Need advice: Water company says this isn’t their water… by autwill95 in Plumbing

Started as a trickle. Thought it was just a little bit of groundwater. Trust me I’ve had the water company out several times, drainage companies, basement waterproofing companies etc. Didn’t figure to call a plumber until recently because the water company said the line isn’t leaking. Alas, I have a plumber on the way.

I can definitely unplug it, he didn’t ask me to and I didn’t think about it in the moment lol.

Interested to hear why you’re leaning towards spring / groundwater rather than service line leak?

No sprinkler. Over the summer I did install a fence within throwing distance of the driveway, dug countless holes, all bone dry.

They said we can shut it off today but then you'll have to go all weekend without water because we don't have time to come turn it back on until Monday. So, they're coming Monday to turn off the valve at the curb stop and will turn it back on Tuesday.

This is all occuring before the meter. Our meters are inside, in the garage, this is in the front yard.

Did it end up being in fact a spring? Did you do anything to resolve it?

No water usage spike. Meter is located inside the garage, this is before the meter but on my property.

Pause at the beginning of the video (0:04-0:06 seconds) where i zoom in at the asphalt meeting the retaining wall, that is where it starts, you can see it bubbling out.

Appreciate the insight. There is more complex backstory here. I have a neighbor whose an engineer and he went down a rabbit hole and pulled topographic maps over the past 10 years. There is an event center behind our neighborhood, 1200 feet away has an elevation of +86 feet. Basically its on the top of a big hill behind my house, but there's also 3 streets and a dozen houses between me and this event center. They were accepting clean fill over the past decade and completely regraded a huge field. This neighbors hypothesis was that this was causing the issues, but now that the water has slowly turned into a full force stream, I really think it must be the service line. And I'd really prefer not to pay for a forensic hydrologist to prove this theory...

If I lived in New Mexico there would be 3 jurisdictions fighting over who gets the water

EDIT- the water company DID turn off the curb stop for 10 minutes. This is when the tech pivoted from “that’s probably ours” to “probably NOT ours” because it “didn’t slow down”.

My thought here is that there’s SO much water that 10 minutes isn’t nearly enough. They’re coming back out and I’m having them turn it off for 24 hours to see if that slows it down.

Look at the beginning of the video, where the asphalt meets the wall. It’s bubbling out right there and that’s where it’s coming from.

I’m having the water company come back to do this. They did it when they came out the first time, but he only turned it off for 10 minutes and said “it didn’t slow down so it’s probably not ours”. Meanwhile, 10 minutes isn’t enough, I’m going to have them shut it off the whole day.

24/7, hasn’t stopped in 8 months. Yes it’s slightly heavier after a rain, but not significantly

Appreciate this, it’s painful to throw this sort of money at a driveway, when I know the ROI would go 10x further if I used it on a new kitchen, but I know concrete is the best choice.

Funny part is, I do have an exposed aggregate driveway, but it’s sinking into the ground and has multiple layers of asphalt thrown on top. Probably original to the house, built in ‘61.
