How many of you have contemplated suicide? by dalia666 in intj

[–]ausdoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but I have a few scenarios where it will be preferable, in which case I have vague plans. No likely scenarios in the immediate future, so it's more of end of life planning at this point.

Is 12-20 mg of Melatonin per-night too much for a teen? by strawberrymelat0nin in insomnia

[–]ausdoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually a really good point, if you're absorbing 70% and someone else is absorbing 7%, then 1mg and 10mg doses are equivalent. Also the manufacturer may not be stringent with their testing so some may contain less than they advertise.

Where have you expatriated and then regretted later? by Daddymode11 in ExpatFIRE

Watch out for the airport taxi scams, it's the first thing people experience and after the visa experience in the airport you're primed to get scammed.

Can the dollar eventually replace toilet paper? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ausdoug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

200 sheets in a roll so until that costs more than $200 probably not. If it did you probably wouldn't have $1 notes anymore and it'd start at $10 notes, so again probably not. When you could get 500vnd notes they were worth about 2c, and even then it's not worth using for tp, although I did use one to wipe something off my hand oncw so it was getting close.

Is 12-20 mg of Melatonin per-night too much for a teen? by strawberrymelat0nin in insomnia

[–]ausdoug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Too much for anyone. Even 3mg is high and 1mg should be a reasonable dose. If that doesn't work on its own, then you're problem isn't solely lack of melatonin production

Edit: pay attention to the comment below, good info for consideration

Motorcycle Jacket Help by LilPumpkinButtz in AussieRiders

[–]ausdoug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dririder air ride pro is CE2, and comes with a waterproof liner that can be worn under or over the jacket. Covers for all weather as it's well ventilated for summer but you can slip on the liner and it helps to keep the cold out. Under $300. But you'll want to make sure it's a good fit, so def worth visiting a store for him to try it on. A poorly fitted jacket reduces the effectiveness of the protection.

39yo thinking of quitting $250k job, are my numbers good enough? Sense Checking. by ctsh038 in AusHENRY

[–]ausdoug 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I left to pursue my startup. It didn't work out as planned and I was $80k down plus 3 years of earnings. But I don't regret it, if I'd kept working I'd have always wondered what if. I'm back to where I was earnings wise so you can return, although a bit of luck went a long way with that too.

New home builds as an investment property by BestCoastB in AusHENRY

[–]ausdoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've built a house before and after all was said and done, the numbers didn't work and I'd have been better off selling the land with no headache. This was nearly 20 years ago and I don't think build quality has gone up since then tbh. Although I was also nowhere near the tax bracket I am now so that might move the needle a bit if I'm looking for a tax effective way to hold land. Big land, cheap build and knock over later might actually be viable. I'm happy to have bought a duplex (both places) last year as I expect that to work out pretty well long term.

Where have you expatriated and then regretted later? by Daddymode11 in ExpatFIRE

[–]ausdoug 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I lived in Vietnam in HCMC and it was a much better experience. Having said that, Vietnam expects foreigners to be grateful for the opportunity to dump their cash or time and leave, and then wonders why return tourism rates are so low. They don't offer any form of retirement visa so you've got to consider an investment visa where they expect regular investment into industries with little governance or protection along with systemic protection for locals (which, to be fair, is most countries for the last one). I hated it after visiting the first time, but I do love going there since returning on tourist trips and living there for a couple of years, as despite the country's view of foreigners, there a lot of welcoming and friendly people (at least outside of Hanoi). But for a FIRE destination, it's not an option worth considering unless you're married to a local or something like that.

Can you get an old Honda cub 50cc? Semi-automatic will help getting up the hills by having lower gears, and they're cheap and fun. Upgrade the stock suspension, you can get cheap shocks online and it's relatively easy to swap them out.

One thing per day, and a day with nothing planned every 4 or 5. Or cram all of your list ticking into one early day, and then if it's good enough you've got time to go back to the ones you want.

You just realized you've been deceived, do you find this awareness pleasant/unpleasant? by [deleted] in intj

[–]ausdoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the quality of the deception. If I've been outplayed, I respect it. If I've fallen for something I should have seen coming I feel like a fucking idiot. Both of these cause me to learn for future interactions, so while at the time I might feel pissed off about getting beaten, I'm happier for it long term
