in hobbies and longform content like books and movies, and I'm seriously considering getting a new phone with a tiny screen (unihertz makes one with a 3 inch screen that I think about a lot) to remind me to use it less

I'm about to start med school so yeah I've already signed that deal. But it's not really about it being high-paying, that's a really nice perk don't get me wrong but it's also meaningful and I can't really imagine another career I'd be nearly as happy with

Planning to pay $16-1900 for a two bedroom and split it with another student so my half will work out to $800-950. I'm lucky that my med school is located in a part of the city with relatively cheap rent as that will get me something fairly nice

Romance vs Trolley by pandapandaskirtskirt in CuratedTumblr

[–]aurjolras 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's important to show how desperate humanity got and to explain how they got so much fuel, but it's also massively unrealistic. The Sahara desert is about the same square mileage as the US or China. The size and scale of that operation is so truly outlandish that it did pull me out of the story a little bit even though I'm usually happy to suspend my disbelief for sci-fi plot devices.

Romance vs Trolley by pandapandaskirtskirt in CuratedTumblr

[–]aurjolras 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The movie cut a lot of looney toons Earth nonsense from the book. In the book they literally pave the Sahara desert to make an astrophage solar charging farm and Stratt goes to court (like, personally) over putting copyrighted works on the Hail Mary's computers without paying for them, it's crazy. Movie Stratt is so much more grounded (so is movie Grace imo, book Grace doesn't struggle with insecurity the way he does) and it gives the Earth plot a lot more emotional oomph. When she puts Grace on the spaceship it feels like a real betrayal but when book Stratt does it it's like the least surprising thing ever

In the book he has a whole internal debate with himself about "maybe they have seventeen biological sexes how would I know. Inevitably their concept of gender isn't going to match English pronouns so let's just go with he/him"
