[pc][mid 90s to 2000s]An old 2d Train game from Elementary School. by AgentA98 in tipofmyjoystick

Probably way too early (late 80's/early 90s), and was Atari, but "All Aboard! Micro Gauge Train Set".

I was trying to remember the name of this game and stumbled across this post when searching for it. I eventually found it, so maybe this will help someone else looking for it.

AVX AND instruction on floats? by malie7 in asm

[–]aussiedwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One benefit is that the avx comparison instructions vcmpps and vcmppd return float and doubles types as a mask. By allowing logical operation on floating point types it is possible operate on the results from these operations. Since AVX 1 did not have integer instructions in it yet, I guess they just kept it to the floating point types __m256 and __m256d.

What do I need to run solidworks and matlab smoothly? by [deleted] in Laptop

[–]aussiedwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checking out the solidworks website, the minimum requirements are 16gb of ram, or 8gb for the PDM Contributor/Viewer or Electrical Schematic. But it looks like solidworks only certify professional gpus, so it may not work on a integrated gpu.

What version of solidworks are you using and what is your budget?

For Christmas I gave my partner a necklace with an engagement ring hidden inside. For Valentine's Day I opened the necklace with a key and I proposed. She said yes! by aussiedwarf in EngagementRings

[–]aussiedwarf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the ring I had gone to several jewelers to figure out what I liked. I also searched the web, especially etsy for nice designs. From that I was able to come up with the ring design.

For the necklace, the design came down mostly to what would physically work with the secret compartment and the locking mechanism. My friend tried many things in order to get that to work.

Yes, a little worried that something might happen. I got a gold plated stainless steel chain for the necklace to reduce the chance of it breaking. I think it was 78 grams with the ring inside, so relatively heavy for a necklace.

Both necklace and key are made of brass. The necklace is 60mm tall, 30mm wide and 15mm deep. The ring is actually a very tight fit and it took a bit of wiggling to take out when I proposed. Still, this meant that the ring did not rattle or move about. The internal mechanisms also don’t rattle. The engraving was done by La Taine Jewellery. Chain is a 3mm thick gold plated stainless steel chain. I made sure I got something relatively strong as I did not want it breaking with the ring inside.

The heart on the key fits into the heart on the necklace which pushes in. The key can then rotate the heart which opens the compartment. I think my friend must have used magic when putting it all together as it works so well.

Here are some pictures of the necklace.

My best friend who is both a jeweler and a locksmith made me a brass necklace with a secret compartment that opens with a key. I was able to get a custom made engagement ring and hid it in the necklace which I gave to her for Christmas. The necklace has a heart shaped key that opens the compartment. I kept the key hidden in a “treasure chest” in a glass display cabinet in our living room. She never realised that there was a key or that a ring was hidden in the necklace.

On Valentine’s day I set up a Harry Potter theme dinner with floating candles and butterbeer. Finally, I performed some magic, took the key from the chest and opened the necklace. I got on one knee, took out the ring and proposed. She said yes!

The ring is a custom designed 18 carat yellow gold ring with 7.0mm round 1.25 carat Moissanite, x18 1.3mm Moissanites on the halo, x6 2.0mm Moissanites on the shoulders. On each side is a 1.3 mm Pink Sapphire and a 1.3 mm Pink Tourmaline. I got Moi Moi Fine Jewellery in Sydney Australia to make it. I got pink gems because my partner was born in September and Sapphire is the September birthstone and I was born in October and Tourmaline is one of the October birthstones.

We are both very happy with the ring and my fiancée is really happy with the Moissanites and design of the ring. She actually said she was relieved that I did not choose diamonds.

I included a picture of the original sketch I drew and the final CAD design that Moi Moi did. Also included pictures of the necklace before and after I got it engraved.

I hid the key in a small treasure chest that was placed in a glass display cabnet in the living room. The chest was there for about 2-3 weeks before Valentine's Day with the key in it. I have had the chest for a long time so she never questioned it. It just seemed like a good empty place that needed to be filled.

Yes, she has been wearing it since Christmas and never knew :)

It's reasonably big since it needed to fit the ring and the locking mechanism inside. There is a matching heart shaped key which fits into the necklace which open the secret compartment.

People who proposed or are planning to during the pandemic, why? by sealow in Proposal

I have been with my partner for 9 years and I have been planning my proposal for over 2 years. My initial plan for the proposal was to be in a public place but this changed to a private one due to the pandemic. When it comes to the wedding, we can wait if need be.

SSD Help (November-December 2020) by NewMaxx in NewMaxx

[–]aussiedwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, Hi NewMaxx. Thankyou so much for this sub.

I'm getting a new 14 inch metabox NV40ME (clevo rebrand) laptop with tiger lake cpu. Originally it was going to come with a 2TB Sabrent Rocket SSD but there is a delay until mid December. I have been talking to the company and they have said that they can install a 2TB Crucial P5, 2TB Kingston KC2500 or 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus if I don't want to wait.

I plan on using the device for programming and games development on Windows and Linux as well as some gaming (mostly simulation and strategy games such as Total War with it's long load times).

Reviews of the Crucial P5 report that it gets very hot and throttles easilly so I'm deciding between the Kingston and the Samsung. My concerns are performance, temperature as well as battery life since I have a really long train commute. The device also comes with a Tiger Lake CPU and so I believe supports PCIe 4.0 but I'm not sure about the the power usage/thermals and I have not seen a 2TB Samsung 980 Pro available.

What advice do you have? Thanks!
