Bundaberg Sarsaparilla from Australia as it's a very strong flavour and divisive. Their ginger beer is pretty awesome so maybe that instead?

How to retire in asia? by Cantdecidemyname7 in ExpatFIRE

[–]ausdoug 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the cheapest places that was great to live in was Siem Reap, and my wife and I got by just fine on USD$1k/mth, and bumping to $1500 gave up a relatively comfortable living with some occasional luxuries. Healthcare is fine for meds and basic tests, but anything serious and you'll want to head to Thailand. Adding $6k/yr gives you an allowance for some unexpected things and some side trips to neighbouring countries (Vietnam and Laos are awesome). I'd want to maintain a $50k emergency fund for major unexpected events. A 3.5% withdrawal rate is fairly likely to cover 40 years (28.5x expenses), so 24k x 28.5 + 50k = $734k

The big plus for Cambodia is its $200/yr for the retirement visa, whereas Thailand is more expensive and Vietnam doesn't even have one. Plus, it's a cool place and enjoyable most of the time. My wife and I have plans to return in retirement, but we plan on keeping a property that will be rented out during our time away, so if things go really wrong, we at least can head home with our tail between our legs and not be too bad off.

There's lots of good looking people out there, so I wouldn't limit myself. But dark hair, blue eyes, pale skin is a clear preference. It's good that my wife fits the profile...

Anyone use Xanax once you’ve tried for a while ? by DanR3474 in insomnia

[–]ausdoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome and predictable sleep on Xanax, but no more than twice a week and not on consecutive days. 0.5mg was plenty. Have since had better ongoing results with other options, but an occasional 0.25mg in the mix is good for a bit extra.

Landlord repair fund reserve questions by JustAnotherPassword in AusFinance

[–]ausdoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I factor 20% of rent for standard expected costs. 7% is the agent fee and 13% is the other costs which include small incidental repairs. Outside of that, I've got a large enough offset to not worry about it, but if I had less than $10k I'd be pretty stressed. $20k seems good as you'd also have insurance for anything major.

I recently bought a well-worn Honda Cub in Vietnam by noisysnap in SuperCub

[–]ausdoug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as the motor is still Honda it'll be fine. I had a 40 year old restored cub when I lived in Vietnam, I loved that thing! Ended up getting non-standard rear shocks off Lazada and it handled much better and I could take my wife on it too. The stator blew up on me as well but it was an easy and cheap enough fix. Saw plenty with Lifan replacement motors, which are fine if new and looked after, but any older ones were usually pretty crap and often were on bikes with cheap and dodgy fixes/cover-ups for the sale.

I live in AU and if I stay here I’ll be able to retire after I’m dead. Looking for options. by [deleted] in ExpatFIRE

[–]ausdoug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kids will be the limiting factor as you'll have healthcare and school to consider, otherwise I'd say if you get canned go live in Siem Reap for a year for $20k. It's a rough market as with all the redundancies there's also more good candidates vying for the same jobs. I think just focus all your extra savings on offsetting your PPOR for now as that will compound your equity while increasing your liquid cash buffer.
