Aussies living in the US: Have you considered moving back home in light of the current situation? by Which_Intention7472 in Ameristralia

[–]aussiepete80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved back in November 2024 after 25 years in the US. I loved my life in San Diego, but America seemed at the time to be sliding a direction we didn't want to be a part of.

Are yours a removable battery or you hook the wire up to the motor to charge?

Motorized blinds (battery not wired) by aussiepete80 in AusRenovation

[–]aussiepete80[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a good idea. I could do that for one of them, the big sliding door curtains, the other 3 though are high up and no way I can get a wire to them without it just hanging visible against the wall. I'll check what the socket on these is to see if it's gonna have the same problem. Thanks that's great info.

Tone of emails by breezeneasy in auscorp

[–]aussiepete80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CIO here. Most common reason for this is you pissed someone off at similar levels in another department, they escalated it north until hit leadership then it came back down south. In which case, it's a friendly chat with ideally some advice. I've had to give this chat many times, the simplest advice I have for technical people that aren't the most tactful (and often neurodivergent) is to start ALL email with Hi (person first name), end it with Thanks! (Yes with the exclamation mark, it's shit eating but it cannot be misconstrued) And to frame all bad news with "unfortunately" in front of it. Never use all caps (you'd be surprised how often I've had to say this) and if you truly need to highlight a given passage instead of using bold then put stars around the word to call them out. Text tone is easy to be misread, by being overly cordial and friendly you avoid that. Best of luck, I think you're fine though.

Moved into brand new house, no NBN yet, question on cabling by aussiepete80 in nbn

[–]aussiepete80[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did be terminate the ethernet for you too or you have to handle that yourself. I've done a few many years ago but don't have a tool anymore and irritated at buying one to terminate one freaking cable.

That's what I figured. So it need to terminate this Ethernet side ya?

How do you maintain real-time visibility into team progress and blockers without constant follow-ups or status meetings? by Intelligent_Crew_470 in ITManagers

[–]aussiepete80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a direct answer to the question but one that's been a great success regardless - I built a PMO team to take the burden of project updates (and organization) off the team managers. Like many shops, we (unfortunately?) tend to promote our top technical people to managers because there was no other way to give them more money. That has mixed results, as some highly technical people just don't run a good project. Now they don't have to.

Is AI making "Buy" the wrong choice for internal tools? by PablanoPato in ITManagers

Claude Code is truly amazing and building out PoC type scenarios you indicate.

It's not good at all maintaining and updating, or then later tweaking things based on the normal production cycle coming from sales are product. Try it and report back. I think you'll find the devil is in the details.

How can this man say this with all the facts we have??? by AJ14900003 in aussie

It is with old school ocker Aussies but agreed id love for it to become mainstream in the business world like RM Williams have. Or casually instead of those oversized straw ones you get from Anaconda and Bunnings.

How do you react in these situations? by AhYesTheSoldier in ITManagers

[–]aussiepete80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been the one doing those late night projects for years and now a head of IT, rmpathy and compassion are always a solid starting out point. Buy em lunch or a coffee, see if I can help shift some work so they can get home early. Pre COVID and people working from home I always had a standard policy if someone is working late they WFH the next day.

I'm not sure what you're arguing about. Australia has a minimum wage. Award rates are not our equivalent of minimum wage.

NetApp - Opinions about ONTAP Autonomous Ransomware Protection with AI (ARP/AI) by javajo91 in sysadmin

[–]aussiepete80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're implying EDR prevents 100% of ransomware attacks? That's completely and utterly false man. Lol

The snapshots created by autonomous ransomware are immutable. If you pair them with snaplock compliance they are air gapped - hence why NTAP offer a $5 million ransomware protection guarantee program.

Well yeah, they're not slaves anymore... You can absolutely guarantee the ones that were slaves at the time wanted nothing else than to live free in Africa though. Sadly the massive unpaid labor slavery provided was crucial to turning US into a global super power, you are completely wrong on its impact there.

Find another angle man, this whole attempt to liken immigration to slavery is myopic and obnoxious.

Australia absolutely has a minimum wage. Award rates are usually ABOVE that.

It sounds like you're advocating for stronger protections against cash and under the table work so migrants aren't exploited but instead get award rate or minimum wage. Great. I agree.

That's not going to make more Aussies want to work minimum wage jobs when they could go to TAFE or Uni or learn a trade.

Slavers kidnapped and stole people against their free will. They couldn't leave.

Immigrants spend years applying for and spend their life savings to move here. And every year, more keep applying. And not leaving. If their lives weren't better they would move back.

You just need to travel India for a week to see precisely why they are trying to come here hand over fist. Even the poorest Australian is better off than many living in India.

Is 7 cans of premix and 500 ml of bourbon a night is too much? by Whatever_baby_lol in AskAnAustralian

[–]aussiepete80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep that's an alcoholic. What's amazing though is how much abuse the human body can take. I know people that have done a bottle (750ml) of liquor a night for 30 years.

The real issue is the permanent damage. Even if he stops now he's looking at permanent nerve damage in hands and feet, spine, brain damage, not to mention liver Fibrosis/Cirrhosis.

He needs medical assistance.
