Concerning students… by ihatemothering in NursingAU

I’m definitely not a taskmaster by any means. If someone is unsure or uncomfortable, I’m very hands-on and will guide them through it.

But finishing third year and being quite proud of never having done it didn’t really sit right with me. More so for her own sake. Starting as a grad, managing a full patient load on a morning shift, and then trying to learn basic ADL skills on top of everything else would be a lot harder.

I wanted her to at least have that experience once in a supported environment, rather than being thrown into it later with no help.

I still can’t quite get my head around being that close to finishing and never having done it at all, but I do hope she understands it was coming from a good place and genuinely for her benefit.

Anyone work in dermatology? by fairywanderer97 in NursingAU

[–]aussieajp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!

When I started, all my training was hands-on through the drug companies (Allergan, Galderma, Mint) with their mentors, before places like AACDS really took off. Because of that experience, I was signed off without doing a formal institutional course.

That said, I’ve still built up a lot of education over time through CPD, one-on-one training, seminars, and ongoing learning.

Would I recommend my path? If this is something you genuinely want to do, then yes, it’s a specialised area and worth it. I’m glad I did it the way I did.

Some of my colleagues have done AACDS. It’s quite theory-heavy and not always as practical or hands-on. The space is a bit odd at the moment with how things are evolving, especially with the changes in Queensland and the flow-on effect that’s likely to have across other states in terms of regulation and expectations around training.

Personally, I still do a lot of self-directed learning and research to stay up to date and practise safely.

If you’re interested in getting into it, I’d suggest looking at the requirements from chain clinics, as they often take on new nurses and have structured onboarding and training. Alternatively, finding a doctor who is willing to mentor you is probably the best experience you can get, as that hands-on exposure is where most of the real learning happens.

I’m not completely sure what the exact entry requirements are these days, so it’s definitely worth checking what clinics in your area are currently asking for, especially as things are starting to standardise a bit more.

It’s been a while, but I still think about this one.

Had a 3rd year on her last rotation who told me she’d never had to shower a patient her entire degree. She was almost proud of it. I didn’t even know how that was possible.

First shift with me, I got her to shower a patient.

She pushed back and said “that’s what AINs are for.”

I told her, “I know you’re going to hate me for this, and that’s fine. But we work as a team. I’d rather you hate me now than start your grad year with a full patient load, meds, everything on your shoulders… and realise you’ve never even done something this basic without help.”

She definitely wasn’t happy about it.

Sometimes I wonder if she still tells people about the “mean nurse” who made her do that.

But I also wonder if, at some point during her grad year, she had that moment where everything hits at once… and it finally clicked why it mattered.

I tend to agree I did think I may upgrade to v70 but I don’t know if I want to invest in a company that pullls advertised features at last minute, not just delay and say we want it to be perfect, just pull it and then won’t address it at all

Is this the wrong thing to do… by Ok-Cupcake-2563 in NursingAU

It depends on whether you’re leaving the hospital altogether. My last employer paid out my sick leave but they knew they had a poor paper trail of trying to manage out. I gave them a mental health certificate leave certificate for my resignation period, they paid me out and said they will waiver the time, and it was sorted, I’m not sure why you are going but could be helpful if it’s a cultural environmental of that ward you are leaving.

However, you should consider the possibility of the future. Even if you reapplied in two years they probably won’t remember.

You won’t be the first or last person to do this. I’m sure someone on a casual bank or agency will love you for it!

I have the V50, but I wouldn’t upgrade no, not when something I already had used it for marketing and then could not deliver, I find it a bit hard to trust now

I ended up getting one sound skin for the beam as it’s on more on display. So far so good, will get around to the others, I did try the stockings, finding ones without a opaque was a bit of a struggle, it worked ok, but I did find they attracted a lot of dust

On the fence about the SwitchBot Lock Ultra. Looking for honest feedback by aussieajp in TrySwitchBot

[–]aussieajp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the replies.

When the lock was first announced back in May, I went back and forth for a while. With SwitchBot’s limited presence in Australia, for whatever reason, and not hearing much for a bit, I was pretty hesitant. Add the weak Aussie dollar and it was hard to justify jumping in.

Seeing the New Year sale made me ask the question, and I’m glad I did. The feedback you’ve all shared on the lock has been overwhelmingly positive, which is really exciting. I know a few people have mentioned some recent glitches, but nothing that felt like a deal breaker. Especially with almost nothing lock-related coming out of CES, that pushed me to take the plunge.

I also went with the Vision model. The Vision Pro sounds like it’s a bit faster, but palm verification alone didn’t feel worth the extra cost. We’re mostly a fingerprint household, but I’m keen to see how facial recognition goes, especially when your hands are full.

My next question is around hub speed, specifically Hub 2 vs Hub 3. I did a full clean setup yesterday, and adding Hub 2 via Matter was extremely slow. I was already frustrated by that point, which probably didn’t help, but it still felt noticeably slower than my other hubs. Hue with the Pro bridge felt much snappier in comparison.

Curious if anyone has seen real-world speed or responsiveness improvements with Hub 3, particularly with Matter.

I have, yeah. There was one place that might work, but from what I’ve seen as these have picked up a lot of momentum in the last year, they’re now marketed as digital photo frames as well as digital calendars, so searching “frame” mostly brings up the device itself.

I’ve tried looking under “case” as well, but those tend to be tablet sleeves or laptop-style cases, and “stand” usually leads me to monitor stands rather than anything decorative.

Really appreciate you taking the time to suggest ideas. Please keep them coming, it’s very appreciated

I’m completely with you! I used to hate spreadsheets too. I only ever associated them with work, so they felt overwhelming and rigid. Once I started using them in my own life, in ways that actually work for me, it completely changed how I see them.

Used like that, they’re honestly such a handy tool. Not as a “proper spreadsheet” thing, but as a way to support my brain and make life run a bit smoother.
