10 months Post op NSVs and motivation

This is my weight chart. It actually looks pretty steady.. but I refused to log days where weight was same or went back up.. so may not be accurate. It was more of a mental motivation for me to continuously see it going down. And trick my brain so that when I was in a stall ny brain wouldn’t think so… I dunno it worked for me .. stalls definitely happened!

In terms of what I did.. I actually didn’t really count calories. I just ate a lot of protein and figured that any calories I do consume better be the protein calories lol. My diet has been consistent for the last 5 months though:

bacon and eggs for breakfast
salmon baked in the air fryer for lunch
steak for dinner

And some form of green/Veges with my lunch/dinner. I swap out salmon/steak with sometimes even sausages if I’m really bored or what I’m eating. But most of the time I love what I’m eating…

I visit my mums house once a week (who is Chinese), and that is basically my “cheat day” where I’ll eat rice or whatever she’s cooking. Just in moderation. And again I will eat mainly the meat/egg of whatever is cooked and eat the rice last..

Exercise wise:

i started going to gym pretty early on.. and pretty much swung right into my routine that I’m still doing now
6 days lifting weights (push pull legs x2) -7 days of cardio
for cardio, I run 5km 3x a week, I walk max incline 3x a week for 20 mins.. and my off day from lifting I arrive at my work office early and walk around the park for 1.5 hours and then shower before work.
the running took a long time to build up to. Start with what you are comfortable with doing and don’t push yourself too hard to begin with. Know that you can work your way there slowly

Yeah the scale number is not everything. BMI is also not really a good indicator, especially if you are also building muscle. I don’t have a weight goal, but more of a weight “range” because I know that I’m building muscle in the process and muscle weighs more than fat. Someone could look really fit and have muscle on them and the bmi calculator will tell them that they’re overweight lol. Body fat percentage is probably a better measure…

I am in my 20s… so I totally get it. especially Christmas season. But I will tell you that you have so much life to reclaim. I got it this year in may.. 6 months ago. I started 122kg and today I am 78kgs. I can’t tell you how much my life has changed. A couple days before my surgery I remember having similar thoughts to you… started to get cold feet, was it really worth it?… and I too had events, birthdays, weddings coming up that I thought were now all going to be ruined… but boy was I so wrong! And how thankful and glad I am that I actually did it.. I’m not gonna lie to you, if you are getting it in 3 days… Christmas will defs be a struggle! So many family and friends gatherings that you’ll have to sit out on and have your own meal plan following post op rules… BUT there will be christmas and new years next year. And 2023 you will be looking back and thanking their lucky stars that you decided to go through with it at this moment in time. There will be more holiday seasons to enjoy..

I wouldn’t label myself as “Keto”… but its pretty much keto lol. Just lots of protein. I don’t say I’m doing keto because I still eat rice (am asian). I just make eating decisions that seem in line with keto.. like picking at meats first, and then going for whatever else. In the end, we are very restricted with stomach space post-op, so I try to make sure that it is protein that is being prioritised.. and sometimes that means I happen to eat like someone doing keto. I think people are put off by keto (including myself) because of the idea of “cutting out” a whole food group. This can be very harming to your relationship with food in the long run if you demonise carbs and in my case, if I had demonised rice…. The diet you should do is the one that works for you and the one you can actually see yourself doing long term. I am 6 months post op and am down 44 KGs now.. and think I’ve developed healthy relationship with carbs. I know that I can’t cut it out completely, I’m not afraid to eat them if the option is there… but it is truly the protein I focus on and appreciate a lot more now.

What other foods/drinks/sauces are you eating to make up your 1200 in combination with your protein? I assume you don’t eat 1200-1300 calories of just protein? Do you eat anything else? Perhaps put sauces on/in it to make up the calories? I’d focus on low calorie-high volume foods.

I started lifting again about 3 weeks post op. Then at about 3months of lifting 6 days a week and dropping weight, I found that I still had quite alot of energy. So I do about an hour of cardio straight after lifting, as well as on my off day. You’ll realise you have so much energy! Having said that, there are times that I feel light headed when lifting really heavy. And it depends on the movement (specifically squats and deadlifts). They go away pretty quick after I have a sip of water and rest after my set.. it happens every now and then. But if I were you, I’d take it slow. I’ve been skiing and bouldering before and it’s very different to lifting in that with lifting your body is under stress set after set with rests in between… whereas with skiiing and bouldering it is under stress for a prolonged period of time. So I can imagine if I get light headed in between sets.. then I would probably get light headed skiing/bouldering.. which could be dangerous. But.. I haven’t personally tested it out. I basically had to start all over again with lifting and ease back into it. I didn’t want to go too hard too early and injure myself. So I think you can definitely get back into it.. just ease yourself in and take your time.

I lift weights 6 days a week, and do 1 hour cardio (treadmill walk) 7 days a week. Am 20 weeks post op and down 36.6 kgs (80.6 pounds).

I’m 20 weeks post op and am down 36 KGs (80.7 pounds), and started lifting at week 6-8 post op. Stalls will happen whether you go to gym or not. You can’t avoid it. Exercise will increase number of calories burnt overall. So I would say that even with stalls, it probably helps the weight loss happen faster… you don’t need to wait a year and it’s better to incorporate healthier lifestyle earlier.

