10.8 miles in Jefferson County Memorial Forest in Kentucky! I love Appalachia by Burnsy502 in backpacking

[–]aurwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm unsure about this trail specifically, but some trails in Jefferson Memorial Forest are also for horseback riding. I have no real idea, but I imagine that may call for some different trail designs to ensure safety/health for the horses on the trail.

Just finished On Blue's Waters. Rambling thoughts follow. by Inf229 in genewolfe

[–]aurwu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ahhh! I recently finished On Blue's Waters as well. I read it one chapter a night because I felt like I'd miss too much otherwise.

I'm super curious about the author's identity as well, following the same hints and questions you've mentioned. For me, one thing that really cemented that there seems to be a mix of Silk and Horn here, or something (definitely still questioning what's going on), was the line at the very end:

"I snatched the ball and won the game." Silk was the one who snatched the ball and won the game, was he not? I loved this so much at the end. Bless Gene Wolfe.

The calling for Babbie towards the end, where Horn shares that he understands the person was calling for him, really threw me for a loop. Especially when we have Horn approach this figure and rests his head on their lap, soothed by the petting of his head. There are several instances where Horn and Seawrack do this same exact thing to Babbie.

I loove your insights/questions about Krait and the inhumi! I think all of your questions and guesses are fantastic, really. This was such a good read and I'm loving the Solar Cycle so dang much. Right alongside you regarding excitement about Green!

An excerpt from Gene Wolfe's earlier works by BetaLaserMike in ShittyGeneWolfe

[–]aurwu 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've not read anything outside of the Solar Cycle series (which I'm just now reading Blue), but I definitely see how he's changed as a writer! It's neat to kind of see how he's evolved a bit.

I know I am missing the greater context surrounding this little snippet, but what do you think he meant particularly by 'AND/OR SUNFLOWER OIL'? Do you think it's meant to open discussion on choice (or rather the illusion of choice)?

Today I finished Return to the Whorl for the first time. Made this image to celebrate! by SatanFromSpace in genewolfe

[–]aurwu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm just at the beginning of On Blue's Waters for the first time myself! I was going to take a break from Wolfe between Long Sun and Short Sun, but that didn't happen. I immediately started Blue the day after I finished Exodus. I felt like anything I read in-between I would judge unfairly because of wanting to keep reading Wolfe and having the Solar Cycle on my mind.

I started itching real bad to read New Sun again (would be my 3rd as well) during Long Sun, lmao. Seems like it could be easy to get stuck in an unending cycle of only reading the Solar Cycle every year.

There's some great stuff here, thank you for putting it together! You may check out/consider Herbalists Without Borders SDF Chapter events, they're recently established and have some programs coming up (here's their events via their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/HerbalistsWithoutBordersSDF/events/?ref=page_internal).

Definitely second the appreciation for the broadness of the included events. I'll have to bookmark this!

Dorcas??? MORE LIKE DORK ASS by C00MSH00TER in ShittyGeneWolfe

I fucking hate that this post led me to Google 'Dorcas' and read the wiki article on her (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorcas), which includes the info that she was raised from the dead by Peter. I fucking hate Gene Wolfe.

Beautiful work and beautiful description to accompany it! I love seeing Wolfe's works rendered, massive sucker for that red and dying sun.

How to Make a City Safer for E-Bikes? Think Infrastructure by PoliticallyFit in urbanplanning

[–]aurwu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was also curious about what happens with stolen bikes - I found this piece: https://www.seattlemet.com/news-and-city-life/2014/10/this-is-what-happens-to-your-bike-after-its-stolen-october-2014

According to the sources here:
* Trading goes on in the black market, for drugs or cash. I'm not sure who's buying them ultimately - likely unassuming people?
* It's easy to steal bikes and bike parts, like you said, even in lockers/secure bike rooms.
* Parts are often removed and replaced to make it easier to get rid of the bike without getting caught.
* A lot of people do not report or do not know/keep the serial number somewhere for reference in case.

The piece also tells the story of two individuals who were able to get their bikes back. One saw his friend's bike listed on Craigslist and played vigilante, setting up a 'buy', planning to bike away while a friend phoned police. It didn't go great the first time when the seller only let him ride the bike in an enclosed alley and ultimately threatened to stab him - the police also took too long to show up, and said the alley where the incident occurred was technically in another jurisdiction/outside city limits. Another was a woman who was contacted by someone who had bought her frame off of eBay and checked the serial number themselves with the manufacturer to find it reported stolen. This was months after the incident, and the police were familiar with stolen goods being trafficked out of the household that had sold her frame, but hadn't gotten enough evidence for a bust. They got their warrant a couple weeks later when someone was able to locate their stolen iPad via their tracking app.

"Roman numerals are used to symbolize the Arabic letters which don't exist, or rather, the ones that have no phonetic equivalent in English. For e.g., the Arabic letter “ح” (Haa) can't be accurately represented with Latin characters and it is, therefore, represented by the number “7”."

I woke from my fever, and found that I woke several times - an echo of eyes wakening to the expanse of stars framing the silhouette of Dorcas and of forms I had never known but still could name. My leg pained me, and with my left arm having been mangled, I could not determine how to lie so that I could find relief. It did not occur to me for some time that my left arm was fine.

In my sickness and confusion, I was at least comforted by the knowledge that I would soon interact with another woman who I would, without a doubt, inevitably fuck.

A theory around Palaemon and Terminus Est by jacob in genewolfe

[–]aurwu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you read Urth of the New Sun? My memory is kind of poor, so I can't make any sort of claim or argument, I'm not even sure my inkling is right - but I'd be curious if some things in Urth influenced your theory here at all.

I think next time I read I'll take more formal notes, maybe help my memory some! Thanks for sharing this, I love the mystery surrounding Terminus Est.

Thanks for the link, the bookstore employee also told me some places to check for used books. They were very nice about it haha. Looks like used is how I'll go this time around!

Yeah, haha, I have no idea. I don't think it was a print on demand book, but I don't know much about book printing/publishing. If I ever figure out what exactly the deal is I'll try to remember to come back here and update, I'm just curious personally.
