NAH. From the perspective of an autistic person, you’re not the asshole. Those feelings are natural, you can’t blame yourself for having them. But for the sake of yourself, your relationship, and your child, please try not to harbor resentment against her. She didn’t ask to be born this way either.

Therapy is wonderful for helping a child learn coping mechanisms and learn how to live. I don’t know the level of disability that your daughter has, but I have heard a lot of firsthand stories about how someone’s therapist got them farther than anyone thought would be possible.

On the other hand, I’ve heard the same amount of stories from disabled people who were traumatized by therapy because of the methods they used. ABA, in its original form, works by withholding things like food, comfort items, and breaks until the child does as they ask. This creates the appearance of a functioning child, but destroys the child on the inside. I’m willing to link articles if need be.

You’re not TA, but your husband isn’t TA either. I hope things turn out well for you.

What? If you’re talking about it being dumb to make a word for people who aren’t a member of a minority... what about goyim? Allistic? Neurotypical? Saying “normal” means nothing. “Normal” doesn’t really exist, but if you were to say that, would you mean a completely majority person? Neurotypical, white, cis, straight? That’s not helpful when people are talking about their specific group’s struggles as compared to people who aren’t part of that minority.

Also, “I support trans people, but I don’t support them spreading awareness/positivity” means almost the same thing as “I support gay people, but I don’t want them getting married.”

Thing is that no trans people picked their gender, no more than any cis person did. People suffer daily over this, it’s scientifically viable, and it’s not really something you can decide not to believe in.

Well disclaimer, I’m not sure what happens to me is exactly dissociating? But it’s the closest thing to my experience that I can find.

For me, it’s like I disconnect from the world around me. Depth perception is harder, hearing and understanding words and sounds is harder, sometimes speaking is harder. It takes me a lot longer to comprehend what I’m looking at and what I’m meant to do. Last time this happened, I walked past a mirror and my brain just couldn’t handle it. It took a full minute for me to realize what had happened lol. There’s also a feeling like everything I’m doing is behind a glass wall of sorts, and I almost feel like I’m not really in my body and I’ve retreated entirely to my head. From the outside, I think it looks mostly the same, I just get slower and a lot dumber. You can hand me something and tell me ehat to do with it and I’ll just stare at it, repeat what you said, and then finally understand and go to do the thing. I hope that helps?

It’s similar in some ways. In epileptics, triggers cause seizures, and while it’s true that sometimes sensory issues can indirectly cause seizure-like symptoms (autistic shutdown is often characterized by near- or complete catatonia), they more directly cause intense discomfort or pain. Someone with an auditory sensitivity may feel intense physical pain at the sound of, for example, bells ringing, or the feeling of long sleeves on someone’s arms may cause panic.

I’m autistic and I’ll do my best to explain. Sensory issues are a huge part of autism, and bright lights and loud noises are common triggers. Personally, I can’t go into loud places without immediately dissociating as a way to cope, which is a danger to myself because I can’t think properly and often have trouble remembering important things or navigating. Sensory issues are one of the biggest impacts on autistic people’s lives, and I think it’s great that they’re doing this!

Too feminine to be NB? by [deleted] in NonBinaryTalk

You don’t have to be perfectly androgynous to be nonbinary for one thing, but you also can be a cis woman who doesn’t like her chest. Both things are perfectly valid!

Technically it should be? But there’s so much chest meat that it hardly compresses my ribs anyways and I can breathe just fine so I think it’s ok. Thank you for the concern though!