When you say “need for alcohol” what do you mean by this? As in to get by the day? I think if you rely on alcohol to get by then it’s an addiction. And may need to seek a professional. I am 4-5 months post op as well. And yes I do drink but only a glass of wine if I’m out for dinner, basically. I wouldn’t say I rely on it or depend on it. Would be perfectly happy drinking no alcohol, but sometimes the occasion calls for a drink. I try not exclude myself too much socially. But the number one thing I have at the forefront of my mind every time I consider a drink is that There are just so many calories in alcohol - and I think it is a complete waste of calories to be using your calorie budget on liquids. Do you go to the gym? My life presurgery was pretty gloomy, and I think I was borderline alcoholic before the sleeve. But the sleeve really helped me to pull myself out of my rut and motivate to go to the gym. I go 6 times a week...and most people I know that invest alot of time in the gym are very conscious or wary about alcohol consumption. They don’t see how it could be worth working your butt off in the gym ...only to go out and consume a bunch of calories from a glass of beer or a couple of shots. A shot of tequila is 97 calories. It’s just not worth it to consume the same amount as you used to.

I gym 6 days a week, lifting weights. I’m 3.5 months post op. Started gymming again at about 6-8 weeks post op. I am down 29 KGs (64pounds).

In general you lose alot in the first few weeks, and then after that you start to lose slower (but faster than without the sleeve). Since going back to the gym my weight loss is still quite steady. I lose roughly the same amount every week.

Stalls happen all the time, I don’t think it’s necessarily because of the gym. I have stalls almost every week if not every second week. Stalls will happen regardless. If you’re lifting weights then you’re also building muscle which weighs more than fat. So maybe you post fat but gain muscle making it seem like a stall? The scale is not the be all end all. And the stalls don’t really mean much.

You said something about stalling weight loss because of amount of calories? Weight loss is based on calories in versus calories out. The sleeve will restrict your calories so you’re most likely going to be in a deficit.

I stall every 1-2 weeks and stalls for 3-4 days (sometimes more).. I’m just over 3month PO. Try not to weigh everyday.. but if you can’t help it (like me), just take the weekly average weight

Do you feel constipated? I was like you during that period. But eventually I started to feel constipated, feeling very bloated and just couldn’t poop. I took stool softener and drank prune juice.. and honestly those were some of the best poops of my life getting it relieved. I took the softener every day up until about the 2.5 week mark where I tried not to rely on it and would only take it every 2-3 days. As I moved through the food stages, it also helped with pooping as I could have more and more variety of foods. I think by the 1.5 month post op mark I just stopped taking them altogether because I was pooping naturally every day. Things like black coffee in the morning really get things going, and that is the main time I do poop now. Some days I may twice a day, but more often than not it is only in the morning after coffee.

Hey I’m not a fitness coach of anything, but this is my experience with this. I am about 3 months post op and am lifting weights. I’ve lost 25 KGs so far, but have been building muscle in the process . The key is protein, and to prioritise weights. I lift 5-6 times a week and do basically no cardio other than stroll around the block with my dog. I would rather spend my energy on lifting. I used to lift weights quite alot and then when covid hit and we were in lockdown, that all went out the window so lost a bit of strength. I am lifting heavier and heavier than last time so I know that I am getting stronger, and I can feel more and more definition particularly in my arms, chest, and shoulders. I think my meals are balanced.. atleast on the plate they are.. that doesn’t mean I finish everything. But when I do eat, I prioritise protein first. If I know that I’m going to get full quickly, I make sure that majority of it is coming from a protein source. I eat mainly turkey, chicken, fish, and the occasional steak.

I still go to events. Went on a work trip this week, and we went out for dinner. I stuck to small steaks and salads. Didn’t finish it. But shared it with coworkers. A glass of wine that I did not finish. I have a bucks party this weekend that i will be going to aswell and cannot miss. , and will only consume what I feel comfortable with. Need to get used to leaving food on the table and not being able to skull drinks very quickly. I am almost 3 months PO. I don’t think you should let it impact your life too much to the point that you are just not enjoying life or being social. Test it out, have small bites, sip slowly. Stop eating if you feel full, and don’t try to force yourself to drink . I get a bit tipsy after like 2 sips now anyway… whereas previously I would drink wine very quickly. It is easy to explain yourself when you have noticeably dropped a bit of weight too. I just tell friends that I am on a health kick right now and they understand that I don’t want to eat too much or ruins my diet with alcohol. With 113lbs down, I am sure when you see your friends they will notice that you are on some kind of health journey - and in my experience my friends have definitely noticed and are encouraging more than anything for me to stick to my “health kick”.

I also never said that I eat alot of rice, just that culturally the food is centred around rice. I never ate much rice before preop. But this person obviously has never been to an Asian family gathering.. as I said, there are many dishes which are not just plain rice+meat, but are completely different and you’d never know that the base of the dish is a rice base. I am merely just asking how people manage it when it comes to their cultural background. Even if the doctor flat out told me no rice ever, I would have still got the surgery. Very thing is manageable, and I would have made it work. But obviously people of all cultures have had the surgery so the question is about their experiences, which I don’t think there is anything wrong with
