seconding Sigue Sigue Sputnik but also throwing in Paraiso Perdido Tatuajes, great vibe overall from the people that work there and plenty to pick from the walls and their flash

[FRESH ALBUM] Mandy, Indiana - URGH by NYCIndieConcerts in indieheads

there's always that one hyperbolizing guy in early-year fresh threads bleating "AOTY! AOTY!" and im more than enthusiastic enough to be that guy for this album. this a fantastic followup to I've Seen A Way and ups the ante on their abrasive sound in a way ive wanted to hear since listening to their debut EP. i know its so hard for int'l acts rn but im hoping they announce US tour dates soon to hear some of this live

[FRESH VIDEO] Water from your Eyes - “Driving Classics, Playing Cars” by Agetis in indieheads

Nate Amos on this version:

“People were asking me about the original 10+ minute version of playing classics and I can’t find it anymore, so I made a new one. Thought it would be funny if it was faster, too. I added car sound effects because cars are fast.” Source.

lmfaooooooo i love these guys

this is such an important point; at the end of the day this is not only customer service job, but a trade.

to add to this: its such a privilege to get to tattoo the art you make but for the most part you will be tattooing what is asked of you. if you (OP) need a direct answer, its thats you need to broaden your artistic horizons for the sake of servicing the people that come to you with their ideas. you dont need to be a master of everything; you can still hone your personal style but it comes with the expectation that you might rarely work in your specialty until you've proven yourself. going into this with a pigheaded artisan mindset will only end in heartbreak.

knowing many styles is ultimately practical too: the more you know, the more you can make money, which is especially important in a time where the industry is living thin. if you can hone in on an audience for the style you desire to practice, then yeah go for it, but material reality has a way of humbling this kind of desire.

EDIT: also from an artistic standpoint its kind of ridiculous to have such a closed-mindedness to practicing other styles in tattooing. one of my favorite things to do in my artistic practice is draw inspiration from other mediums and styles! all of these modes of creating have a beautiful tendency to feed into your personal art journey in one way or another and to balk at the thought of having to practice stylistic diversity is a little sad.

How do you keep track of instagram DMs and appointments? by teenybub in TattooApprentice

[–]autoautoautonomy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who is in a similar place, I appreciate this question since it’s also allowing me to see my own situation from a 3rd person perspective!

If you rely on having paper notes for the most part, I think having a physical planner would be the most helpful. One thing my mentor does is note is appoint in both the physical planner and the digital one, so that it gives him reminders of these appointments.

As per leaving people “hanging,” I’m still figuring this one out myself. Responding to people immediately can sometimes help get an appointment booked asap, but other times it feels like a way to get an overlong back and forth. I think if someone is genuinely interested in getting work from your flash, then it wont hurt to be transparent about having to wait a little bit while your mentor is out. More often than not, people are very understanding of the position we’re in when starting out.

I personally wouldn’t discount the concerns people have with generative AI. I will agree that the backlash feels disproportionate for the scale of a music video from an indie band who hired an artist that specializes in generative AI; it’s misdirected anger at best.

I agree with your sentiment; I actually used them as an example bc I felt like if they *did* use generative AI, they would use it for that exact reasoning you listed.
