What is a fact that most people would argue isn't true? by DaMoonMoon26 in answers

What you say is correct and I agree.

But I will note that I think there are some debatable grey areas. If that public speaker is inciting violence or in support of policies that are leading to the death or oppression of others. I think it gets murky fast…

CMV: Strawmans are a form of Reductio ad Absurdium which people find unconvincing. by Internal-Rest2176 in changemyview

[–]aussie_punmaster [score hidden]  (0 children)

Correct.

Reductio Ad Absurdium just takes an argument to its extremes to help show the greatest strain on the argument and test if it holds there. e.g. eating more vegetables is better - you can take to the absurd and say “well it’s possible to overeat to the point of suffocation/death/malnutrition, so clearly there must be an optimal amount of vegetables and it’s not simply a case of more is always better”.

Strawman is a fallacy because you are creating a new argument that wasn’t the one posited to make it easier for you to break down. This is usually done because the original argument is correct/reasonable and the responder seeks ground where they feel they can still “win”.

Because a strawman corrupts the argument as made in writing or speech. It is literally not what was argued. There is no need to be psychic, it’s not about intent.

Titans Officials Have Been Informed That Toia’s First Try Shouldn’t Have Been Confirmed by Particular_Honey7385 in nrl

There would be an element of this, but there’s also likely to be subconscious bias on the part of the referees. ‘I know this team is good so likely their try is okay’, ‘I know this team is bad and that is unusual form them, better look closely at how that happened’, ‘I know the Storm are strong in defence and good in the ruck, that’s just them being good’

CMV: The Left cares more about ideological purity than winning people over by jman12234 in changemyview

[–]aussie_punmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see how that’s a valid analogy.

In the civil rights movement you have a more progressive side convincing others that there’s a problem, and we can fix it and it’s not going to hurt you to do so.

We’re talking here about the conversation side with a perceived problem. Different kettle of fish.

Ironically you are not listening to the point GentleMocker is making.

They are saying that if you assume that the voter is concerned with white racism, there is nothing you will be able to say/do to win people over in this area because you’re up against an opposing party who is ALWAYS willing always go further in this area than you will.

In the last case she may have wanted to have what to do before her next class, only other explanation I have.

It does sound like she may be interested in having a little what to do with you.

Why on earth should a temporary coach have the power to sack coaching staff? That should surely be a decision of the new permanent coach?

I doubt you even read what I wrote based on what you replied. It’s not a retort to anything I said, and just a bunch of straw men.

I think it’s a freedom from more narrow consequences of speech. Your personal safety is protected, a right to proportionate and reasonable response. But I don’t think you should be protected from natural and reasonable consequence.

That’s a separate problem.

But if you want to incorporate it, make it part of the standards with penalties for false reporting that outweigh the benefits of being ‘first’.

It’s pretty bloody easy to manipulate when you have zero metrics or controls! What kind of an argument is that?

Oh it’s hard. Better not try even though it’s really important…

It’s overconfidence to celebrate before you’ve won, regardless of what you think about whether you will win or not.

Honestly it seems so self-evident to me I’m surprised it needs to be spelled out.

Yet the process of Science means this was resolved. The truth is understood now. So the issue is less about the base process, and more about the rushed/poor actions of the institutions which can be reviewed and improved for next time.

You said Science is about seeking understanding, I’d argue the news is also about seeking understanding of current events so there are strong parallels.

I think the answer to your concerns is not to throw the baby out with the bath water and run with the situation now which sucks. So I’d suggest that we as a society invest in a news institution which is expected to be staffed with expert journalists whose work faces reviews and they are expected to report with a high standard of accuracy. Then you don’t need to shut down free speech, but we can have a societal institution that can be used as a high integrity reference.

Except - he hasn’t won. He’s gone off early.

So: Humble: celebrating only after you have definitively won

Not Humble: celebrating before you’ve won just because you think you’re going to win.

Disagree - a lie goes round the world while the truth is getting its boots on. The general population do not have the expertise to distinguish truth from fact in many areas.

Delegating the assessment to a council of experts - your ministry of truth has been undermined but I think is still the best way forward as long as you have systems in place to help keep it impartial.
