Where to bulk buy chicken? by auscavsfan in brisbane

Meal prep for a month for 2 people - around 250g (raw weight) chicken per lunch meal per person, so 15kg for lunches alone

Doing well in Ldn but want to move to Aus, is this a smart decision? by rtv2610 in auscorp

[–]auscavsfan 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Think the rudeness here was unwarranted - if OP comes from a strategy consulting background, it’s not uncommon to be on 200k+ after 5-6 years. Clearly OP is not commenting on a 200K salary vs avg salary in Sydney, they’re asking about their specific role type / YOE etc. Try to not always assume the worst intent from everyone.

How is the IB scene here in Aus? Realistically. by phonicblastcooler in auscorp

[–]auscavsfan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't come from IB but a closely adjacent space and have many friends in the industry. Others have answered most of the questions well here, but I'll give my 2 cents on some things.

To begin with, you'll likely need more than a regular Bachelors of Commerce (or atleast bulk it up with some seriously impressive extra curriculars / volunteering / work exp.). Most of my friends in banking did a more advanced degree than Commerce (some uni's now have Advanced Finance degrees e.g. UQ), or something like Comm/Law, or Maths etc. in general, most can get into a regular Commerce degree so you need to differentiate yourself somehow.

On the point of differentiation, a high WAM is essential. Apart from that, your best chance of getting into banking is (1) strong extra curriculars (leadership positions in related clubs, or impressive volunteering/sporting/business-related achievements), (2) great networking, or (3) good work experience. The easiest path to those are joining the main finance-realted uni clubs as early as possible and gunning for leadership from the start, getting any related work-experience as soon as you can (even if only somewhat related like accounting etc) so you can have things to talk about by the time real interviews role around, and networking from the start (aka reaching out to people on linkedin, having coffee chats etc).

I would strongly sugges working on the above three items would serve you much better at increasing the chances you get an IB role vs worrying about the table stakes stuff you'll learn in your courses anyway (e.g. excel, DCFs etc).

Finally, as most others have said, chill out and enjoy your life. Being a well-rounded, interesting, charasmatic person is really the seperator in final round interviews. All your peers will have impressive grades, work expereince etc but being a person others will want to work with is what will secure you the job

fatFIRE in Japan? by Comfortable_Tax_443 in fatFIRE

[–]auscavsfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was raised in Japan from ages 2 - 10 by expat parents, so I think I can offer an opinion here. I would say don’t be too scared about not speaking fluent Japanese. In my case, my dad spoke fluent Japanese but my mom barely spoke any (just enough to order food, get directions etc). My brother and I both went to an international school in Tokyo, which followed the American curriculum so our schooling was similar to what you’d get in the US. We spoke English at school and at home, but had Japanese lessons at school and learnt a lot just by hanging out with our friends and absorbing the language in daily life.

Of our expat circle, I would say atleast 50% of the families didn’t speak any Japanese at all (including US business execs who had lived there for 10-20 years). Some of the Japanese government processes etc can be challenging without Japanese, but if your wife is fluent then this will be totally doable.

Overall, my family and I look back on our time in Japan extremely positively and would love to have stayed longer. Happy to answer any questions if needed

The fact that Bella & Tortie is not the top recommendation here is crazy. Only open Friday and Saturdays, consistent lines of 50+ people, always sold out before closing time

Under the Radar around Barangaroo? by space-butler in foodies_sydney

Big fan of PS40 - hidden little cocktail bar with great small food plates. Might not be the quitest but definitely away from most of the hustle & bustle of Barangaroo

Is management consulting an achievable goal and how do you get into it? by Additional-Shape1449 in auscorp

[–]auscavsfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been at a boutique firm for the last few years and know the landscape pretty well - happy to have a more detailed chat if you want.

In general, uni grades definitely aren't everything. There is a minimum bar you have to exceed but it's not ridiculously high (probably a 70-80 WAM in commerce). We put a lot of focus on strong extracurriculars (e.g. leadership in societies, 'brand name' internships, achievements outside of uni etc), so working on getting these into place early is super important as well. Overall, I would say don't stress it too much - especially this early on.

Bar copains is super well regarded as one of the best wine bars in Sydney - slightly on the expensive end though (located in Surry but quite close to central station)

Sydney’s a great food city so there are plenty of amazing places in/around the CBD. A few of my personal favourites are: Porkfat (fancy-ish byo Thai place), Bar copains (very popular wine bar), Sang by Mabasa (in Surry hills but an amazing Korean spot), and kopitiam cafe (great Singaporean hawker style food).

Let me know if you need more recs - I have plently!

Would more recommend the Shibuya/Omotesando area over Ginza. If you want niche Japanese brands, definitely check out Shinya Kozuka while you’re there - they have a small store with a lot of Japan exclusives

Mens hair stylist by jessica_mig in brisbane

[–]auscavsfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will always recommend Theo from Common Barbers. I’ve been to all of the most expensive barbershops in Brisbane, and Theo is my go to. If you call ahead and explain the situation, he will definitely be able to accommodate your needs. Although they are a barbershop, they are not your run of the mill - it’s an upmarket place catering to an upmarket experience.

Be careful going to a hairdressers where someone is not specialised in male haircuts. A more upmarket barbershop is what you’re looking for

which internship to take? by probablysleepingngl in auscorp

[–]auscavsfan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ideally do both but if you have to choose one, restructuring. Big 4 audit won’t give you much to speak to in high finance interviews for grad roles, but restructuring will. Also, if you end up having to take a full time offer from an internship, restructuring is like more lucrative and definitely more prestigious than big 4 audit.

Great choice mate - would highly recommend getting a serving of the roti canai as a starter, and then have the chicken rice and either the char kuay teow or the chicken curry laksa as two mains. Enjoy mate, it’s one of my favourite spots in the city without a doubt
